In the electrical secondary system of power plants, the generator protection device is the last line of defense to ensure the safe operation of the unit. A fully functional and flexible protection system is crucial in the face of internal faults in the stator winding, abnormal operating conditions in the system, and various grounding faults. The M-3425A generator protection relay is designed for this purpose. Based on microprocessors and digital signal processing technology, it integrates up to 34 protection functions and is suitable for all types of generators, regardless of their type of prime mover, grounding method, or wiring method. This article will delve into the core protection functions, hardware configuration, tuning and debugging methods, and typical application scenarios of the device, providing a practical technical guide for on-site engineers.
Comprehensive protection function system
M-3425A adopts modular functional design, providing two configuration schemes: Base Package and Comprehensive Package. Users can flexibly choose according to the importance and protection requirements of the unit. The basic package already covers the main functions of generator protection, while the comprehensive package adds more comprehensive system backup protection on this basis.
Differential protection is the main protection for internal faults in generators. The 87 function of M-3425A is percentage differential with adjustable slope (1% to 100%), which can effectively protect against phase to phase short circuits. For high impedance grounding systems, the 87GD zero sequence differential function can provide highly sensitive grounding fault protection. The device also has a CT ratio correction function. When the CT ratio of the machine end and the neutral point is different, no auxiliary CT needs to be installed to complete the matching. It should be noted that when the 50DT function is used for split phase lateral differential protection, the 87 and 87GD functions must be disabled.
The demagnetization protection (40) adopts a dual offset circular characteristic, which can detect partial or complete demagnetization of the generator. This function provides two tuning methods, which engineers can choose based on the unit parameters. The voltage control function allows for accelerated tripping when the system voltage drops, while the directional components prevent misoperation under mild under excitation conditions. Positive sequence impedance is used for demagnetization criterion, and all impedance values are converted from the secondary side.
The stator grounding protection scheme is rich. The 59N neutral point overvoltage protection can cover 90% to 95% of grounding faults in the stator winding. For applications requiring 100% protection, the 27TN third harmonic neutral undervoltage protection can detect ground faults near the neutral point and achieve full coverage in conjunction with 59N. The 64S low-frequency injection type 100% stator grounding protection can monitor insulation resistance both online and offline by injecting a 20Hz signal into the neutral point, making it particularly suitable for large units.
The out of step protection (78) consists of a supervisory MHO component and a set of blind spots. When the positive sequence impedance trajectory crosses the blind zone and reaches the opposite blind zone within the set time, the protection action is activated. Optional "MHO exit trip" mode, which exits when the impedance crosses the MHO circle to reduce the breaking stress of the circuit breaker. The extreme slip counter and reset time can be set, with a typical count of once.
In addition, the device also provides complete functions such as overexcitation (24), reverse power/low positive power (32), negative sequence overcurrent (46), stator overload (49), instantaneous overcurrent (50/50N), inverse time overcurrent (51V/51N), overvoltage/undervoltage (59/27), frequency protection (81/81A/81R), circuit breaker failure (50BF), false power on (50/27), and trip circuit monitoring (TC).
Hardware architecture and communication interface
M-3425A adopts a standard 19 inch chassis, which can be installed horizontally or vertically. The front panel can be optionally equipped with M-3931 human-machine interface module and M-3925A target module. The HMI module provides a 2-line 24 character vacuum fluorescent display and six buttons, supporting local settings, status monitoring, and target viewing. The target module provides 24 target LEDs and 8 output LEDs for quick recognition of action functions.
The device provides rich communication interfaces: front panel COM1 is RS-232, rear panel COM2 is RS-232 (when Ethernet port is selected, COM2 cannot be used for communication, but IRIG-B demodulation can still be transmitted through COM2), COM3 is RS-485 two-wire system. The optional Ethernet port supports MODBUS over TCP/IP, BECO2200 over TCP/IP, or IEC 61850 protocols. Through the S-3400 IPScom communication software, engineers can remotely complete fixed value reading and writing, real-time monitoring, waveform recording download, and event record viewing.
The device supports IRIG-B time synchronization and can accept modulated or demodulated signals for precise timing. The internal clock can also be manually set without IRIG-B, but it is recommended to stop the clock during long-term shutdown to extend battery life.

Key points of tuning and configuration
System parameter settings are the foundation of tuning. It is necessary to correctly input the rated voltage (50-140V), rated current (0.5-6A), CT and VT ratio, VT wiring method (line voltage/phase voltage/line voltage to phase voltage), phase sequence (ABC/ACB), etc. It is particularly important to note that when the VT wiring is line ground and the secondary voltage is 69V, the "line ground to line conversion" method should be selected. At this time, the device will automatically calculate the line voltage for voltage sensitive functions.
The fixed value configuration file supports four groups and can be switched through HMI, communication, programmable logic, or control/status input. The protection function will be interrupted for about 1 second during switching, which needs to be considered during system operation. The function of copying activity configuration files can quickly create new fixed value groups and reduce duplicate inputs.
IPSlow provides 6 sets of logic schemes that can be programmed using IPSgom software. The logical input sources include output contacts, function start/trip, control/status inputs, and communication triggers. Logic gates can be selected as AND, OR, NAND, or NOR. The output can be used for export tripping, switching constant value groups, or as input for other functions. Each fixed value group can be configured with 6 sets of logic, and up to 24 logic schemes can be implemented in four fixed value groups.
The circuit breaker monitoring (BM) function estimates the wear of circuit breaker contacts by integrating current (IT) or current squared (I ² T). The cumulative value is calculated separately by phase, and an alarm can be triggered when it exceeds the set threshold. The preset accumulator function allows for continued accumulation from the current wear value after replacing the circuit breaker.
Trip circuit monitoring (TC) determines circuit integrity by monitoring the continuity of the trip coil circuit. When the output contact is disconnected, if a small current flows through the TC input, it indicates that the circuit is intact; If there is still no current in the TC input after the output contact is closed, it indicates that the contact is not closed. It should be noted that the TC input voltage level can be selected through jumper wires (24/48/125/250V dc) and must match the actual tripping coil voltage.
Debugging and testing methods
The device has been precisely calibrated at the factory and generally does not require recalibration after on-site installation. But for the 64F Field Ground function, it is recommended to perform system calibration to compensate for cable capacitance effects when the cable length exceeds 100 feet. Automatic calibration can be initiated through HMI or IPScom, simply enter the reference voltage and current according to the prompts.
Functional testing should be carried out item by item according to the steps in the device manual. Before testing, it is necessary to confirm that all tested functions have been activated, and other functions are temporarily disabled to avoid misoperation. During testing, use a three-phase voltage source and a current source, and connect them according to the testing configuration diagram for each function. The phase angle relationship between voltage and current needs special attention, usually with the lead angle being positive and the lag angle being negative.
The commissioning inspection includes: checking the polarity of CT and VT, checking the phase sequence, confirming that the differential current is close to zero, checking the power direction, and verifying the displayed values of various analog quantities. By examining the waveform of the recorded wave, it is possible to visually determine whether the polarity of CT and VT is correct. If excessive negative or zero sequence components are found, the phase sequence and polarity should be checked.
The self check and diagnostic functions can be entered into diagnostic mode through HMI to test output relays, input contacts LED、 Button, display, and communication ports. Diagnostic mode will temporarily disable all protection functions, so it is strictly prohibited to enter while the protection device is running.
Typical application scenarios
M-3425A is suitable for various types of generator protection. For directly connected generators, 87 differential protection is used as the main protection, and 87GD is used as the grounding backup. For generators connected through a Δ - Y transformer, the device can compensate for a 30 ° phase shift through internal calculations without the need for auxiliary VT. For high impedance grounding systems, the 59N+27TN combination provides 100% stator grounding protection. For low impedance grounding systems, 87GD provides high sensitivity grounding differential protection. For pumped storage units, the forward/reverse power lockout function of 27TN can prevent misoperation during the start-up process.
The device also supports split phase transverse differential protection configuration, which is achieved through the 50DT function. At this time, the CT is connected in a split phase manner. When there is a risk of inter turn short circuit in the generator, the 59X multifunctional overvoltage function can provide inter turn fault protection, but it should be noted that the 25 synchronous check function is not available at this time.
