In the field of industrial automation, the built-in Panel PC highly integrates display, touch, and computing cores, making it an ideal choice for the human-machine interface of control cabinets. The Beckhoff CP6700 series is equipped with Intel processors, DDR4 memory, CFast storage, and rich interfaces, making it particularly suitable for machines and system engineering that require compact layout and reliable operation. This article is based on official technical documentation and presents a comprehensive practical manual covering model identification, mechanical installation, electrical connections, PC-ON intelligent start stop, 1-second UPS data protection, CFast replacement, and TwinCAT version adaptation.
Model Identification and Core Configuration Quick Check
The complete order number for CP6700, such as CP6700-0001-0050 or CP6700-0001-0060, where the last four digits represent device generation and hardware configuration:
-0050: Equipped with Intel ® I210 Ethernet controller, 4xUSB 2.0, fTPM 2.0 not enabled, minimum TwinCAT version is 2.11 build 2254 or 3.1 build 4020.0.
-0060: Equipped with Intel ® The i210 controller provides 2 x USB 3.0 (X107, X108) and 2 x USB 2.0 (X105, X106), with fTPM 2.0 enabled. The minimum TwinCAT version required is 3.1 build 4024.7.
Both support dual Gigabit LAN (100/1000Base-T), suitable for EtherCAT real-time communication (cycle time ≤ 1ms, supports distributed clock). If you order the stainless steel front panel option (model CP6700-1400), the protection level of the front panel has been raised from standard IP54 to IP65, suitable for environments that require frequent cleaning such as food and pharmaceuticals. However, please note that button extensions (C9900-G072/G073) cannot be added under this option.
Mechanical installation: hole size and clamping lever fixation
CP6700 adopts a pull-out clamping lever design similar to CP29xx, which can be quickly fixed to the control cabinet door without the need for additional screws. Before installation, it is necessary to obtain the corresponding dimensional drawings (specific values are omitted in this article, please refer to the official download center).
Key installation points:
Openings and wall thickness: The wall thickness of the control cabinet should be between 1mm and 5mm to ensure sufficient clamping force of the lever.
Ventilation gap: Leave at least 5cm of space above and below the equipment to ensure natural convection and heat dissipation, with an upper limit of 55 ° C ambient temperature.
Installation steps:
Insert the panel into the opening from the outside and stabilize it.
Rotate the four clamping levers on the rear side outward by 90 degrees.
Use a 2.5mm hex wrench to tighten the screws on the lever in sequence until the panel is tightly attached to the cabinet door.
If the optional button extension is selected, its external dimensions will change, and the corresponding hole diagram (see Fig.13 in the document) needs to be used.

Electrical connection and grounding specifications
1. Power interface (X101)
CP6700 adopts a 2 × 2-pin voltage socket, with pin definitions as follows:
Pin 4:24V positive pole
Pin 3:GND(0V)
Pin 1: PC-ON (input, used for remote control of start stop)
Pin 2: P-S (Power Status output, indicating shutdown completion)
Power supply requirements: 22-30V DC, must comply with NEC Class 2 or PELV specifications, external fuse rating ≤ 4A (UL 248). The recommended cross-sectional area for the cable is 1.5mm ² to ensure that the voltage at the device end is not less than 22V. The randomly included plug has an order number of C9900-P943 and can be purchased separately.
2. Grounding (PE&FE)
There is a protective conductor connection point (PE) on the back of the equipment, which must be connected to the grounding busbar of the control cabinet using a wire of ≥ 4mm ². This connection serves both as a protective grounding (to prevent electric shock) and a functional grounding (to meet EMC immunity EN 61000-6-2 and emission EN 61000-6-4). Neglecting grounding can lead to touch drift, communication abnormalities, and even hardware damage.
3. PC-ON intelligent start stop mechanism (advanced function)
CP6700 provides a unique PC-ON input that can be used in conjunction with the machine's main switch to achieve elegant shutdown of the operating system:
Startup: When the PC-ON pin is 0V, the system automatically boots the operating system upon power up.
Normal shutdown: Switch the PC-ON pin to 24V, and the operating system will begin the shutdown process. After the shutdown is completed, the P-S output drops from 24V to 0V, indicating that the main power can be safely cut off.
Important: If PC-ON is restored to 0V in advance during the shutdown process, the system will restart. Therefore, external logic needs to be designed to ensure that the P-S becomes 0V before cutting off the main contactor.
This function allows the main switch to be normally closed and only controls the PC start and stop through the PC-ON signal, avoiding file system damage caused by directly cutting off 24V. The P-S output has a maximum load of 0.5A and can drive intermediate relays.
Signal interface configuration
1. Dual Gigabit Ethernet (X103, X104)
RJ45 interface supports 100/1000Mbps adaptive, with a maximum line length of 100m. LED indication:
Green light constantly on: link established; Green light flashing: data transmission and reception.
Orange light (100M) or green light (1000M): indicates the current speed.
The i210 controller has good real-time optimization for EtherCAT and is suitable as a master or slave interface for motion control.
2. USB interface (X105-X108)
-0050:4 USB 2.0, maximum 500mA per channel, electronic protection.
-0060: X107 and X108 are USB 3.0 (blue), X105 and X106 are USB 2.0.
3. DVI interface (X109)
Only transmitting digital signals, can be connected to a second DVI monitor for dual screen expansion.
Status indicator light and 1-second UPS
1. Tri color status LED (FB, HDD, PWR)
FB (Field Bus):
Red constantly on: TwinCAT Stop
Blue constantly on: TwinCAT Config
Green constantly on: TwinCAT Run
Red/blue or red/green flashing: corresponding status accompanied by fieldbus error.
HDD (red): Always on indicates that the storage medium is being accessed.
PWR (green): Constant light indicates that the PC has been powered on.
2. Capacitive 1-second UPS (option C9900-U214)
When the external 24V drops, the built-in supercapacitor can maintain power supply to the processor for several seconds, enough for TwinCAT to save up to 1MB of persistent data to the storage medium. This feature needs to be controlled through the function block FB_S-UPS_SAPI and only supports Windows Embedded Compact 7/Standard 7 or Windows 10 IoT Enterprise. Attention: This UPS is only used to store critical data and cannot be used as an uninterruptible power supply.

Debugging and Beckhoff Device Manager Security Configuration
When powered on for the first time, the pre installed operating system automatically starts, and the Beckhoff Device Manager will pop up the Security Wizard, forcing the modification of the default password (factory username: Administrator, password: 1). Be sure to set a strong password (at least 10 characters, including uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters) and change it regularly. Device Manager supports remote configuration through local browser access to localhost/config, including network, storage, peripherals, etc.
If the device is not pre installed with an operating system, you need to install and load the corresponding drivers (Intel chipset, network card, USB, etc.) by yourself.
Maintenance and replacement of vulnerable parts
1. Cleaning standards
