Common problems and solutions for wiring:
TPL CN connection: The TP-485 board behind each Tower is responsible for the network interface. Cross connect the BUS A and BUS B of Tower # 1 and Tower # 2 through twisted pair cables. The standard cable length is 5 feet. If using a 10 meter option cable, ensure that the cabinet spacing is within 10 meters.
UCN (Universal Control Network) connection: UCN is used to connect on-site control devices such as APM (Advanced Process Manager). UCN's A/B coaxial cables must be strictly distinguished and cross connections are prohibited. Two UCN Taps must be installed within 5 cable meters (15 feet) of the connector and ensure that the grounding wire is connected to the UCN GND screw on the panel.
EMC Directive Compliance: If the system requires CE certification, all cables entering and exiting the cabinet must be shielded, and the shielding layer must be connected to the rack chassis at both ends of the cable through a metal connector shell (Backshell) 360 degrees. Ordinary plastic shell connectors cannot meet EMC requirements.
Startup strategy for storage media and history module (HM)
The system software, database, and configuration data are mainly stored on the hard drive of the History Module (HM) and the 150MB Bernoulli tape drive of the US node. The physical maintenance of a tape drive is directly related to whether the system can be successfully reloaded.
Operating specifications for magnetic tape drives:
Insertion and extraction: The tape can only be inserted when the tape drive is powered on, and it must have a stop button with one end of the shutter facing the front of the drive. Do not forcefully push in when inserting. When the green LED flashes to constant light and the yellow LED flashes briefly, it indicates that the driver is READY. Before unplugging the magnetic tape, the stop button must be pressed and wait for the green LED to turn off and the motor to completely stop, otherwise it is highly likely to damage the magnetic head or tape.
Write Protect: In order to prevent system files from being accidentally overwritten, the write protect switch below the tape must be turned to the "Write Protect" position. It is strictly prohibited to turn the switch when unplugging the magnetic tape.
Bootload process:
When there is a power outage or HM malfunction on site causing the system to shut down, engineers need to perform overload:
Ensure that Tower # 2 (left side) is powered on and the HM node (usually Node 6) automatically runs (Autoboot). Wait for about 5 minutes until the HM status is normal.
Restart Tower # 1 and wait for the ">" prompt to appear in the upper left corner of the screen.
Press LOAD on the operator keyboard, enter N, and then enter UNP (universal type) or OPR (operator type). The system will read the Network Configuration File (NCF), Area Database, and Button File from HM or tape drive.
If HM cannot load automatically, insert the&C2 tape containing the system boot files into drive 1 of Tower # 1 and load the operator's personality step by step according to the prompts.
After loading is complete, the system will enter the Console Status interface. Engineers need to enter the Time/Date setting (TIME/DATE) through the System Status interface and check if the status of all modules (AM, NIM, HM) is "OK". If NIM is not ready, the NIM loading process needs to be manually executed.
Peripheral devices and environmental maintenance
In addition to the core electronic module, the external devices and cabinet environment of the operating station (US) also affect the stability of the system.
Air filters: Scotfoam air filters are installed at the top of each tower (directly above the Multinode Module). In harsh industrial environments, filters may quickly become clogged with dust, leading to high temperatures inside the cabinet. It is recommended to check every 30 days in heavily polluted environments, and this can be extended to 6 months in ordinary office environments. When cleaning, it is necessary to remove the drive support bracket (with hexagonal screws), take out the filter and wash it by hand with neutral detergent. It must be thoroughly dried before being reinstalled. Damaged or aged filters should be replaced immediately (spare part number 51201201-600).
21 inch monitor adjustment: The system supports various 21 inch CRT monitors such as IDEK and Hitachi. These displays are equipped with complex geometric adjustment functions such as pillow correction (PCC), raster rotation (RRC), vertical/horizontal position and size, etc. For the IDEK MF-8221 model, the control buttons are hidden in the sliding tray below the screen. If there is color cast on the screen, you should first press the DEGAUSS button. Due to the large weight of CRT itself, demagnetization and grating rotation correction should be carried out again after moving the cabinet.
Spare parts management and ORU level replacement
In order to improve fault response speed, factories should retain a certain number of critical spare parts. The system manual clearly lists the list of ORUs (Optimal Replaced Units), including but not limited to:
