ABB SPA-ZC22 Bus connection module

Features
The SPACOM devices, e.g. the relays and the annunciator units are connected to the fibre
optical SPA bus by means of bus connection modules.
The bus connection module SPA ZC22 converts the optical signals of the SPA bus
to RS 485, SPA (+5 V) or RS 232 signals and vice versa.
The bus connection module is provided with a built-in power unit allowing the SPACOM device to be disconnected from the bus connection module, for instance, for service without interrupting the data communication over the optical loop.
The bus connection module is provided with one 9-pin D type subminiature connector for RS 485 or SPA connections, one 25-pin D type connector for RS 232 connections and, according to order,  two or five opto-connector couples for fibre-optical cables.
The fibre-optical links can be based on glass fibre cables, plastic core cables or both types mixed.
The bus connection module is mounted in a suitable place in the apparatus cabinet and the connection cable of the module is plugged to the D-type connector on the rear panel of the
SPACOM device.
The bus connection module type SPA-ZC22 connects to any SPACOM device provided with a D-type connector.
The bus connection module can also be connected to the master units, such as substation level units
SACO 148D4 and SRIO 1000M,  of the com munication system.

The SPA-ZC22 bus connection module plays a key role in power distribution and related communication systems. As an interface unit between SPACOM devices and fiber optic SPA buses, it realizes the conversion of different signal types, ensuring stable and efficient data communication.

Functional characteristics

Signal conversion function: This module can convert the optical signal of SPA bus into RS 485, SPA (+5V) or RS 232 signal, and vice versa. This flexible signal conversion capability enables it to adapt to devices with various interface standards, greatly expanding the compatibility of the system. For example, in a complex power monitoring system that uses both RS 485 communication protocol devices and relies on optical signal transmission data, SPA-ZC22 can easily achieve interconnection and intercommunication between different devices.

Built in power unit: The built-in power unit equipped with the module plays an important role. When performing maintenance and other operations on SPACOM devices, the SPACOM device can be disconnected from the bus connection module without interrupting data communication through the fiber optic circuit. Taking substation equipment maintenance as an example, technicians do not need to worry about the data transmission of the entire system being affected by equipment disconnection when maintaining SPACOM equipment, ensuring the continuity of data such as power system operation status monitoring.

Rich interface configuration: SPA-ZC22 is equipped with a 9-pin D-type micro connector for RS 485 or SPA connection, which facilitates quick connection with corresponding interface devices; There is also a 25 pin D-type connector available for ordering, which meets the needs of specific scenarios for more interfaces or different interface specifications. In addition, it also has two or five fiber optic connector sets for optical cables, and the fiber optic link can be based on glass fiber cables, plastic core cables, or a combination of both types, providing diverse choices for different environments and transmission requirements.


Technical parameters

Electrical parameters: The overload current is 5.6mA and the power supply is rated at 26V. These parameters ensure that the module operates in a stable electrical environment and can maintain basic performance even under certain overload conditions, ensuring that data communication is not affected by excessive current surges.

Communication related parameters: The signal conversion rate can match the communication rate requirements of SPA bus, RS 485, RS 232 and other interfaces, ensuring the timeliness and accuracy of data conversion in different signal forms, and reducing data delay and packet loss. For example, in high-speed data transmission power monitoring applications, optical signals can be quickly and accurately converted into corresponding electrical signals for transmission.


Application scenarios

Substation field: The secondary equipment of the substation can be connected to the optical fiber SPA bus to achieve data exchange and collaborative work between different devices in the substation. For example, by connecting the main units such as SACO 148D4 and SRIO 1000M at the substation level, an efficient substation communication network can be constructed to transmit real-time power parameter monitoring data, equipment status information, etc., providing a data foundation for the stable operation and intelligent control of the substation.

Industrial automation system: In industrial production, it cooperates with various industrial control related equipment, such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs), distributed control systems (DCS), etc., to achieve centralized monitoring and management of industrial equipment. Integrating devices with different communication protocols into the same network through SPA-ZC22 facilitates data collection and analysis during the production process, improving the automation level and efficiency of industrial production.


Diagnosis and working mode

Diagnostic function: The module is equipped with diagnostic LED indicator lights. The "power aux" indicator light is on, indicating that the auxiliary voltage is supplied by an external power source and the power unit is working properly; If the "power int" indicator light is on, it indicates that the auxiliary voltage is provided by the host device and the power supply unit is running well; The LED marked as "sc" will flash according to the data communication rate. By observing the flashing of this indicator light, the data communication status can be intuitively understood, making it convenient to quickly troubleshoot communication faults.

Working mode:

Master device mode: This mode is used when the bus connection module is connected to a device in the system that serves as the master device. In this mode, the module can actively initiate data requests, control signal transmission and other operations, and coordinate data interaction among slave devices within the system.

Slave device mode: If the bus connection module is connected to a device in the system that acts as a slave device, the slave device mode is used. At this point, the module responds to the instructions of the main device and performs data transmission and operation execution according to the requirements of the main device.
