Introduction: The "Core Advantages" of Beckhoff Industrial PC

In the field of PC based automation, Beckhoff is not only the pioneer of TwinCAT software, but also a pioneer in industrial hardware design. Since 1986, Beckhoff has independently developed and produced industrial PCs, and its C66xx series control cabinet PCs are designed specifically for applications that require high computing performance, high data integrity, and flexible scalability. Among them, C6650-0060, as one of the flagship models of this series, integrates the latest Intel processors (8th/9th generation Core i7 with up to 8 cores), ATX large board architecture, redundant disk arrays, and industrial grade stainless steel chassis, making it an ideal choice for high load scenarios such as machine vision, multi axis motion control, and database servers. Mechanical design and installation specifications

2.1 Stainless steel chassis and IP20 protection

C6650-0060 adopts a stainless steel chassis (basic type) with excellent corrosion resistance and structural strength, suitable for long-term deployment in industrial control cabinets. The protection level is IP20, which means it can prevent solid foreign objects with a diameter greater than 12.5mm (such as fingers) from entering, but it is not waterproof, so it must be installed in a dry, non condensing control cabinet. Its external dimensions are 410mm (width) x 360mm (height) x 201mm (depth), with a weight of approximately 12kg. All connection interfaces (power, network, USB, display, etc.) are arranged facing upwards, which allows cables to be directly introduced into the cable tray, avoiding the occupation of adjacent equipment space by lateral outgoing lines, and facilitating smooth airflow inside the cabinet - the side wall of the chassis is completely passive in heat dissipation, allowing equipment to be installed closely to other components inside the cabinet, greatly improving the space utilization of the control cabinet.

2.2 Heat dissipation and operating temperature

The working environment temperature range of the equipment is 0-55 ℃, and the storage temperature is wider. Its passive heat dissipation design relies on natural convection on the metal surface of the chassis, without the need for additional fans (unless installed by the user). However, it should be noted that if a high-performance CPU (such as Core i7-9700E, TDP of about 65W) is selected, it is necessary to ensure that the overall heat dissipation inside the control cabinet meets the requirements. If necessary, a fan inside the cabinet can be installed to promote air flow.


Core hardware architecture: ATX motherboard and processor

3.1 Motherboard and CPU Options

The C6650-0060 is equipped with a standard ATX motherboard and supports Intel 8th generation (Coffee Lake) and 9th generation processors, including Celeron G4900 (2-core 3.1GHz), Pentium, and Core i3/i5/i7 series. The highest optional Core i7-9700E (8-core 2.6GHz) has a TwinCAT 3 performance level of 80, which can easily handle large PLC programs, NC axis control (up to 256 axes), and complex visual algorithms. The motherboard provides 4 DDR4 DIMM slots, with a basic configuration of 4GB and a maximum expandable memory of 128GB, meeting the needs of big data caching and virtualization.

3.2 Onboard Interface and Graphics Capability

No need to occupy expansion slots, the motherboard has integrated:

Dual Gigabit Ethernet (100/1000BASE-T): can be used for EtherCAT real-time communication and IT network isolation.

Integrated graphics card (in processor): Supports high-resolution display, suitable for HMI or visualization applications.

USB、 Serial ports, audio, and other standard I/O are all arranged facing upwards for easy wiring.

Storage and Data Security: RAID 1 and Hot Plug

4.1 Dual hard drive extraction rack and RAID 1 mirroring

The most prominent design of the C6650 series is its two front hard drive extraction racks, which support 3.5-inch SATA hard drives or SSDs (via conversion racks). In conjunction with the onboard RAID controller, it can be configured for RAID 1 (mirror) mode at the factory, where two hard drives store identical data in real-time. Once a physical failure occurs on a certain hard drive, the system can still start and run normally from another hard drive, with zero data loss, ensuring the continuity of critical tasks such as databases, recipe storage, and logging.

4.2 Hot swappable replacement process

The hard drive extraction rack supports hot swap, which means that a faulty hard drive can be replaced without turning off the PC power (provided that RAID 1 is in degraded mode). Operation steps:

Identify faulty hard drives through RAID management tools such as Intel Rapid Storage Technology.

Press the unlock button on the extraction rack where the faulty hard drive is located and pull out the rack.
