SUMITOMO ELECTRIC AC5000S Heat Resistant Alloy Turning Guide

In the fields of aerospace, automotive parts, industrial machinery, and energy equipment manufacturing, turning difficult to machine materials such as high-temperature alloys, heat-resistant stainless steel, and high hardness steel has always been a severe challenge faced by process engineers. These materials often have extremely high temperature strength, low thermal conductivity, and severe work hardening tendency, which leads to tool wear, crescent wear, boundary defects, chipping, and even plastic deformation during cutting. Faced with these processing difficulties in the "search for solutions" stage, the AC5000S series coated hard alloy material provides a systematic technological breakthrough solution. This series includes three grades: AC5005S, AC5015S, and AC5025S, which are respectively designed for high-speed and efficient machining, universal preferred recommendation, and heavy intermittent cutting conditions. Through the collaborative innovation of PVD coating technology and substrate materials, it provides a complete tool solution for turning heat-resistant alloys and rare materials from precision machining to rough machining.

Core technological breakthrough: Absotech PVD coating and dual substrate innovation

To understand why the AC5000S series stands out in difficult to machine material turning, it is necessary to deeply analyze its coating architecture and substrate technology. Traditional CVD coatings often cause chipping during the processing of high-temperature alloys due to their high brittleness and insufficient resistance to thermal cracking; However, conventional PVD coatings are prone to rapid wear of the back cutting surface at high temperatures and speeds. The AC5000S series adopts the new PVD coating technology Absotech, with the core being an AlTiSiN based multilayer thin film structure. This structure has excellent heat resistance, resistance to crescent wear, and resistance to rear blade wear. In the testing of high-speed cutting Inconel 718 (44HRC), the wear of the back cutting surface of AC5005S was only half of that of conventional S05 PVD competitors at 12 minutes, demonstrating a 2-fold wear resistance advantage.

In addition to breakthroughs in coating technology, the AC5000S series has also developed two innovative hard alloy substrates for different processing conditions. The first type is a newly developed tough hard alloy matrix, which introduces innovative sintering processes to significantly improve toughness while maintaining matrix hardness, and has excellent boundary resistance, thereby significantly enhancing the anti chipping performance. This type of substrate is particularly suitable for heavy intermittent cutting and rough machining conditions. The second type is a newly developed heat-resistant hard alloy matrix, which has extremely high high-temperature hardness and strength, and can achieve excellent wear resistance and plastic deformation resistance. In the high-temperature deformation assessment, the deformation of AC5005S was reduced by 50% compared to conventional methods. This means that in the high-temperature environment generated by high-speed cutting, the cutting edge of the tool can maintain a more stable geometric shape, thereby ensuring machining dimensional accuracy and surface quality.

Three major brand positioning and troubleshooting selection strategies

The AC5000S series is not a single brand, but consists of three members with clear positioning, and engineers can accurately match according to specific processing conditions and fault phenomena.

AC5005S: The first choice for high-speed and efficient processing

AC5005S is positioned as an efficient processing grade with 1.5 times the wear resistance of conventional grades. Its application range covers continuous cutting to light intermittent cutting, especially suitable for precision machining conditions that pursue high cutting speed and long tool life. When there are problems such as rapid wear of the back cutting surface, severe crescent wear, or high-temperature plastic deformation during processing, AC5005S is the preferred solution. In the turning of Inconel 718 aviation parts, CNMG644EEG-AC5005S cutting tool was used with cutting parameters of vc=180 SFM, f=0.0118 IPR, ap=. 1181 ", achieving twice the tool life of competitor C. In the processing of Ni based heat-resistant alloy industrial machine parts, TNMG332-EEF-AC5005S cutting tools were used. Under the conditions of vc=100 SFM, f=. 0051 IPR, ap=. 0315 ", the tool life reached 5 times that of conventional products.

AC5015S: Preferred Recommendation for General Processing

AC5015S is positioned as the preferred recommended grade, which also has 1.5 times the wear resistance and anti chipping performance of conventional grades. Its application range covers continuous cutting, light intermittent cutting to medium intermittent cutting, and is a universal choice for processing difficult to machine materials. When encountering mixed faults with both wear and slight blade breakage during processing, AC5015S can provide the best balance. In the turning of Inconel 718 aviation parts, the SNMG432EEG-AC5015S tool was used with cutting parameters of vc=165 SFM, f=. 0059 IPR, ap=. 0787 ", achieving twice the tool life of competitor B. In the machining of Inconel 625 aviation parts, using CNMG423EGU-AC5015S cutting tools, under the conditions of vc=165 SFM, f=0.0118 IPR, ap=0.0197 ", the tool life reaches 1.6 times that of competitor C. In the machining of Inconel 713C automotive parts, the CNMG432EEX-AC5015S tool was used to achieve double tool life under the conditions of vc=330 SFM, f=0.0047 IPR, ap=0.0118 ".

AC5025S: A Powerful Tool for Heavy Intermittent Cutting

AC5025S is positioned as a heavy-duty intermittent cutting grade, with 1.5 times the anti chipping performance of conventional grades. Its application scope covers heavy intermittent cutting and unstable working conditions, especially suitable for rough machining and processing under strong impact loads. When cutting edge breakage, boundary defects, or severe crescent wear occur during processing, AC5025S is the preferred solution. In the turning of Hastelloy aviation parts, CNMG433EMU-AC5025S cutting tool was used with cutting parameters of vc=330 SFM, f=0.0118 IPR, ap=. 1181 ", resulting in a 4-fold increase in tool life. In the machining of iron-based heat-resistant alloy valve parts, WNMG432EEM-AC5025S cutting tool was used to achieve stable double tool life under the conditions of vc=300 SFM, f=. 0059 IPR, ap=. 0591 ". In the processing of high hardness steel industrial machine parts (49HRC), the CNMG433EMU-AC5025S tool can achieve the same tool life even at 1.4 times the cutting speed under dry cutting conditions of vc=1150 SFM, f=0.0063 IPR, ap=0.0591 ".

Chip groove selection and recommended cutting parameters

The AC5000S series offers a wide range of chip breaker options, allowing engineers to accurately match according to machining conditions. For precision machining conditions, EEF chip breakers are the preferred choice, suitable for small cutting depths and small feed rates, and can achieve excellent surface quality. In the precision machining of heat-resistant alloys, it is recommended to use AC5005S/AC5015S/AC5025S with EEF groove type, with a cutting depth range of 0.005-0.020 inches, a feed rate of 0.004-0.005 IPR, and a cutting speed of 160-230 SFM. For light cutting conditions, EEX chip breakers are suitable for medium cutting depths and feed rates, with a recommended cutting depth of 0.020-0.040 inches, feed rate of 0.004-0.008 IPR, and cutting speed of 130-195 SFM. For medium cutting conditions, EEG chip breakers are suitable for medium cutting depths and feed rates, with a recommended cutting depth of 0.020-0.080 inches, feed rate of 0.006-0.010 IPR, and cutting speed of 130-195 SFM. For rough machining conditions, EEM chip breakers are suitable for large cutting depths and feed rates, with a recommended cutting depth of 0.040-0.080 inches, feed rate of 0.008-0.010 IPR, and cutting speed of 95-180 SFM.

In addition, the AC5000S series also offers groove types such as ESU, EUP, EGU, EMU, ENZ, MEF, MESL, MESI, covering a full range of applications from precision machining to rough machining. ESU groove type is suitable for precision machining, EUP is suitable for light to medium cutting, EGU is suitable for medium cutting, EMU is suitable for medium to rough machining, and ENZ is suitable for precision machining to light cutting. In terms of blade shape, we provide negative angle blades such as CNMG, DNMG, SNMG, TNMG, VNMG, WNMG, as well as positive angle blades such as CCMT, DCMT, TCMT, VCMT, VBMT, WBGT, etc., to meet the machining needs of different part profiles.

Practical Case Verification: Cross industry Processing Performance Comparison

To verify the performance of the AC5000S series in actual production, we conducted in-depth analysis by combining real processing cases from multiple industries. These cases cover multiple high-end manufacturing fields such as aerospace, automotive, and industrial machinery, fully demonstrating their outstanding performance under different working conditions.

1. Inconel 718 aviation parts turning

In the turning of Inconel 718 aviation parts, CNMG432EUP-AC5005S cutting tool was used with cutting parameters of vc=150 SFM, f=0.0059 IPR, ap=. 1259 ", achieving good wear suppression and extended tool life. Compared with competitor D (S05 PVD), the cutting edge of AC5005S remains intact after processing, while competitor D exhibits obvious boundary defects and chipping. For applications such as aviation parts that require high safety and reliability, the stability of AC5005S can ensure consistent processing quality.

2. Turning of high hardness steel industrial machine parts (50-55HRC)

When processing high hardness steel industrial machine parts with a hardness of 50-55HRC, the SNMG433EGU-AC5005S tool was used with cutting parameters of vc=170 SFM, f=0.0105 IPR, ap=0.0551 ", achieving good wear resistance, shortening processing time by 13%, and extending tool life. Compared with its competitor E (S05 PVD), AC5005S has less wear on the cutting surface and more complete cutting edges after machining. For difficult to machine materials such as high hardness steel, the heat-resistant matrix of AC5005S can effectively resist high-temperature plastic deformation and ensure machining dimensional accuracy.

3. Turning of 15-5 PH stainless steel aviation parts

In the turning of 15-5 PH stainless steel aviation parts, CNMG433EME-AC5005S cutting tool was used with cutting parameters of vc=180 SFM, f=. 0142 IPR, ap=. 0984 ", achieving a 66% reduction in machining time and a 1.5 times increase in tool life. Compared with competitor G (S05 PVD), AC5005S remained stable after processing 3 pieces, while competitor G only experienced wear after processing 2 pieces. For precipitation hardening stainless steel such as 15-5 PH stainless steel, the high temperature strength and wear resistance of AC5005S can effectively cope with the work hardening tendency.

4. Turning of high hardness steel automotive parts (47HRC)

In the turning of high hardness steel automotive parts (47HRC), DCGT21.50.5TESI-AC5015S tool was used with cutting parameters of vc=230 SFM, f=0.0012 IPR, ap=0.0315 ", achieving twice the tool life of conventional products. The MESI chip breaker exhibits excellent chip breaking ability at small cutting depths and low feed rates, with good chip control and no entanglement phenomenon. For large-scale production of automotive parts, the stability and long lifespan of AC5015S can significantly reduce the frequency of tool changes and improve production efficiency.

5. Turning of heat-resistant stainless steel automotive parts

In the turning of heat-resistant stainless steel automotive parts, CNMG432EEG-AC5025S cutting tool was used with cutting parameters of vc=260 SFM, f=0.0118 IPR, ap=. 0787 ", achieving stable double tool life. The EEG chip breaker exhibits excellent chip breaking ability at moderate cutting depth and feed rate, with good chip control. For difficult to process materials such as heat-resistant stainless steel, the strong and tough matrix of AC5025S can effectively suppress blade breakage and ensure the stability of the processing process.

Common processing faults and solutions

In the turning of heat-resistant alloys and difficult to machine materials, common fault phenomena include wear on the back cutting surface, crescent wear, boundary defects, chipping, and plastic deformation. The AC5000S series provides clear solutions for these faults.

Fault 1: Rapid wear of the rear blade surface

Reason: High cutting speed or insufficient wear resistance of the coating.

Countermeasure: Choose the AC5005S brand, whose Absotech PVD coating has excellent resistance to back cutting wear; Simultaneously reduce cutting speed or increase feed rate to avoid excessive wear of cutting edges at high temperatures.

Fault 2: Severe wear and tear on the crescent shaped depression

Reason: Excessive cutting temperature leads to diffusion wear.

Countermeasure: Choose the AC5005S grade, whose AlTiSiN based multilayer film structure has excellent resistance to crescent wear; Simultaneously using coolant or reducing cutting speed to minimize heat accumulation in the cutting area.

Fault 3: Boundary Defect

Reason: The work hardening layer causes stress concentration at the cutting edge boundary.

Countermeasure: Choose AC5025S grade, whose newly developed strong and tough hard alloy matrix has excellent boundary resistance; At the same time, increase the feed rate appropriately to avoid repeated friction of the cutting edge on the hardened layer.

Fault 4: Broken blade

Reason: Excessive intermittent cutting impact load or insufficient matrix toughness.

Countermeasure: Choose AC5025S grade, whose strong and tough matrix can effectively absorb impact energy; Simultaneously reduce the feed rate or use a smaller lead angle to minimize cutting force impact.

Fault 5: Plastic deformation

Reason: Plastic flow occurs at the cutting edge under high temperature.

Countermeasure: Choose AC5005S grade, whose heat-resistant hard alloy matrix has extremely high high-temperature hardness and strength, reducing high-temperature deformation by 50%; Simultaneously reduce cutting speed and decrease cutting zone temperature.
