In the fields of automotive parts, heavy machinery, and general machinery manufacturing, turning of cast iron materials has always been a core concern for engineers. The challenges faced by cutting tools vary from continuous cutting of gray cast iron to intermittent machining of ductile iron: high-speed cutting of gray cast iron can easily cause wear on the back cutting surface, while intermittent working conditions of ductile iron can easily lead to the breakage of cutting edges. Faced with these processing difficulties in the "search for solutions" stage, the AC4000K series coated hard alloy material provides highly targeted technical breakthrough solutions. This series includes three grades: AC4010K, AC4015K, and the new AC4125K. They are designed for high-speed precision machining, general machining, and strong intermittent rough machining conditions, respectively. Through the collaborative innovation of coating technology and substrate structure, the stability standards for cast iron turning have been redefined.
Core Technology Breakthrough: Coating Architecture and Surface Treatment Process
To understand why the AC4000K series stands out in cast iron processing, it is necessary to deeply analyze its coating architecture. Traditional coated cutting tools often peel off during high-speed cutting of cast iron due to insufficient bonding strength between the coating and the substrate, or cause chipping due to insufficient coating toughness. The AC4000K series adopts an innovative composite coating structure, which perfectly combines the crystal orientation controlled alumina layer with the carbon rich ultrafine grain TiCN layer.
Firstly, the surface layer is made of crystal orientation controlled alumina (Al ₂ O3) layer. By precisely controlling the growth direction of alumina crystals, the anti crescent wear performance of this coating has reached twice that of conventional types. Crescent wear is one of the main causes of tool failure in high-speed cutting of gray cast iron, and the AC4000K series alumina layer can effectively resist diffusion wear at high temperatures, thereby significantly extending tool life.
Under the alumina layer, the AC4000K series adopts a carbon rich ultrafine grain TiCN layer. This coating has extremely high hardness and resistance to back cutting wear, with its wear resistance reaching twice that of conventional types. The introduction of carbon rich components further enhances the wear resistance of the coating, enabling it to maintain a sharp cutting edge for a long time during continuous cutting of gray cast iron.
To ensure that these two layers of coating do not peel off under harsh cutting forces, the AC4000K series also applies high adhesion technology. By smoothing the cutting edge treatment (reducing the surface roughness from Rz0.15 μ m to 0.07 μ m), the anti peeling ability of the coating has been significantly improved. In addition, the series also adopts special surface treatment technology, which makes the compressive stress more than twice that of conventional types, and the anti chipping performance also reaches twice that of conventional types. This dual guarantee of "external wear resistance and internal anti chipping" enables the AC4000K series to cover a wide range from high-speed precision machining to strong intermittent rough machining when processing various types of cast iron.
Three major brand positioning and chip breaker selection strategy
The AC4000K series is not a single brand, but consists of three members with clear positioning, and engineers can accurately match them according to specific processing conditions.
AC4010K: The preferred choice for high-speed precision machining
AC4010K is the preferred recommended grade for processing gray cast iron. Its ultra thick film coating technology enables it to achieve ultra-high speed cutting of up to 2300 SFM. When cutting gray cast iron continuously, the wear of the back cutting surface of AC4010K is significantly lower than that of conventional K10 material and competitor A. After 5 minutes of cutting, the cutting edge of AC4010K still remains intact, while conventional tools and competitor A show obvious wear and chipping. For precision machining conditions that pursue ultimate efficiency and surface quality, AC4010K is the ideal choice.
AC4015K: A Stable Choice for Universal Processing
AC4015K is the preferred recommended grade for processing ductile iron. Its high adhesion and high-strength coating enable it to achieve stable and long tool life under general processing and light intermittent working conditions. In the continuous cutting test of ductile iron (100-70-03), the wear of the back cutting surface of AC4015K was consistently lower than that of AC4010K and competitor C (K15) within 30 minutes of cutting time. In the testing of intermittent cutting of ductile iron, the anti chipping performance of AC4015K is also excellent, with only slight chipping after 240 seconds of cutting, while conventional K15 tools show severe chipping and damage.
