SUMITOMO PSZ Turn Quick Change System Selection and Troubleshooting

In sliding head lathes, multi spindle lathes, and precision machining of small parts, tool change downtime, tool head repeat positioning accuracy, and coolant supply method often directly determine production line efficiency and part consistency. The PSZ Turn series quick replacement system revolves around three points: using a clamping screw to complete the tool head replacement, ensuring repeatability with a polygonal conical structure, and directly delivering coolant to the cutting edge through an internal cooling channel. For engineers who are looking for "how to quickly change tools without sacrificing rigidity", understanding the tool head system, selection logic, and common troubleshooting paths of PSZ Turn can significantly reduce trial cutting and downtime.

The core structure of PSZ Turn: single screw clamping and polygonal cone surface

The most intuitive feature of PSZ Turn is "one screwdriver head". The handle and blade are positioned through a polygonal conical surface. Loosen the clamping screw to remove the blade, install a new blade, and tighten it. The official repeatability is within 5 μ m, covering the X-axis, Z-axis, and Y-axis center height directions. This means that after replacing different tool heads on the same handle, there is no need to frequently re align the tool, especially suitable for sliding head lathes with multiple process merging.

The polygonal cone surface is not a simple cone fitting, but rather improves torsional rigidity through multi-faceted contact. Compared with the integral tool holder, the modular connection of PSZ Turn does not significantly sacrifice stability, but instead reduces tool holder inventory and downtime due to the independent replacement of the blade head. The handle provides metric 10, 12, 16, 20mm and imperial. 375,. 500,. 625,. 750 inch square handles, and the blade head can be used interchangeably for both metric and imperial handle sizes. All knife handles are optional for internal cooling, with coolant flowing directly from the inside of the handle to the blade head, reducing external hoses and fittings and avoiding chip entanglement.

Knife head system: from cutting grooves, threading to turning back

The tool head of PSZ Turn covers turning, grooving, threading, backturning, and profiling. Common series include:

PSZ GNDR/GNDL: External groove cutting and cutting. GNDR is right-handed and GNDL is left-handed, compatible with GCMN series blades, with a cutting width covering 1.25mm to 3.0mm and a cutting depth covering 7mm to 17mm. Suitable for small part groove cutting, retaining ring groove cutting, and cutting.

PSZ SVJB/SVJC/SVHC: External turning and profiling. SVJB and SVJC are used for outer circle profiling, while SVHC is used for multi-purpose profiling and end face. Suitable for VBMT, VCMT and other positive angle blades, suitable for contour machining and end face turning.

PSZ PCLN/PDJN: External turning and end turning. PCLN is compatible with CNMG/CNMM, while PDJN is compatible with DNMG/DNMM, covering rough to fine machining.

PSZ SBT: Back turning tool head. Used for back turning and chamfering, suitable for sliding head lathes to complete back processing in one clamping, reducing secondary clamping.

PSZ TGAR: outer circular groove. Suitable for TGAR series slotting blades, covering cutting widths of 0.8mm to 4.8mm, suitable for deep slotting and cutting.

PSZ ER: External thread cutting head. Compatible with 16ER series thread inserts, covering ISO metric, UN unified threads, Whitworth, NPT, BSPT and other tooth types, suitable for external thread turning.

TTE: Threaded blade, compatible with PSZ TGAR cutting head, used for internal and external threads, covering 60 ° and 55 ° tooth profiles.

When selecting, first determine the process: select GNDR/GNDL or TGAR for groove cutting; PCLN/PDJN is selected for external turning; Select SVJB/SVJC/SVHC for imitation; Choose SBT for the back car; Choose ER or TTE for threads. Re determine the tool holder size: Small part lathes commonly use 10mm or 12mm square handles, and multi spindle lathes commonly use 16mm or 20mm. Finally, match the blade material: choose AC530U, AC5015S, AC5025S for steel parts; Choose AC5015S and AC5025S for stainless steel; Cast iron selected AC425K; Choose H1 and DL1500 for non-ferrous metals; BN2000 and DA2200 are selected as high hardness materials.

Installation and tool replacement: details determine repeatability accuracy

The repeatability accuracy of PSZ Turn depends on cone cleaning and clamping torque. When changing the knife, the handle cone and blade cone should be cleaned with non-woven fabric or compressed air first to confirm that there are no chips, oil stains, or burrs. When installing the blade, align the cone surface of the blade with the cone surface of the handle, gently push it into place by hand, and then tighten the clamping screw. It is recommended to use a torque wrench, and the torque values refer to the specifications of the tool holder: PSZ10 and PSZ12 are usually 2-3.5N · m, PSZ16 is 3.5-5N · m, and PSZ20 is 5-7.5N · m. Insufficient torque can cause loosening and vibration of the tool head, while excessive torque can damage the cone surface or screws.

After changing the tool, it is recommended to use a dial gauge to check the offset of the tool tip in the X, Z, and Y directions. If the repeated accuracy is found to be out of tolerance, priority should be given to checking whether there are foreign objects on the cone surface, whether the cutting head is completely attached, and whether the screws are worn. When the cone surface is pulled or the screw is fatigued, the blade or clamping screw should be replaced. The blade of PSZ Turn can be replaced separately, without the need to replace the entire handle, which reduces maintenance costs.

Common troubleshooting

1. Dimensional deviation or center height change after tool change

Reason: There are chips or oil stains on the cone surface, the blade is not properly attached, the screw torque is insufficient, and the cone surface of the blade is worn. Solution: Clean the cone surface, tighten it to the recommended torque, and recheck it with a dial gauge; If the conical surface is worn, replace the cutting head.

2. Vibration or chatter

Reason: The handle overhang is too long, the center height is inaccurate, the rigidity of the blade head is insufficient, and the blade groove shape is not suitable. Solution: Shorten the overhang and adjust the center height to within ± 0.1mm; It is recommended to have a center height of 0 to+0.2mm during slotting and cutting; choose a sharp slotting type or reduce the feed rate; Check if the connection between the handle and blade is loose.

3. Coolant leakage or insufficient pressure

Reason: The connector is not tightened, the sealing ring is damaged, the hose is aging, and the internal cooling channel is blocked. Solution: Check the Plug&Play connector, replace the sealing ring and hose; Clean the internal cooling channel with compressed air; Confirm that the coolant pressure is within the recommended range. The PSZ Turn handle supports internal cooling and the pressure can be adjusted to low/high/off for different working conditions.

4. Poor chip entanglement or chip removal

Reason: Mismatched chip groove, low feed rate, coolant not aligned with cutting edge, blade wear. Solution: Increase feed rate or cutting depth; Select suitable chip breakers; Adjust the direction of the internal cooling nozzle; Replace the sharp blade. When cutting grooves, the GNDR/GNDL blade combined with internal cooling can significantly improve chip removal.

5. Thread profile exceeding tolerance or disorderly teeth

Reasons: incorrect pitch, improper blade installation, mismatch between feed and spindle speed, and deviation in tool tip height. Solution: Verify the model and pitch of the threaded blade; Reinstall the blade; Check encoder synchronization; Adjust the center height. PSZ ER blade head is compatible with 16ER series blades, pay attention to cleaning the blade positioning surface during installation.

6. The groove width exceeds the tolerance or the groove bottom is rough

Reason: Inconsistent blade width, insufficient rigidity of the cutting head, excessive feed rate, and improper cutting speed. Solution: Choose blades that match the cutting width; Shorten overhang; Reduce feed rate; Increase cutting speed or use internal cooling. TGAR blade covers a cutting width of 0.8-4.8mm, pay attention to the maximum cutting depth limit when selecting.

7. Broken blade or blade damage

Reason: Intermittent impact, insufficient material toughness, excessive parameters, and loose blade installation. Solution: Choose materials with better toughness; Reduce feed and cutting depth; Check blade clamping; Under intermittent working conditions, AC5015S, AC5025S, or BN2000 should be preferred.

Gang Plate and Automated Production Line

The PSZ Turn handle can be installed on the Gang Plate for quick replacement of multiple cutting positions. The advantages of Gang Plate are reduced downtime, quick tool change, no cooling hose entanglement, and the ability to use standard tool holders. The coolant is connected through the Plug&Play interface of the PSZ quick change system, with flexible configuration that allows for individual adjustment of the cooling pressure for each tool position. For automated production lines and unmanned workshops, this modular design reduces manual tool alignment errors and improves tool change consistency.

Recommended cutting parameters and material matching

According to the workpiece material, PSZ Turn blades can be matched with different materials and parameters:

Steel parts: AC530U, AC5015S, AC5025S, cutting speed 160-650 SFM, feed rate 0.001-0.004 IPR.

Stainless steel: AC5015S, AC5025S, cutting speed 160-650 SFM, feed rate 0.001-0.004 IPR.

Cast iron: AC425K, AC4010K, AC4015K, cutting speed 200-1300 SFM, feed rate 0.002-0.008 IPR.

Heat resistant alloys: AC5015S, AC5025S, cutting speed 65-260 SFM, feed rate 0.001-0.003 IPR.

Nonferrous metals: H1, DL1500, cutting speed 650-1000 SFM, feed rate 0.002-0.006 IPR.

High hardness materials: BN2000, DA2200, cutting speed 260-400 SFM, feed rate 0.001-0.003 IPR.

When cutting and slicing, the feed rate is usually 0.001-0.004 IPR, and the cutting depth is limited by the blade and head. When threading, the feed is equal to the pitch, and the cutting speed is selected according to the material.

Maintenance and spare parts

The spare parts for PSZ Turn include clamping screws, blade screws, washers, torque wrenches, and lubricants. It is recommended to regularly check the clamping screws and the cone surface of the blade, and replace them promptly if wear is found. Torque wrenches should be calibrated regularly to ensure consistent clamping force. When the blade is not in use, the cone surface should be cleaned and coated with anti rust oil, and stored in a dedicated box to avoid collision. Coolant hoses and fittings should be regularly inspected to prevent aging and leakage.
