In steel precision machining, tool failure is often not caused by a single factor. Rear blade wear, crescent wear, hot cracks, broken edges, deteriorated surface roughness, and chip entanglement may occur simultaneously, requiring engineers to repeatedly weigh the material, groove type, parameters, and cooling method. The T2100Z coated metal ceramic grade is designed specifically for this type of precision machining pain point. It provides high stability in light to continuous cutting and light intermittent cutting by combining a new metal ceramic substrate with an ABS OTECH coating, making it particularly suitable for precision machining processes that focus on the wear and fracture resistance of the back cutting surface. This article compiles a selection and troubleshooting guide for on-site engineers from six aspects: technical features, scope of application, chip breaker selection, recommended parameters, practical cases, and troubleshooting.
Technical positioning of T2100Z: Advantages of precision machining of metal ceramics
T2100Z belongs to coated metal ceramics and is positioned for steel turning precision machining. Compared with coated hard alloys, metal ceramics have better adhesion resistance and surface quality in the low to medium speed and low to medium feed range. The typical characteristic values of T2100Z include a hardness of approximately 92.0 HRA, a bending strength of approximately 2.2 GPa, and the use of an ABS OTECH coating with a coating thickness of approximately 3 μ m. Officially defined as the preferred metal ceramic grade for steel turning, it is characterized by high stability achieved through a tough new matrix and supports multiple processing types.
From the perspective of application scope, T2100Z covers the range of light cutting, continuous cutting to light intermittent cutting, with cutting speeds ranging from medium to high speeds. Compared with uncoated metal ceramics T1000A and T1500A, as well as coated metal ceramics T1500Z, T2500Z, and T3000Z, T2100Z has a wider application range and higher stability. At the boundary between metal ceramics and hard alloys, when wear on the back cutting surface is the main form of damage, T2100Z exhibits outstanding performance in the low to medium speed and low to medium feed range; When crescent wear or adhesion becomes the main issue, hard alloy grades such as AC8115P and AC8025P need to be considered.
This means that T2100Z is not intended to replace all steel turning materials, but rather to focus on the working conditions of "surface quality priority, controllable wear of the back cutting surface, and high requirements for fracture resistance" in precision machining and semi precision machining. If severe crescent wear, high-speed feed or strong intermittent impact occurs during processing, hard alloy should be given priority consideration; If the processing pursues a smooth surface, stable dimensions, and good chip control, T2100Z is a more suitable starting point.
New substrate and coating: resistance to crack propagation and thermal crack suppression
The core breakthrough of T2100Z lies in the new metal ceramic matrix. Official information shows that the new matrix uses a specialized tough alloy, which significantly inhibits crack propagation. In microstructure comparison, the crack propagation of T2100Z is significantly less than that of conventional grades. In the comparison after cutting on the surface of the alloy, the hot cracks of T2100Z were suppressed, while obvious hot cracks appeared in conventional grades. This means that in continuous cutting and light intermittent cutting, T2100Z can delay the initiation and propagation of hot cracks, thereby reducing chipping and sudden failure.
In terms of coating, the ABSOTECH coating provides wear resistance and adhesion resistance. The coating thickness is about 3 μ m, balancing wear resistance and toughness. For precision machining, a coating that is too thick can easily lead to blade passivation, while a coating that is too thin can result in insufficient wear resistance; The 3 μ m ABSOTECH coating achieves a balance between the two. Combined with the high toughness of the new matrix, T2100Z exhibits a stable wear curve on the back cutting surface in continuous cylindrical turning and a higher number of fracture resistance in intermittent cylindrical turning.

Chip groove selection: decision-making path between negative angle and positive angle
T2100Z can be paired with various chip breakers, including negative angle M-level, negative angle G-level, positive angle M-level, and positive angle G-level. The first step in selection is to determine the blade shape and main chip breaker.
The main chip breaking groove of the negative angle blade is ESU, officially labeled as the universal preferred option. Around ESU, detailed selection can be made based on the fault symptoms:
Chip length and need to strengthen chip control: choose ELU or EFL. ELU is suitable for negative angle chip control, while EFL is suitable for small depth precision machining.
