In order to accurately grasp the problems of industrial development, understand the operating conditions of water enterprises, and identify the practical goals of pollution reduction and carbon reduction of sewage plants, the Environment Chamber of Commerce organized some member enterprises to hold industrial seminars, and invited Professor Wang Hongchen from Renmin University to jointly discuss the opportunities and challenges of the sewage treatment industry and the annual development of water enterprises under the current "dual carbon" goal. China's urban sewage treatment facilities after the "eleventh Five-Year" to "thirteen Five-Year" period of high-speed construction, has formed a large-scale treatment capacity. Official data show that the number of sewage treatment plants in China has increased from 2,496 in 2010 to 5,626 in 2020, and the sewage treatment capacity has also increased from 120 million cubic meters per day in 2010 to 220 million cubic meters per day in 2020.
According to statistics, the electricity consumption of China's sewage treatment industry accounts for about 1% of the country's total electricity consumption, while carbon emissions account for about 2% of the country's total emissions. China's sewage production and treatment scale ranks first in the world, and has been growing for a decade. With the implementation of upgrading in various places, the energy consumption of sewage treatment in China will be further increased. In the face of huge energy consumption and material consumption, it is imperative to reduce carbon emission in the field of sewage treatment. How to reduce energy consumption and carbon emission in wastewater treatment process design and selection has become a hot topic in the industry.
For sewage treatment plants, carbon emissions mainly come from two aspects, one is the direct carbon emissions of various greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4 and N2O) caused by organic degradation and nitrogen conversion in the sewage treatment process; The second is the consumption of electricity and medicine, which indirectly produces carbon emissions. In view of these aspects, how should the sewage treatment industry operate? What should be the carbon reduction path of sewage treatment industry?
In response, Wang Hongchen, a professor at Renmin University of China, sorted out the global carbon situation. In 2019, the global carbon emissions were nearly 60 billion tons, and the three major greenhouse gases CO2, CH4 and N2O accounted for 97.9% of the total carbon emissions, accounting for 74.4%, 17.3% and 6.2% respectively. The emissions of these gases mainly involve four major industry categories: energy utilization, agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry, industrial production and waste disposal, accounting for 73.2%, 18.4%, 5.2% and 3.2% respectively. Waste disposal accounted for 3.2%, including garbage treatment, industrial wastewater treatment and domestic sewage treatment, of which waste water discharge accounted for 1.3%. CO2 mainly comes from energy utilization, CH4, N2O comes from the other three categories of direct emissions, drainage and sewage treatment industry is also an important source of emissions.
For the carbon emission reduction of sewage treatment, Professor Wang Hongchen put forward several technical path suggestions:
1. Reduce all anaerobic links in the sewage treatment system, gradually eliminate septic tanks, reduce pipeline siltation, and eliminate anaerobic areas in treatment facilities.
2, study and prevent N2O accumulation, prevent N2O production into the biological treatment operation control system.
3, the operation control and fine management to a new level, and strive to reduce energy and material consumption.
As a water enterprise with a mission in the shoulder, nearly a year after the "30·60" dual carbon goal was proposed, they have also increased their actions and started the collaborative governance of pollution reduction and carbon reduction.
