Beckhoff CP69xx Built in Control Panel: DVI/USB Extended Long Distance Transmission and Cabinet Installation Guide

In modern industrial automation systems, operator panels often need to be deployed on on-site control cabinets tens of meters away from the host. Traditional DVI and USB transmission distances are limited (usually not exceeding 5 meters), making it difficult to meet the layout requirements of large production lines. The Beckhoff CP69xx series built-in control panel is designed to address this pain point, with its core advantage being support for DVI Extended and USB Extended long-distance transmission technologies, extending video and touch signals up to 50 meters through standard cables. This article will be based on the CP69xx series technical manual, providing in-depth analysis of the panel's long-distance signal transmission architecture, rapid installation process of cabinets, power wiring specifications, definition of status indicator lights, and systematic troubleshooting process, providing on-site engineers with a full stack technical reference from deployment to maintenance.


Chapter 1: Product Positioning and Long Range Transmission Technology

1.1 Overview of Applicable Scenarios and Selection

The CP69xx series is a built-in single touch control panel designed specifically for installation on control cabinet doors or console panels. The front panel protection level reaches IP65 (dustproof and anti spray water), and the rear protection level is IP20. This series offers a variety of display sizes and resolution options from 5.7 inches to 19 inches (including 4:3 and 5:4 ratios), and different front-end laminates can be selected according to requirements:

Pure display (no buttons)

Equipped with function keys (including 10 PLC special keys with LED)

Equipped with a digital PC keyboard (US layout, including 10 PLC special keys with LED)

PC keyboard with alphanumeric (US layout, including 10 PLC special keys with LED)

It is strictly prohibited to use the equipment in areas with explosive hazards.

1.2 DVI Extended Long Distance Video Transmission

The CP69xx is equipped with a DVI Extended input interface (X101), which supports transmitting DVI video signals from industrial PCs up to a maximum distance of 50 meters.

Technical principle: Standard DVI signals will experience severe distortion during long-distance transmission (>10 meters). CP69xx integrates a signal processor internally, which can fully regenerate and restore attenuated and distorted DVI signals at the receiving end, ensuring image quality during long-distance transmission. The industrial PC only needs to have a standard DVI output interface.

Key engineering constraint: When the transmission distance is large, the data transmission rate of DDC (Display Data Channel) files must be limited to 50kHz or below. The DDC file is used to inform the properties of the PC monitor, such as timing and resolution. If the value is too high, it may cause no image display during the startup process, or the screen may not appear until after Windows starts. Engineers need to confirm and adjust this parameter in the VideoBIOS or Windows graphics card driver of the graphics card.

1.3 USB Extended Long Distance Touch Transmission

The CP69xx is equipped with a USB Extended input interface (X102) in the form of an RJ45 socket, which is used in conjunction with the CU8801 USB to USB Extended conversion box. It can extend USB 2.0 (480 Mbit/s) signals to the control panel through a 50 meter CAT-5 network cable.

Important clarification: This is USB Extended proprietary technology, not standard Ethernet. No Ethernet switches or hubs shall be connected in series in the middle of the cable. The CU8801 conversion box needs to be installed on the DIN rail on the industrial PC side, and the extended signal will be converted back to standard USB inside the panel.

Interface comparison:

X103 (USB input): Standard B-type socket, used for short distance direct connection up to 5 meters.

X102 (USB Extended Input): RJ45 socket, used for long-distance transmission up to 50 meters (requires CU8801).

X104, X105 (USB output): Standard A-type socket used to connect peripheral devices such as keyboards, mice, USB drives, etc.


Chapter 2: Mechanical Installation and Cabinet Drilling Process

2.1 Hole preparation and size acquisition

The installation dimensions of CP69xx need to be obtained through the "Technical Drawing Download" on the Beckhoff official website. When preparing to open holes in the control cabinet, it is important to pay attention to the following points:

Wall thickness requirement: The installation wall thickness should be between 2mm and 5mm.

Installation direction: The device is only allowed to be installed vertically to ensure internal air convection and heat dissipation.

Environmental factors: The installation location should avoid direct light sources from reflecting on the screen and prevent direct sunlight from shining on the equipment.

2.2 Installation process of quick locking mechanism

CP69xx adopts a pull out clamping lever fixing method without loose parts, which does not require additional screws and significantly improves the installation efficiency inside the cabinet.
