Hirschmann RS20/RS30/RS40 Series Industrial Switches Multi Model Selection and PoE Deployment Guide

Introduction: A versatile family covering 100Mbps, PoE, and redundancy

In industrial network design, engineers often face the dilemma of requiring both economical 100Mbps access and gigabit uplink for the same project; It should be used in ordinary workshops and deployed in ships or explosion-proof areas; Some devices also require PoE power supply for IP cameras or wireless APs. The Hirschmann RS20/RS30/RS40 series (including RS22/RS32 PoE sub series) is designed for this complex requirement - covering almost all application scenarios of industrial Ethernet switches, from 4-port to 25 port, from pure 100Mbps to Gigabit Combo, from standard temperature to -40 ° C extended temperature width, from ordinary DIN rails to ship specific seismic installations. This article is based on the latest installation manual, systematically sorting out the model decoding, mechanical installation, redundant power supply wiring, PoE power supply unit selection, DIP switch ring network configuration, SFP selection, and explosion-proof compliance points of this series, helping engineers to accurately select and efficiently deploy among numerous variants.


Chapter 1 Product Family and Model Decoding

1.1 Four Basic Platforms

This series includes four core platforms:

RS20: Without gigabit ports, it provides 4-25 100Mbps ports and supports 2-4 uplink ports (optional fiber or twisted pair), making it the most basic access layer device.

RS22: PoE enhanced version of RS20, with the last 4 ports supporting IEEE 802.3af PoE (maximum 15.4W per port), suitable for powering terminal devices.

RS30: Provides 2 Gigabit uplink ports (SFP or RJ45 Combo), with 8-24 100Mbps ports, suitable for aggregation scenarios that require high bandwidth uplink.

RS32: The PoE version of RS30, with the last 4 ports having PoE functionality.

RS40: Full Gigabit device, providing 9 Gigabit ports (including 4 Combo SFP/RJ45), without 100Mbps ports, suitable for full Gigabit networks.

Model code key (see Table 2 and Table 5 in the manual):

Position 6-7: Number of 100Mbps ports (such as 08, 16, 24)

Position 8-9: Number of Gigabit Ports (00 or 02, RS40 is 09)

Positions 10-13: Upstream port media (T1=RJ45, M2=multimode DSC, S2=single-mode DSC, O6=SFP gigabit slot, Z6=SFP 100Mbps slot, etc.)

Position 14: Temperature Range (S=0~60 ° C, T=-40~70 ° C, E=-40~70 ° C with Three proof Coating)

Position 15: Voltage Range (D=9.6~60V DC or 18~30V AC, P=47~52V DC specifically for PoE)

Position 16: Certification (A, H, B, B includes ATEX/IECEx)

Selection examples (Table 3 and Table 4 in the manual):

RS20-0900MM2SDAP: 9 100Mbps ports, 3 multimode fiber uplink (MMM2), standard temperature, 9.6~60V DC, certified A, professional version software.

RS30-0802O6T1TDAE: 8 100Mbps+2 1G, port 1 is SFP slot, port 2 is RJ45, extended temperature, certified D, enhanced software.

RS40-0009CCCCED: 9 Gigabit, 4 Combo (SFP/RJ45), Extended Temperature Strip Coating, Certified A, Professional Edition.


Chapter 2 Mechanical Installation and Grounding

2.1 DIN rail installation and special requirements for ships

All models support 35mm DIN rail installation (compliant with DIN EN 60715), the steps are as follows:

Hang the upper hook of the device onto the upper edge of the guide rail.

Use a screwdriver to pull down the lock buckle and press the lower part of the device towards the guide rail.

Release the lock buckle and secure the device in place.

For ship applications (RS30-0802 series): Due to frequent hull vibrations, it is necessary to use the Open Rail Mounting Kit (Attachment 942 007-001 or 942 007-101) to install shock absorbers on both sides of the equipment and cooperate with standard DIN rail limiters to avoid resonance and equipment loosening. If space is limited, 942 007-101 (rail to rail installation) can be used.

2.2 Wall mounted installation (RS232/RS32)

RS22 and RS32 can be optionally equipped with wall mounting plates (Attachment 943 971-001 or 943 971-002) to vertically fix the equipment to the wall. During installation, it is necessary to maintain a heat dissipation gap of at least 10cm vertically and 2cm horizontally.

2.3 Functional Grounding

All models have an independent grounding screw in the lower left corner of the front panel, which must be connected to the system grounding bar using a copper wire with a cross-sectional area not less than the power wire diameter (at least 1.0mm ²/AWG16). The grounding wire must be connected first and disconnected last.

Chapter 3 Power Supply and PoE Power Supply Configuration

3.1 Power wiring for non PoE models (RS20/RS30/RS40)

6-pin terminal block pin definition (manual figure 20):

Pin 1:+24V (P1) - DC positive or AC phase line

Pin 2:0V - DC return line or AC neutral line

Pin 3, 4: Signal contact (normally closed)

Pin 5:0V

Pin 6:+24V (P2)

Voltage range: DC 9.6~60V (rated 12~24V), AC 18~30V (rated 24V). During redundant power supply, the two inputs are internally decoupled, and the higher voltage is automatically selected. If only a single channel is used, the device will report a power loss alarm, which can be blocked through management configuration.
