Product Overview and Applicable Scenarios
The Eaton XV-102-L series touchscreen display is a compact, high-performance human-machine interface (HMI) device, with some models also integrating PLC functionality. It uses an 800 MHz RISC processor, equipped with a resistive touch screen, and offers three display sizes of 3.5 inches, 5.7 inches, and 7.0 inches, suitable for monitoring, operation, and control tasks in machine and system manufacturing. This series supports Ethernet, USB, RS-232, RS-485, and CAN interfaces, and has been certified by UL and DNV GL classification societies. It can be used in non hazardous areas or explosion-proof environments in Zone 22 (specific installation requirements must be met). For automation projects that require high reliability and limited installation space, XV-102-L is the ideal solution.
This article is based on the official hardware manual MN048030EN (version 01/2024) and focuses on providing a complete set of installation, wiring, and fault handling steps for electrical engineers and system integrators.
Safety preparation before installation
Before coming into contact with XV-102-L equipment, the following safety regulations must be strictly followed, otherwise it may result in electric shock, equipment damage, or personal injury.
2.1 Personnel Qualification Requirements
Installation, wiring, and maintenance work must be carried out by certified electricians or trained electrical engineers in accordance with EN 50110-1/-2 standards.
All operators must read and understand the relevant content of this manual.
2.2 Power outage and anti-static measures
Disconnect the 24V power supply of the equipment before installation and take measures to prevent accidental reconnection.
Confirm that the power supply is completely isolated and cover or isolate adjacent live parts.
Before touching the device, release body static electricity (such as touching grounded metal objects) to avoid damaging internal sensitive components.
2.3 Grounding and equipotential connection
Functional grounding (FE) must be connected to protective grounding (PE) or equipotential bonding. The system integrator is responsible for implementing this connection.
If there is a potential difference between the functional grounding system of different devices and the ground, it may generate a large balanced current, leading to signal interference and even fire. When necessary, equipotential bonding conductors with a cross-sectional area several times larger than the shielding layer should be laid in parallel along the cable.
2.4 Cable Routing Rules
Signal cables should not be laid in the same cable tray as power cables to avoid inductive or capacitive coupling interference.
All interface cables must use shielded cables, and the shielding layer should be connected to the connector housing with low impedance.
If the equipment is to be used in a DNV GL environment, a radio interference suppression filter (such as Eaton XT-FIL-1 or XT-FIL-2) must be installed at the 24V power supply inlet, and the metal base plate of the filter must be well grounded.
2.5 Emergency Stop and Fault Protection
The emergency stop device that complies with IEC/EN 60204-1 must be effective in all operating modes and cannot automatically restart after the emergency stop device is released.
If the malfunction of the automation system may cause personnel or property damage, external independent safety measures must be taken (such as mechanical interlocking, independent limit switches, etc.).
Installation location and environmental requirements
3.1 Permitted Environmental Conditions
Parameter indicators
Environmental temperature (operating) 0 ℃~+50 ℃ (natural convection)
Environmental temperature (storage/transportation) -20 ℃~+60 ℃
Relative humidity 10%~95%, no condensation
Air pressure 795~1080 hPa, maximum altitude 2000 meters
Installation inclination angle in the vertical direction ≤ 45 ° (within 50 ℃)
Avoid direct sunlight: UV rays can make the plastic casing brittle and shorten the lifespan of the equipment. It should be installed in a shaded position or protected by a protective cover.
Heat dissipation and ventilation: The equipment adopts natural convection passive heat dissipation without fans. It is necessary to ensure a gap of at least 30mm around (up, down, left, right) and not block the heat dissipation holes. If there are other heating elements (such as transformers) inside the control cabinet, the distance should be greater than 15cm.
3.2 Installation Hole Size
XV-102-L adopts a flush mounting method and is clamped from the back by a fixed bracket. The opening size requirements are as follows:
Model Width (e) mm Height (f) mm Panel Thickness
3.5 inches 123 ± 1 87 ± 1 2~5 mm
5.7 inches 157 ± 1 117 ± 1 2~5 mm
7.0 inches 197 ± 1 122 ± 1 2~5 mm
The flatness of the opening plane is ≤ 0.5 mm, and the surface roughness Rz is ≤ 120 μ m (meeting IP65 sealing requirements).
The panel material must have sufficient rigidity, otherwise reinforcement bars need to be added. The sealing gasket must be correctly inserted into the groove on the back of the housing.
