Square D 8903SVO11V02 Type S Lighting Contactor

The Square D 8903SVO11V02 is a Type S mechanically held lighting contactor from Schneider Electric's Square D product line. This three-pole device is rated at 200 A and is designed for heavy-duty industrial and commercial lighting control applications. The mechanically held design ensures that the contactor remains in its last commanded state (latched) without continuous coil power, significantly reducing energy consumption and heat generation. The open-style enclosure is suitable for panel or surface mounting. The contactor is UL Listed and CSA Certified.

Technical Specifications

The 8903SVO11V02 is a 3-pole (3P) contactor with 3 normally open (NO) main contacts. The contact rating is 200 A. The coil is rated 110/120 V AC, 50/60 Hz, and is interchangeable with other common voltages up to 600 V AC. The contactor has a mechanical life of 1000 cycles per minute. The contactor is an open-style device without an enclosure, suitable for installation inside control cabinets. Dimensions: 9.14 inches (232 mm) tall × 6.00 inches (152 mm) wide × 6.72 inches (171 mm) deep. Power ratings: 69.2 kW at 200 V, 79.6 kW at 230 V, 131.6 kW at 380 V, 159.3 kW at 460 V, and 199 kW at 575 V. Operating temperature: 0°C to 40°C. Connection type: box lug terminals, screw clamp. Mounting: surface mounting. Replacement contact kits and interchangeable coils are available for serviceability.

Key Features

  • 3-pole, 200 A continuous current rating for high-power lighting loads

  • Mechanically held design reduces coil power consumption and heat generation

  • 110/120 V AC, 50/60 Hz coil (field-replaceable)

  • Open-style enclosure for panel or surface mounting

  • 3 normally open (NO) main contacts for reliable switching

  • Serviceable design with replacement contact kits available

  • UL Listed, CSA Certified for safety compliance

  • Robust construction for long mechanical and electrical endurance

  • Customizable with a wide range of accessories

Mechanically Held Operation

Unlike electrically held contactors that require continuous coil power to maintain contact closure, the mechanically held design uses a latching mechanism. A momentary pulse to the coil closes the contacts, and a mechanical latch holds them closed without any further power consumption. A second pulse (or a separate coil) releases the latch, opening the contacts. This results in significantly lower energy usage and reduced heat dissipation within the control cabinet, making it ideal for applications where the contactor remains closed for long periods (e.g., lighting circuits for an entire shift). The mechanically held feature also eliminates the hum typically associated with AC-powered electrically held contactors.

Applications

The 8903SVO11V02 is designed for lighting control applications where a lighting circuit may need to be disconnected for periodic maintenance. Typical uses include industrial lighting control in factories and warehouses, commercial building lighting management (parking lots, malls), roadway and highway lighting control, area lighting applications, and resistance heating loads. The contactor can also be used in other applications requiring heavy-duty power switching. The 200 A rating is suitable for controlling large banks of lighting fixtures in high-bay industrial environments.

Installation and Wiring

Mount the contactor on a flat surface using appropriate screws. The unit is not rated for direct mounting on combustible surfaces. Connect the three-phase power lines to the line-side terminals (L1, L2, L3) and the load (lighting circuit) to the load-side terminals (T1, T2, T3) using appropriately sized box lug connectors. Connect the 110/120 V AC control voltage to the coil terminals. For mechanically held operation, a maintained switch or a momentary contact closure is required to latch the contactor; a second circuit (or a separate coil) is needed to unlatch. Consult the wiring diagram on the contactor or in the installation manual for proper control circuit connections. Use appropriate overcurrent protection upstream of the contactor. Ensure all terminals are torqued to the specified value.

Maintenance and Serviceability

The 8903SVO11V02 is designed for long-term reliability. However, the contacts are subject to wear over time, particularly when switching high-current lighting loads. The contactor is serviceable: replacement contact kits are available, allowing the user to replace worn contacts rather than replacing the entire contactor. The coil is also interchangeable, permitting replacement without removing the unit from the panel. Periodically inspect the contacts for pitting or erosion. Check terminal tightness annually. The mechanically held design has fewer moving parts than some other contactor types, contributing to extended service life.

Environmental and Compliance

The contactor is UL Listed under File E78427 (CCN NRNT) and CSA Certified under File LR60905 Class 3231 01. It meets NEMA standards for industrial control equipment. The device contains no pilot lights or auxiliary contacts as standard; these can be added as accessories. The open style requires installation in an enclosure to maintain safety and protection against accidental contact. Operating temperature: 0°C to 40°C.

Conclusion

The Square D 8903SVO11V02 Type S mechanically held lighting contactor provides reliable, energy-efficient switching for high-current lighting circuits in industrial and commercial applications. Its 200 A capacity, 3-pole configuration, and serviceable design make it a practical choice for facilities requiring robust lighting control with reduced energy consumption.
