However, to truly unleash the potential of this platform, engineers must have a deep understanding of its hardware architecture, redundancy mechanisms, service deployment logic, and response strategies for common operational scenarios. Platform Family Overview and Selection Decision
The 7450 ESS offers five chassis forms, covering different scenarios from edge small capacity to core large convergence:
7450 ESS -1:1RU compact, with a throughput of up to 40 Gb/s (half duplex), integrated with single IOM and SF/CPM, suitable for small access points or CPE side deployment.
7450 ESS -6/ESS -6V: Medium capacity platform, throughput of 320 Gb/s, supports 4 IOM slots (up to 40 Gb/s full duplex per slot), ESS -6V adopts a vertical chassis design with a shallower depth (45.5 cm), suitable for cabinets with limited space.
7450 ESS -7: throughput of 1 Tb/s, 5 IOM slots, single slot capacity upgraded to 100 Gb/s (full duplex), suitable for regional aggregation nodes.
7450 ESS -12: Flagship model, throughput of 2 Tb/s (half duplex), 10 IOM slots, single slot also supports 100 Gb/s, providing up to 2880 Gigabit ports or 360 10G port densities in 1/3 standard rack.

Number of slots and MDA: The ESS 12 can accommodate 20 and a half slot MDA (each IOM supports 2 MDA), the ESS 7 has 10, the ESS 6 has 8, and the ESS 1 has 2 (integrated).
Advantages of FP2 chip: IOM3-XP and MDA-XP use self-developed FP2 network processors, supporting SyncE (synchronous Ethernet) and higher performance QoS queues. It is recommended that IOM3-XP be the preferred choice for new deployments.
Power and heat dissipation: All chassis support 1+1 redundant power supply (DC or AC, with an external A/C drive required for ESS -1), with different heat dissipation directions (ESS -12 for front rear air duct, ESS -7/6 for side back, ESS -1 for side side), and need to be matched with the airflow organization of the data center.
Hardware modular architecture and expansion path

All IOM, MDA, power supply, and fans can be hot swappable without the need to power off the entire machine during replacement.
When evolving from 10G to 100G, only the IOM needs to be replaced or a new IMM needs to be inserted, without the need to replace the backplane or chassis ("in place" upgrade), which is the core value of 7450 ESS investment protection.

3.1 Control plane redundancy (SF/CPM dual master control)
ESS -6/7/12 supports dual SF/CPM (switching and control module), with synchronized operating status. After enabling Non Stop Routing (NSR) and Non Stop Services (NSS), routing protocols (OSPF, BGP, IS-IS) and MPLS signaling (LDP, RSVP-TE) sessions are maintained during master control switching, adjacency is not interrupted, and business forwarding is not affected. Configuration suggestion:
