Basler MVC-300 Manual Voltage Controller: Characteristics and Engineering Applications

Introduction: The Last Line of Defense for the Reliability of Excitation Systems

In the excitation control system of a generator set, the automatic voltage regulator (AVR) is the core equipment that maintains stable output voltage. But even the most reliable electronic devices cannot completely rule out the possibility of faults - sensor transformer damage, power component failure, abnormal control circuit, any of which may cause AVR to fail to work properly, thereby causing the generator output voltage to lose control and endangering equipment and grid safety.

Basler Electric's MVC-300 electronic manual voltage controller is a specialized device designed to address this risk. As an important component of a complete excitation system, the MVC-300 can quickly isolate the AVR and manually control the generator output by the operator in the event of a fault in the automatic voltage regulator, ensuring continuous power supply to critical loads.

1.1 Role of MVC-300 in Excitation System

MVC-300 is an all solid state electronic manual voltage controller designed specifically for use with Basler voltage regulators. It can provide reliable manual excitation control in the event of AVR failure, allowing operators to maintain power supply to critical and emergency loads until repairs are completed.

Suitable for Basler voltage regulators with rated continuous current of 7 amperes and below

The MVC-300 has multiple design highlights, making it an ideal choice for redundant strategies in excitation systems:

All solid state design

The MVC-300 adopts an all solid state electronic design with no mechanical moving parts, providing higher reliability and longer service life. Solid state design also means faster response speed and better vibration resistance, making it very suitable for the harsh environment of generator sites.

Wide voltage adaptability

The MVC-300 supports a wide range of input voltages from 120 to 240 Vac, allowing it to flexibly adapt to power generation systems of different voltage levels. This feature greatly simplifies the selection process and reduces the complexity of inventory management.

Multiple magnetic field output rated values

The MVC-300 offers multiple options for magnetic field output ratings, which can be flexibly selected according to the requirements of the accompanying AVR and exciter, ensuring sufficient manual control capability in various application scenarios.

Automatic voltage establishment circuit

The MVC-300 is equipped with an automatic voltage establishment circuit, which can automatically establish the output voltage when switching to manual mode, simplifying the operation process and reducing the operator's steps and pressure in emergency situations.

2. Working principle and operating mode

2.1 Basic working principle

The core function of the MVC-300 manual voltage controller is to provide a selectable manual control path between the AVR and the exciter. Its working principle is as follows:

Normal operation (OFF mode): The MVC-300 is completely disconnected from the AVR, and the AVR autonomously controls the excitation current. The MVC-300 does not participate in any regulation process.

Emergency switch (MANUAL mode): When the AVR fault is confirmed, the operator switches the MVC-300 to manual mode.

Manual control: In manual mode, the operator directly controls the current supplied to the exciter by adjusting the control knob on the MVC-300 panel, thereby manually maintaining the generator output voltage.

Voltage establishment: The built-in automatic voltage establishment circuit of MVC-300 ensures smooth voltage transition during the switching process, avoiding impact.

2.2 Operating Mode Status

OFF mode:

Completely isolate the connected AVR

No impact on the excitation system

Recommended location during normal operation

Extremely low or zero power consumption

MANUAL mode:

The operator adjusts the excitation current directly through the control knob

Built in automatic voltage establishment circuit to assist in startup

The output voltage is continuously monitored and adjusted by the operator

Maintain continuous operation of the generator during AVR faults

2.3 Remote control capability

Some MVC-300 models support remote control function, allowing operators to operate from a safe location far away from the generator room. This ability is particularly important in the following scenarios:
