Introduction: A debugging tool for industrial field HART devices
In modern process industries, the HART (High Speed Addressable Remote Sensor) protocol has become the industry standard for intelligent instrument configuration due to its unique advantage of superimposing digital communication on analog signals. Faced with HART field devices from ABB and numerous third-party manufacturers, engineers often require a portable, reliable, and fully functional handheld terminal for configuration, polling, and fine-tuning. The ABB DHH805-A configuration equipment is tailor-made for the engineering requirements of this type of "search solution" phase.
As a HART communication handheld controller designed specifically for device configuration, DHH805-A not only supports the underlying parameter configuration of ABB's full range of instruments, but also has the ability to expand to support third-party supplier devices. In order to help on-site engineers and equipment maintenance personnel quickly get started, this article will deeply analyze the entire process of unboxing preparation, PC software deployment, device activation, and communication synchronization of the equipment, and provide a detailed professional level configuration guide based on practical engineering experience.
Hardware unboxing and on-site assembly preparation
The delivery packaging of ABB DHH805-A adopts an anti-static polyester hard shell box, which stores abundant accessories inside to ensure safety and endurance in complex industrial environments. Before starting any configuration work, it is necessary to complete the correct hardware assembly and power on preparation.
1. Assembly of battery and casing
After opening the device packaging, engineers can find a rechargeable battery pack, a battery pack suitable for 4 AA alkaline batteries (located in a black paper box), a universal power adapter, a lead kit for connecting the transmitter, a USB communication cable, a DHH805-A host with a protective rubber case, an anti-static strap, and a DVD ROM containing the latest DD library.
The assembly steps are as follows:
Dismantling the protective shell: First, loosen the elastic handle strap and carefully remove the anti-static protective rubber shell from the host.
Install battery pack: Use a screwdriver to loosen the fixing screws located at the bottom of the battery compartment, install the included rechargeable battery pack, and tighten the fixing screws again.
Safety Warning: DHH805-A is only allowed to be used in safe areas (non explosion hazardous areas) during any hardware installation and power on operations. Battery replacement or charging operations are strictly prohibited in flammable and explosive environments.
Charging adapter: Find the battery charger and 4 power plug adapters in the accessory box, select the plug that matches the local AC power outlet, and insert it into the charger's AC power interface.
2. First power on and connection
After assembly, open the plastic protective cover located on the top of the host, insert the battery charger power cord, and connect the handheld device to the PC through a USB cable. At this point, the device backlight will automatically light up, and DHH805-A will automatically turn on and display a short message prompt. This connection step is essential for device power supply or communication through USB.
PC Tool software deployment and system environment requirements
In order to manage DD library files, upload and download device configurations, and activate devices for the first time, DHH805-A must be connected to a computer with DHH805 PC Tool software installed. Due to considerations of industrial site stability and compatibility with old equipment, this software has clear specifications for computer hardware and operating systems.
1. Software installation
Run the installation program from the DVD ROM inside the device packaging, and the driver installation process will gradually prompt for the necessary actions to be performed. During this process, the system may need to install Microsoft. NET Framework 3.5 or higher. If the on-site computer is not connected to the internet, it is recommended to prepare an offline installation package in advance to avoid installation interruptions.
2. Minimum System Requirements Configuration
Hardware environment: The processor needs to reach the Intel Pentium D 2.8 GHz or AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+level; Screen resolution not less than 1024 × 768; Broadband Internet connection (for online activation); And a DVD ROM drive.
Software environment: The operating system must be the latest patched version of Windows XP, Windows 7, or Windows Vista. In terms of memory, Windows XP (32-bit) requires 1GB, while Windows 7 and Vista (32-bit) recommend 1.5GB. The available hard disk space should be between 200MB and 2GB. These are the basic conditions for ensuring DD library parsing and stable operation of PC Tool.
Device activation: a critical leap from factory to availability
After the first startup, a prompt message will be displayed on the screen. At this point, the engineer needs to press the "On" button in the bottom right corner of the navigation key to enter the activation menu. Activation is a necessary step before the device is put into use, which is divided into two methods: "online activation through PC Tool" and "manual offline activation".
1. Activate through PC Tool
After selecting "Via PC Tool" on the DHH805-A screen, open the PC Tool software on the computer and click "File>Home" in the top bar to refresh the software homepage. At this point, the "Activate" button will be activated. Click to complete online activation. This process usually requires the computer to connect to the Internet. If the network is restricted, it is necessary to check whether the firewall or USB driver is working properly.
2. Manual activation
If the Internet environment cannot be provided on site, "Manually" can be selected. At this point, the engineer needs to input an activation code containing a hyphen. To obtain this activation code, it is necessary to provide ABB with the DHH805-A serial number (usually printed on the white cardboard box packaging or viewed in the device menu "Activation>Manual>Serial Number") and user contact information.
In order to ensure smooth manual activation, ABB has dedicated personnel in various regions around the world (such as Europe, America, India, and China have corresponding contacts), and engineers can obtain activation codes through official channels. After obtaining the activation code and entering it, DHH805-A declares successful activation and officially becomes a usable HART communication tool.

Communication synchronization and HART device configuration
After activation is completed, communication synchronization is necessary to achieve the interaction of DD library files and configuration data between the handheld device and the PC.
1. Enable monitoring mode
In the main menu of DHH805-A, use the right navigation key "Select" to select "Settings". Scroll down to the "Listening" option, confirm and turn on the listening mode. Subsequently, click "File>Home" again in PC Tool software to refresh the homepage. At this point, a connection is established between the PC and the handheld device, allowing for the exchange of the latest device description (DD) files.
2. On site HART device configuration
By correctly connecting the lead kit to the communication terminal of the HART instrument (usually labeled as HART or LOOP), DHH805-A can poll and fine tune the supported field devices. Thanks to its built-in DD library, it can seamlessly integrate with ABB's pressure, temperature, liquid level, and valve automation instruments. For example:
Pressure transmitter: supports range modification and zero adjustment of absolute pressure, gauge pressure, and differential pressure transmitters.
Temperature transmitter: Supports configuration of universal and high-temperature sensors.
Valve positioner: Supports stroke calibration of electrical valve positioners.
At the same time, the device has support options for third-party HART devices, and cross brand on-site debugging can be achieved by simply importing the corresponding DD files through PC Tool.
Best practices for on-site application and maintenance
1. Troubleshooting and daily maintenance
Unable to power on: Check if the battery pack is installed properly and if the USB cable is connected properly. If not used for a long time, it is recommended to use a charger to charge for more than 30 minutes.
Activation failed: Confirm the computer Whether the NET Framework version meets the requirements and whether the USB driver is recognized properly. If you choose manual activation, please carefully check the serial number and activation code to ensure that there are no formatting errors such as spaces.
Communication interruption: Check the contact between the lead kit and the instrument terminal, and confirm whether the on-site circuit load resistance meets the HART communication requirements (usually at least 250 ohms).
2. Storage and warranty precautions
In order to protect the rights and interests of the equipment during the warranty period, the equipment must be stored in a clean and dry environment before on-site installation. Regularly inspect the appearance and battery status of the equipment on a daily basis. If the equipment experiences a malfunction within the warranty scope, corresponding supporting documents must be provided, including process operation records, alarm logs, and storage, installation, operation, and maintenance records related to the faulty unit at the time of the malfunction. Properly keeping these records is key to quickly obtaining ABB's global after-sales service support.
