Introduction: The invisible guardian of temperature measurement for medium voltage switchgear
During the long-term operation of medium voltage (MV) switchgear, loose screws or surface oxidation at busbar connections, circuit breaker contacts, and other parts can significantly increase contact resistance. According to Joule's law, this will directly lead to the conversion of electrical energy into thermal energy, which can cause serious accidents such as equipment overheating or even burning out. Faced with this pain point, traditional inspection methods often have lag, while the ABB SensyCal FCU400-IR contactless temperature monitoring system provides a continuous, real-time, and highly reliable online solution.
This system uses infrared temperature measurement technology to perform non-contact monitoring of live parts, and can simultaneously monitor up to 12 hot spot locations. For on-site engineers in the "search for solutions" stage, mastering the hardware installation logic, electrical wiring specifications, and deep troubleshooting techniques based on error codes of the system are key to ensuring the safe and stable operation of the switchgear. This article will provide a detailed professional practical guide based on on-site application scenarios.
Hardware installation and optical path calibration: ensuring the accuracy of temperature measurement
The FCU400-IR system consists of a measurement computer, up to 12 infrared sensors, and an optional Pt100 ambient temperature sensor. The standardization of physical installation directly determines the reliability of subsequent data collection during on-site deployment.
1. Installation of the computer panel for measurement
The measurement computer adopts a disk installation method. On site confirmation is required for the opening size to be 139mm wide and 69mm high. During installation, first remove the cover plates on both sides, push the equipment into the panel from the front, and tighten the fixing screws. Subsequently, push in the EMC protective housing from the rear and ensure that the connection wires for sensors, signals, and power supply pass through the cable sealing joint into the base. Professional tip: To ensure electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), the operating cabinet must be connected to the equipment casing at an equipotential.
2. Installation of infrared sensors and alignment of optical paths
The infrared sensor (model CS) adopts standard M12 x 1 thread. Before installation, the maximum installation distance needs to be determined based on the optical path diagram (optical resolution 15:1). The diameter of the measurement spot must be less than or equal to the size of the measured object, and the measured object must completely fill the entire measurement spot. This is the core prerequisite for avoiding environmental radiation interference and ensuring measurement accuracy.
Surface treatment: If the surface of the tested metal is bare metal, the reflected environmental radiation may cause measurement errors. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that the tested point has been painted or coated with plastic (except for metallic paint).
Environmental restrictions: The upper limit of the environmental temperature for measuring computers is 55 ° C, and the upper limit for sensors is 70 ° C. If the on-site environment is harsh, insulation or ventilation measures need to be taken. At the same time, it is essential to confirm that the equipment is only intended for use in safe areas (non explosion zones).
Electrical wiring and expansion module configuration: building a stable signal link
The electrical connection design of FCU400-IR is highly modular, but safety regulations must be strictly followed during wiring, including power-off operations, prevention of residual voltage in capacitors, and adoption of ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection measures.
1. Basic power supply and I/O wiring
The system is powered by 24V DC (± 5%) with a maximum power consumption of 10VA. A circuit breaker with a rated current not exceeding 16A must be installed on the power lead to completely cut off the power supply (L, N poles) in emergency situations, but the protective conductor cannot be disconnected.
The basic equipment comes with three digital outputs: pre alarm (AB2), main alarm (AB1), and fault output (Err). These outputs are all open collector, passive, and isolated by optocouplers. External power supply must comply with VDE 2188 standard.
2. Slot allocation for expansion modules
The measurement computer motherboard provides 4 expansion slots (Slot 1-4). Attention: Slot 1, 2, and 3 are already occupied by the infrared sensor input, therefore slot 4 can only install one expansion module, and the current output module and communication module are mutually exclusive and cannot be used simultaneously.
Analog output (AX1): Optional 4... 20 mA signal, corresponding to the maximum temperature value.
Communication module (RS485/RS232): used for Modbus communication. When installing this module, the signal wire needs to be soldered to the RxD (red)/TxD (green) solder joints on the motherboard. The communication parameters (baud rate, address) need to be matched with the upper computer system.
