Introduction: Compact AI Computing Engine for the Next Generation Internet of Things
With the increasing integration of edge AI inference and protocol conversion requirements, traditional gateways are no longer capable of handling high load tasks such as video stream analysis and multi-sensor fusion. The MXA-312M Edge AI PC launched by ADLINK is an ultra compact computing platform designed to address this contradiction. This device is equipped with MediaTek Genio 700/500 series processors (MT8390/MT8370), adopting a large and small core architecture (2 x Cortex-A78 performance cores+6 x Cortex-A55 efficiency cores), built-in Mali-G57 MC2 GPU and MediaTek NPU 850, providing hardware acceleration for AI inference. Meanwhile, it retains dual gigabit Ethernet, dual isolated serial ports, and M.2 wireless expansion capabilities, making it an ideal choice for upgrading industrial IoT gateways to AI edge nodes.
Core hardware architecture and performance benchmarks
1.1 Heterogeneous computing units
The core competitiveness of MXA-312M comes from its SoC design:
CPU: 2 Arm Cortex-A78 (up to 2.2GHz) responsible for high load logic operations and AI inference scheduling; Six Cortex-A55 are responsible for backend communication and lightweight tasks, achieving a dynamic balance between power consumption and performance.
NPU: MediaTek's exclusive NPU 850 supports INT8/FP16 accuracy and can reach TOPS level computing power, making it suitable for model deployment in mainstream frameworks such as TensorFlow Lite and ONNX.
GPU: Mali-G57 MC2 supports H.264/H.265 hardware encoding and decoding, paired with dual HDMI outputs (main output 4K60, secondary output) FHD@60 )Meet the multi screen display requirements of digital signage and monitoring centers.
1.2 Memory and Storage Bandwidth
Memory: Onboard LPDDR5 DRAM, default 8GB, configurable up to 16GB, frequency up to 4800MHz, increased bandwidth by about 30% compared to LPDDR4, with significant gains for video stream buffering and AI model loading.
Flash memory: Adopting UFS 3.1 dual channel storage (2-lane), the read and write speed far exceeds traditional eMMC, and the system startup and application loading time are significantly reduced.
1.3 Rich external bus resources
From the functional block diagram, it can be seen that the platform has reserved a large amount of programmable I/O:
4-channel I2C: used for RTC, TPM, EEPROM, and expansion board communication.
Two SPI channels (one of which is connected to NOR Flash for firmware backup), four GPIO channels, and interfaces such as UART and I2S are all connected through FM board connectors, providing hardware foundation for customized AFM (additional function module).
Power supply design and power on process specifications
2.1 DC Input Parameters and Terminal Definitions
The MXA-312M uses 3-pin pluggable power terminals (included), defined as follows:
Pin 1: GND (ground)
Pin 2: CHGND_DCIN (charging ground/DC input ground)
Pin 3: ADAPTER-IN (+12V DC input)
Rated input: 12V DC, minimum current required to reach 3.65A (i.e. adapter power not less than 60W). The manual clearly requires the use of IEC/UL certified LPS (Limited Power Supply) or SELV (ES1) circuits, with a maximum working altitude of 5000 meters.
2.2 Power on steps and safety tips
Confirm that the power is turned off, connect the positive wire to Pin 3, and the negative wire (GND) to Pin 1 (or Pin 2, both are internally connected, but it is recommended to use Pin 1 as the signal ground).
Tighten the terminals and ensure that there are no exposed copper wires.
After connecting the power supply, the front panel Power LED (green) should be constantly on, and the system will automatically start.
If power needs to be cut off, the external power supply should be turned off first, and then a small flathead screwdriver should be used to press the terminal release hole to pull out the cable - it is strictly forbidden to pull the wire directly.
Engineering Warning: The manual emphasizes that "reverse polarity may cause irreversible damage". It is recommended to use a multimeter on site to confirm the output polarity of the adapter before wiring.

Definition and debugging connection of key interface pins
3.1 Serial Communication Port (RS-232/485)
MXA-312M provides two industrial isolated serial ports, both of which are connected to users through 6-pin terminals:
RS-232 COM port (CN3200):
Pin1 & Pin4:GND
Pin2&Pin5: RXD (receive)
Pin3&Pin6: TXD (send)
This port only supports standard RS-232 levels (± 5~± 12V) and is suitable for connecting old PLCs or serial port terminals.
RS-485 COM port (CN3201):
Pin1 & Pin4:GND
Pin2&Pin5: TXD - (Data Negative Terminal)
Pin3&Pin6: TXD+(positive end of data)
This is a two-wire half duplex RS-485, which does not require direction control pins and automatically switches between hardware transmission and reception.
Debugging suggestion: If communication with external devices is required, it is recommended to first use a USB to serial port tool to connect the debugging pins (see below) to verify the system's transceiver function, and then connect to the fieldbus.
