Valmet AIU 16 Analog Input Module – Models 545100-3A and 545100-3B

The Valmet AIU 16 is a high‑density analog input module designed for the Valmet DNA and Metso automation platforms. Available in two complementary versions, 545100-3A and 545100-3B, this module provides 16 universal analog inputs that can accept a wide range of industrial signals, including 4‑20 mA, 0‑20 mA, 0‑10 V, and thermocouple types. It is engineered for reliable process data acquisition in pulp, paper, chemical, and power generation applications.

Signal Types and Input Ranges

Each of the 16 channels is independently configurable via software to measure current (0‑20 mA, 4‑20 mA), voltage (0‑5 V, 0‑10 V, ±10 V), or thermocouple (J, K, T, E, N, R, S). The 545100-3A variant offers a slightly different input impedance and filtering compared to the 545100-3B, but both share the same core 16‑bit analog‑to‑digital converter with oversampling for enhanced noise rejection. The user can select between 50 Hz and 60 Hz digital filtering to eliminate power‑line interference.

Accuracy and Performance

The AIU 16 achieves a basic accuracy of ±0.05 % of full scale at ambient temperature, with a temperature coefficient of ±30 ppm/°C. The update rate per channel is programmable from 10 ms to 1 second, with a typical scanning cycle of 120 ms for all 16 channels. The module includes a self‑calibration routine that compensates for gain and offset drift, ensuring consistent performance over time and temperature variations.


Galvanic Isolation and Protection

All input channels are galvanically isolated from the system bus and from each other with a test voltage of 1500 V AC. This isolation prevents ground loops and protects the module against common‑mode voltages up to 250 V. Each input is equipped with overvoltage clamping (up to 30 V DC) and reverse‑polarity protection, making the module robust against wiring errors. The 545100-3B adds an enhanced transient suppression circuit for use in high‑surge environments.

Communication and Data Interface

The module communicates with the host controller via the Valmet proprietary backplane bus, supporting cyclic and acyclic data exchange. It provides a 16‑bit raw ADC value for each channel, which can be scaled to engineering units in the controller. An additional status byte per channel indicates overrange, underrange, open‑circuit, or short‑circuit conditions. The AIU 16 also supports a diagnostic data record that includes internal temperature, supply voltage, and communication error counters.


Hardware Design and Mounting

The AIU 16 is a 6U x 4HP Eurocard (233 mm x 20 mm) designed for installation in standard Valmet subracks. The front panel features 16 green LEDs that indicate channel activity and a red fault LED for module health. Field wiring is terminated via a 50‑pin female connector that mates with a pre‑wired cable harness or a screw‑terminal adapter. The module draws 400 mA from the 5 V rail and 60 mA from the 24 V rail (excluding loop power).

Environmental Specifications

Operating temperature range is 0 °C to +55 °C, with storage from ‑40 °C to +85 °C. Humidity tolerance is 10‑90 % non‑condensing. The module is conformal coated for resistance to dust and chemical vapors, and it meets EN 61326‑1 class A emission and immunity standards. MTBF is calculated at 800,000 hours at 40 °C.

Installation and Commissioning

Install the module into any available slot in the rack, ensuring that the backplane connectors are clean and aligned. Connect the field wiring according to the channel assignment, using twisted‑pair shielded cables for current loops to minimize noise. Configure each channel using the Valmet Engineering Tool, selecting the appropriate signal type, range, and filtering parameters. Perform a loop test with a precision calibrator to verify accuracy and scaling before commissioning.


Typical Applications

The AIU 16 is widely used in boiler control to monitor feedwater flow, drum level, and flue gas oxygen; in pulp mills for consistency, pH, and temperature; and in chemical reactors for pressure and level measurement. Its high channel count reduces the number of modules needed, saving rack space and simplifying system architecture.

Maintenance and Diagnostics

Routine maintenance includes periodic cleaning of the front panel and inspection of connector pins for corrosion. The module logs open‑circuit and out‑of‑range events, which can be retrieved through the diagnostic interface. Firmware updates are performed over the backplane without removing the module. If a fault is suspected, the status LEDs and event log provide quick troubleshooting clues.

Differences Between Versions 545100-3A and 545100-3B

While both models share the same functional specification, the 545100-3B introduces improved EMI filtering on the input lines and a slightly higher input impedance for voltage modes. The 545100-3A remains fully compatible and is still supported in legacy systems. Both versions are interchangeable in most racks, provided the firmware revision supports them. For new installations, the 545100-3B is recommended due to its enhanced noise immunity.
