Neles Automation A413278 Control Module – Extended I/O Platform

The Neles Automation A413278 is a versatile control module designed for distributed process automation within the Valmet DNA ecosystem. This base unit provides a powerful processing core and a flexible expansion interface that supports a variety of companion boards, including the AOR4C (analog output), BOR86 (digital output), BIR82 (digital input), and the CPR1 (communication processor) module. Together, these components form a highly configurable controller suitable for complex loop control and sequencing tasks.

Base Module Architecture

The A413278 core is built around a 32‑bit microcontroller with a real‑time operating system, featuring 8 MB of flash memory and 4 MB of RAM. It includes a dedicated hardware watchdog, a real‑time clock with battery backup, and a temperature‑compensated crystal oscillator for precise timing. The base module provides two Ethernet 10/100 ports, one RS‑232 service port, and a CAN‑bus interface for local I/O expansion. The front panel hosts a graphical LCD that displays module status, error codes, and network parameters.

Companion Board – AOR4C (Analog Output)

The AOR4C is a 4‑channel analog output board that attaches to the A413278 expansion connector. Each channel is independently configurable for 4‑20 mA or 0‑10 V output, with 16‑bit resolution and an accuracy of ±0.05 %. The outputs are galvanically isolated from the system bus and include short‑circuit protection and open‑loop detection. Typical applications include driving control valves, I/P transducers, and frequency inverter setpoints.

Companion Board – BOR86 (Digital Output)

The BOR86 provides 16 digital output channels rated at 24 V DC / 0.5 A per channel, with a total current limit of 4 A per common. Each output is protected against overcurrent, overtemperature, and inductive kickback (with integrated free‑wheeling diodes). Output status is indicated by individual green LEDs on the board. The BOR86 is commonly used for solenoid valves, motor contactors, and alarm annunciators.

Companion Board – BIR82 (Digital Input)

The BIR82 offers 16 digital input channels for 24 V DC signals, with a typical input current of 5 mA. The threshold for logic high is 11 V, and low is 5 V. Each input features a software‑selectable debounce filter (0.5, 1, or 3 ms) and includes open‑wire detection for normally closed sensors. The inputs are opto‑isolated and provide a common return for groups of 8 channels.

Communication Unit – CPR1

The CPR1 is an optional communication coprocessor that adds advanced networking capabilities to the A413278. It provides a second independent Ethernet port (for security segregation), a PROFIBUS‑DP master interface, and an RS‑485 port for Modbus RTU. The CPR1 offloads protocol processing from the main CPU, improving overall system response time. It includes its own 16‑bit processor and 1 MB of dedicated buffer memory.

System Integration and Power Supply

The A413278 and its expansion boards are powered by a single 24 V DC input (18‑32 V) with reverse‑polarity protection. The total power consumption for a fully populated system is approximately 25 W. All modules are interconnected via a high‑speed parallel bus on the backplane, allowing deterministic data exchange with cycle times as low as 10 ms. The system supports hot‑swapping of companion boards (except the base CPU) for maintenance without shutdown.

Environmental and Mechanical Specifications

The base module is a 6U Eurocard (233 mm x 160 mm) with a 96‑pin DIN connector. Companion boards (AOR4C, BOR86, BIR82, CPR1) are half‑size or full‑size add‑ons that mount directly onto the base card. Operating temperature range is 0 °C to +55 °C; storage from ‑40 °C to +85 °C. Humidity tolerance is 10‑90 % non‑condensing. The assembly is conformal coated for resistance to dust and mild chemical fumes. CE and UL certifications are standard.

Installation and Configuration

Install the A413278 base module into the designated slot in the Valmet subrack. Attach the desired companion boards (AOR4C, BOR86, etc.) to the expansion headers using the provided standoffs and screws. Connect the power and network cables. Configuration is performed via the Valmet Engineering Tool, which automatically detects the attached boards and presents a unified I/O mapping interface. Download the control application and verify the I/O by forcing outputs and reading inputs.

Typical Applications

This modular control platform is used in batch reactors (with AOR4C for flow control, BOR86 for valve sequencing), paper machine winder controls, and compressor control stations. The CPR1 is particularly valuable in systems that require simultaneous communication with multiple fieldbus networks.

Maintenance and Diagnostics

The LCD on the base module provides real‑time diagnostic codes. Each companion board has its own set of status LEDs. Routine inspection includes checking for proper seating of the expansion boards and cleaning of ventilation slots. Firmware updates for the base CPU and CPR1 are available over Ethernet. Spare companion boards can be swapped in without reprogramming the base module.

Conclusion

The Neles Automation A413278 control module, together with the AOR4C, BOR86, BIR82, and CPR1 boards, offers a scalable, high‑performance solution for demanding control applications. Its modular design allows engineers to tailor the I/O mix precisely to the process requirements, ensuring efficient and reliable automation.
