Allen Bradley Bulletin 1503VC IntelliVAC is a modular control unit used to control Bulletin 1502 medium voltage vacuum contactors. It is commonly found in 1500/1900 CENTERLINE medium voltage motor control centers and can also be installed independently as an OEM component. It supports 400 A and 800 A contactors, which can control both electrically held vacuum contactors and mechanically locked vacuum contactors. Series E is the current hardware version, and the main changes include: removing the mini DIN firmware update port and replacing it with IntelliVAC Plus or IntelliVAC MC supplementary board updates; Redesign the input circuit to reduce thermal output and decrease sensitivity to leakage current; At the same time, retain the control interface and installation method of the old series. When encountering problems such as "contactor not closing", "immediate release after closing", "misoperation during operation", "mechanical lock not opening", "incorrect logic of status relay after module replacement" on site, the fault domain is first divided into four categories: version and configuration, control power and command, contactor body and auxiliary feedback, TDUV/capacitor and external circuit, and then checked in order. Usually, it is faster than directly replacing the parts.
Version boundaries and replacement prerequisites
IntelliVAC has gone through five series: A, B, C, D, and E. Series A is divided into two versions: electric holding and mechanical locking; Merge Series B into a single version; Series C is a feature update version of B; Series D mainly enhances the definition and handling of faults and warnings; Series E will replace hardware to support IntelliVAC Plus and IntelliVAC MC, and improve input circuits. Series A, B, C, and D have all been discontinued, and Series C, D, or E are usually used to replace the old series during on-site replacement. Series C, D, and E can all replace Series A or B, but the action logic of the module status relay and contactor status relay after replacement may be different from the old version. The control circuit must be adjusted according to the new version status table, and cannot be powered on just by plugging it in.
Before replacement, five things need to be confirmed: the original module series letter (located next to the large label on the right side of the casing and part number), the rated current of the contactor is 400 A or 800 A, whether the contactor is electrically holding or mechanically locked, whether the control power supply is AC or DC, and whether external capacitors and EMI filters are used. The firmware of Series E is version 4.004 or later and is not compatible with other series; Series C uses 2.003 application firmware, while Series D uses 3.001 or 3.002. If replacing old modules with Series E, do not attempt to use the old firmware update method. Firmware updates should be completed through IntelliVAC Plus or IntelliVAC MC.
When replacing spare parts, Series E corresponds to 1503VC-BMC5; Series C/D corresponds to 1503VC-BMC4. The internal insurance is 6.3 A, 250 V, and the connector spare parts include a 2-pole power supply, a 4-pole status output, and a 12 pole coil/I/O connector. Please provide the complete part number and serial number when ordering, do not just write "1503VC" to avoid series or configuration mismatch.
Installation, grounding, and power boundary
The module is fixed with two screws and is usually located inside the low-voltage control panel of the medium voltage control cabinet. During OEM installation, at least 38.1 mm of free space should be left above and below the module, with a minimum spacing of 6.4 mm between adjacent modules to ensure ventilation. The installation surface should be clean and free of metal shavings. When handling modules, follow ESD protection and do not touch the circuit board and conductors directly with your hands.
Grounding is a mandatory requirement. The grounding stud of Series E is located at the bottom of the module housing and must be connected to the common grounding PE of the control cabinet. Poor grounding may not only damage equipment, but also cause personal injury. Control the power supply by connecting the bottom L1, L2/N: L1 is the live wire or positive pole, L2/N is the neutral wire, return wire or negative pole. The main input supports 110-240 V AC, 47-63 Hz, or 110-250 V DC, with a tolerance of+10/-15% deviation. The control command input supports AC 70-240 V and DC 70-250 V, with a minimum pull in current of approximately 2.5 mA AC and 1.2 mA DC, and a maximum turn off leakage current of approximately 1.9 mA AC and 900 μ A DC. When driving directly with PLC transistors or bidirectional thyristors on site, it is necessary to calculate the shutdown leakage current and add intermediate relays or load resistors if necessary to avoid command "virtual existence" caused by leakage current.
The status relay is a normally open contact, AC 250 V/5 A resistive, 2 A inductive PF=0.4; DC 30 V/5 A resistive, 2 A inductive L/R=7 ms. The module status relay is 13/14, and the contactor status relay is 15/16. Note that the status relay reflects the module logic, which does not mean that the main contact of the contactor has been completely closed. The feedback of the auxiliary contact still needs to be checked separately.
