UniOP CP01R-04, CP05R-04, and CP01F-02 Compact Low Cost HMI Devices

In the field of industrial automation, the human-machine interface serves as a bridge between operators and control systems, and its performance directly affects production efficiency and operational experience. The UniOP CP series compact HMI devices, with their small size, rich functions, and high cost-effectiveness, have become an ideal choice for many scenarios such as mechanical equipment, process control, and building automation. This series includes three models: CP01R-04, CP05R-04, and CP01F-02, all based on a 20 character display width, providing 2-line or 4-line information display capabilities, and equipped with programmable function keys and LED indicator lights, supporting multiple communication extensions, fully meeting the interaction needs of different industrial environments.


Product Series Overview

The CP series HMI panel is positioned as a compact and low-cost product, but with exceptionally rich functions. They support powerful features common to UniOP operator panels, including intuitive programming software, communication drivers for over 130 industrial devices, optional fieldbus modules, data display and recipe storage, keyboard macro editing, alarm management, and eight level password protection.

2.1 Model Classification and Display Types

CP01F-02: Equipped with a vacuum fluorescent display (VFD), displaying 2 lines x 20 characters. VFD has the advantages of high brightness, high contrast, and wide viewing angle, making it suitable for situations with low light or requiring high visibility.

CP01R-04: Adopting monochrome LCD, displaying 4 rows x 20 characters, backlit with LED, with a lifespan of up to 100000 hours. The LCD solution has low power consumption and is suitable for applications that are sensitive to power consumption or require a longer lifespan.

CP05R-04: Also using monochrome LCD, displaying 4 rows x 20 characters, LED backlight, with a lifespan of 100000 hours. Compared with CP01R-04, CP05R-04 has been streamlined in terms of functionality, such as not supporting dual drive capability and recipe storage, but still retains the core alarm and event list functions.


Detailed explanation of display technology

3.1 Comparison between LCD and VFD

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display): CP01R-04 and CP05R-04 are equipped with a transmissive monochrome LCD, relying on LED backlight. Its character height is 5mm and supports software contrast adjustment (only CP05R-04). LCD can still be read in strong ambient light and has extremely low power consumption, making it suitable for devices powered by batteries or requiring heat dissipation.

VFD (Vacuum Fluorescent Display): CP01F-02 adopts VFD technology, self luminous, high brightness, and the color is usually blue-green or amber, which is very eye-catching in dark environments. VFD has fast response speed and no viewing angle limitation, but its power consumption is relatively high and its lifespan is limited by the aging of fluorescent materials (although it can still reach tens of thousands of hours).

3.2 User defined Characters

CP01R-04 and CP05R-04 support up to 8 user-defined characters, which can be used to display special symbols or simple graphics, enhancing the flexibility of information expression. Due to the use of VFD, CP01F-02 does not support custom characters, but its standard character set is sufficient to meet most text display needs.

Human Computer Interaction Design

4.1 Buttons and LED indicator lights

The CP series front panel is equipped with a variety of buttons and indicator lights, providing users with intuitive operation and status feedback.

Function keys: 5 user programmable function keys (F1~F5), each equipped with a sliding tab for easy labeling of the current function. Through UniOP Designer software, these buttons can be configured for various operations such as page switching, data writing, alarm confirmation, etc.

System keys: There are a total of 19 system keys, including numeric keys, directional keys, confirmation keys, etc., used for data input and menu navigation. The layout of the system keys has been optimized for easy one handed operation.

User LED: 5 programmable LED indicator lights, which may be green or red in color (depending on the model), used to display device status, alarms, or custom signals. Each LED can be configured with software to turn on/off or flash logic.

System LED: 1 dedicated green LED (marked as DL) used to indicate the operating status of the device. Its meaning is as follows:

OFF: No buttons pressed and no errors.

Flashing: Communication error or low battery level.

ON: Provides visual feedback or indicates hardware failure when any button is pressed.

4.2 Label strips and attachments

All function keys support sliding label strips, allowing users to print custom icon labels and quickly identify key functions. Laser printable blank label strips are provided as attachments for easy on-site production.


Memory and Storage

The CP series HMI is equipped with non-volatile memory for storing project files, recipe data, and event logs.

User memory: The standard configuration is 512 KB, which can be expanded to 512 KB (i.e. a total memory of 1 MB). Memory is used to store images, variable definitions, text messages, etc.

Recipe Memory: CP01R-04 and CP01F-02 reserve 16 KB of dedicated recipe storage space, supporting configuration and transmission of up to 255 parameter sets. CP05R-04 does not support formula function.

Event List: CP01R-04 and CP01F-02 support 256 historical event records, while CP05R-04 does not provide this feature.


Communication capability

6.1 Built in communication interface

PLC port: Provides multiple physical layer interfaces including RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, and 20mA current loop, with communication rates configurable from 9600 to 38400 bps (CP01 series has the highest speed of 38400 bps, CP05 series has a fixed speed of 9600 bps). This port can directly connect various brands of PLCs or smart devices.

PC/Printer Port: The CP01 series is equipped with a separate PC/printer port for project downloads or connecting to a serial printer. The CP05 series does not have this port.

Auxiliary port: All models provide an auxiliary port for connecting optional functional modules (such as fieldbus or Ethernet modules). This port supports high-speed communication, enabling HMI to access industrial networks.

6.2 Dual Drive Capability

CP01R-04 and CP01F-02 support "dual drive" communication, which means that one panel can communicate with devices of two different protocols simultaneously (such as connecting two PLCs at the same time), achieving centralized display and control of data. CP05R-04 does not have this capability.

6.3 Optional fieldbus module

Through auxiliary ports, the CP series can install TCM/SCM series modules, supporting industrial networks such as Profibus DP, DeviceNet, CANopen, Interbus, and Ethernet. This enables seamless integration of HMI into existing control systems, serving as distributed I/O or master/slave devices.

Software and Programming

All CP series panels are developed using UniOP Designer for Windows programming software. This software provides the following core functions:

Intuitive graphical interface design: Create display pages by dragging and dropping, placing elements such as text, values, bar charts, etc.

Multi language support: Multiple language versions can be created in one project, and languages can be switched at runtime through buttons or variables to meet the needs of global devices.

Keyboard Macro Editor: allows users to write macro instructions for function keys, enabling complex local operation sequences and reducing the burden of PLC programming.

Communication driver library: Built in communication driver programs for over 130 industrial equipment, covering mainstream PLCs, frequency converters, instruments, etc., ensuring fast connection.


Functional characteristics

8.1 Data Display

The CP series supports multiple data formats for display, including integers, floating-point numbers, dates, times, text strings, and bar charts. By linearly scaling the variables, the raw data can be converted into engineering units for display.

8.2 Alarm Management

Number of alarms: CP01R-04 and CP01F-02 support up to 1024 alarm definitions, while CP05R-04 supports 256.

Alarm List: It can display current active alarms in real-time and provide historical alarm event records (up to 256).

Alarm confirmation: The operator can confirm the alarm by pressing the button, and the system records the confirmation time and operator information (which needs to be coordinated with the printer output).

8.3 Formula Storage

The recipe function allows users to predefine multiple sets of parameters and download the entire set of data to the PLC or upload it from the PLC to the HMI through simple operations. The CP01 series supports 16 KB recipe memory and is suitable for scenarios that require frequent switching of production parameters.

8.4 Security mechanism

The eight level password protection mechanism can restrict access to specific pages, variables, or functions to prevent unauthorized operations. Password levels can be associated with user permissions to ensure system security.

8.5 UniNet Network

CP01R-04 and CP01F-02 support UniNet network and can serve as client/server nodes for data exchange with other UniOP panels or upper computers. CP05R-04 only supports client mode and can read data from other devices in the network.


Electrical and Environmental Specifications

Protection level: The front panel meets the IP65 standard, is dustproof and water-resistant, and suitable for industrial installation on site.

Working temperature: Standard models range from 0 to 50 ° C, with optional extended temperature versions (-20 to 70 ° C) to meet harsh environmental requirements.

Power supply: 24 VDC power supply, power consumption varies slightly depending on the model, but all are below 10W.

Backlight lifespan: The LED backlight of LCD models has a lifespan of up to 100000 hours and requires almost no maintenance.


Physical installation and dimensions

The CP series adopts a panel installation method, with a compact front panel size, suitable for control cabinets with limited space. The detailed installation hole size can refer to the product manual, but all models are designed with uniform standard holes for easy replacement and upgrading.


Attachments and extensions

Programming cable: CA114 cable can be used for CP01 series programming; When connecting the CP05 series, a 15 pin female to female adapter is required.

Functional modules: TCM/SCM series modules (such as Profibus DP slave and Ethernet modules) can be plugged into auxiliary ports to expand network communication capabilities.

Backup battery: The lithium battery inside the main module is used to maintain real-time clock and SRAM data, and users can replace it themselves.

The CP series HMI is widely used in the following scenarios:

Mechanical equipment control: such as packaging machines, injection molding machines, machine tools, etc., providing parameter settings, status monitoring, and fault diagnosis.
