In industrial automation sites, human-machine interface (HMI) is the core bridge between operators and control systems. Eaton's XV-102-L series touch screens are widely used in the field of machine and system manufacturing due to their compact design, rich communication interfaces, and wide temperature operating range. However, proper installation, standardized electrical connections, and troubleshooting of the system are key to ensuring long-term stable operation of the equipment. This article is based on the official technical information of the XV-102 series hardware, providing on-site engineers with a complete operation guide from unboxing to troubleshooting.
Safety and selection preparation before installation
Before installing XV-102, it is necessary to first confirm that the equipment meets the expected usage environment and safety requirements. This series of touch screens is only allowed to be used in non hazardous areas (or ATEX Zone 22) and is strictly prohibited from being used for personal safety related protective functions.
1.1 Personnel Qualifications and Safety Standards
Installation, wiring, and maintenance work must be carried out by qualified electrical professionals. Before operation, the power supply of the equipment must be disconnected and measures must be taken to prevent reconnection (such as padlocks, markings). At the same time, operators should release body static electricity by touching grounded metal objects to avoid damaging the static sensitive components inside the equipment.
1.2 Installation location and environmental conditions
XV-102 adopts a plastic shell, with a front panel protection level of IP65/NEMA 4X (indoor use only) and a back panel protection level of IP20. Attention should be paid during installation:
Environmental temperature: Operating temperature from 0 ℃ to 50 ℃ (32 ° F to 122 ° F); Storage/transportation temperature -20 ℃ to+60 ℃.
Humidity: Relative humidity of 10% to 95%, no condensation.
Altitude: up to 2000 meters.
Avoid UV rays: Plastic shells will become brittle when exposed to direct sunlight for a long time, so sunshades should be installed or light sources should be avoided.
Heat dissipation: The device adopts natural convection passive heat dissipation, and a ventilation gap of at least 30mm should be reserved around it, without blocking the air vents.
Mechanical installation: drilling and fixing
XV-102 supports horizontal or vertical installation, but the SD card slot is located on the side. If the card slot is facing downwards during vertical installation, it may cause the card to slide out. This direction should be avoided.
2.1 Installation hole size
According to different screen sizes, the opening sizes are as follows (in millimeters, with a tolerance of ± 1):
3.5 "Model: Width 123 x Height 87
5.7 "Model: Width 157 x Height 117
7.0 "Model: Width 197 x Height 122
The installation panel thickness requirement is 2mm~5mm (0.08 "~0.2"), flatness ≤ 0.5mm, and roughness Rz ≤ 120. If the panel strength is insufficient, reinforcement ribs must be added, otherwise the IP65 sealing effect cannot be guaranteed.
2.2 Fixed method
Use the randomly attached snap fastener to secure the screw (internal hexagon M4 × 25, galvanized). Fixed steps:
Insert the device into the opening from the front.
Hook the buckle into the opening on the side of the shell and rotate the screw to make it contact the inner wall of the panel.
Install all buckles in diagonal order (4 for 3.5 inches, 6 for 5.7 inches, and 8 for 7.0 inches).
Tighten the screws alternately with a torque of ≤ 0.1 Nm (0.86 lb in) to ensure even compression of the sealing gasket.
Attention: If the screw torque is too high, it will damage the housing, and if it is too low, it will not meet IP65. After installation, check if the sealing gasket fits snugly around.

Electrical Connection: Power and Grounding
3.1 Power Requirements
XV-102 requires 24 VDC SELV/PELV safety extra low voltage power supply. The power parameters are as follows:
Effective voltage range: 19.2 V~30.0 V (-20%/+25%)
Absolute limit (including ripple): 18.0 V~31.2 V
When powered by batteries: 18.0 V~31.2 V (-25%/+30%), allowing 35 V to last<100 ms
Capable of withstanding voltage drops of ≤ 10 ms (compliant with IEC 61131-2)
power waste:
3.5 "basic model: maximum 5 W; increases 2.5 W when connecting USB devices
5.7 "/7.0" basic model: maximum 7 W; increases 2.5 W when connecting USB devices
Wiring terminal: The accompanying plug-in terminal model is MSTB 2.5-3-ST-5.08, and the wiring requirements are:
Copper wire, temperature resistant to 60 ℃/70 ℃
Wire diameter: 0.75 mm ²~2.5 mm ² (AWG18~AWG12)
Stripping length: 7 mm
Terminal screw torque: 0.6~0.8 Nm (5~7 lb in)
Polarity: The terminal identification "+" is connected to 24V, and "-" is connected to 0V. The device has built-in anti reverse protection, but long-term reverse connection may still cause damage and should be avoided.
3.2 Functional Grounding
The power supply part of the device is not isolated, and the functional grounding (FE) is only connected to the connector housing, not 0V. The plastic housing itself is not charged. To meet EMC requirements, it is recommended to connect the FE terminal to the central grounding point through a short and low impedance wire. In ship applications, additional power filters (such as Eaton XT-FIL-1 or XT-FIL-2) must be used to meet EMC Class B.
