HIMax X-FAN system fan

Overview of HIMax X-FAN System Fans

The HIMax X-FAN system fan is an essential component of the HIMax programmable electronic system and is crucial for the stable operation of the system. The fan must be installed directly above the base plate to ensure forced convection cooling for modules with ventilation openings at both the bottom and top. Hot air is discharged upwards through a fan, so sufficient space must be ensured during installation to achieve good heat dissipation.

The X-FAN series offers multiple models to accommodate HIMax baseboards of different sizes and diverse environmental requirements. All system fans have redundant power supply capability and real-time monitoring function, continuously reporting their operating status through the LED indicator lights and fault relays on the front panel. The reliability of the HIMax system is not only reflected in its core controller, but also in the excellent design of key auxiliary components such as the X-FAN system fan.

Product Model and Selection Guide

The X-FAN series has been subdivided based on the base plate, installation method, and performance indicators it is compatible with. The correct selection is the first step in ensuring the long-term stable operation of the HIMax system in the expected environment.

2.1 Model and Base Plate Matching

Different HIMax baseboards require specific models of system fans:

System fan model, installation method, fan quantity, applicable base plate

X-FAN 10 01/03 Backboard Installation 2 X-BASE PLATE 10 01

X-FAN 15 01/03 Backboard Installation 3 X-BASE PLAY 15 01

X-FAN 15 02/04 19 inch rack 3 X-BASE PLAY 15 02

X-FAN 18 01/03 Backboard Installation 4 X-BASE PLATE 18 01

2.2 Selection of Air Volume and Noise Level

Fans of the same size are available in two performance versions, and users can weigh their requirements for noise and heat dissipation based on the site:

High volume models (01/02 series): such as X-FAN 10 01, 15 01, 15 02, 18 01. These fans have higher sound pressure levels (e.g. X-FAN 18 01 is approximately 67 dB (A)) and higher air flow rates (e.g. X-FAN 18 01 is 480-880 m ³/h). HIMA recommends using high air volume models in the following situations:

When the expected ambient temperature is high.

When maintenance cannot be carried out immediately in an unmanned environment.

Low noise models (03/04 series): such as X-FAN 10 03, 15 03, 15 04, 18 03. The sound pressure level of these fans is significantly reduced (for example, X-FAN 18 03 is about 49 dB (A)), and the air flow is moderate. HIMA recommends using low-noise models in the following situations:

When the ambient temperature is below 40 ° C.

In noise sensitive environments, such as manned switch rooms.

Design and functional characteristics

3.1 Mechanical Structure

The X-FAN system fan features a sturdy aluminum casing. The front panel design is simple, including LEDs for indicating operating status and a flip cover for easy operation. This cover plate needs to be opened during installation to facilitate the insertion or removal of modules. The fan offers two installation methods:

Backboard installation: Use pear shaped holes and grooves on both sides of the fan to install the flange, and fix it on the backboard (such as the mounting plate) with M6 bolts.

19 inch rack installation: Suitable for X-FAN 15 02 and 15 04, fixed to the 19 inch rack using the fastener kit (M 2212) provided by HIMA through the four long holes on the mounting flanges on both sides.

3.2 Redundant power supply design

X-FAN fans support redundant power inputs (L1+/L1- and L2+/L2-), which is a key design to improve overall system availability. Even if one power supply fails, the other power supply can immediately take over to ensure the continuous operation of the fan and maintain the normal heat dissipation of the HIMax system.

Key points for power connection:

A 24 VDC power supply that meets SELV or PELV requirements must be used.

When connecting, it is necessary to ensure the correct polarity. The reverse polarity protection diode inside the fan can prevent damage caused by reverse connection.

Single power supply operation: If only one power supply (such as L1+) is used, it needs to be connected to terminals 1 and 2, and a jumper should be connected between terminals 5 and 3 at the same time. This can prevent the fan monitoring system from falsely reporting L2 power loss.

3.3 Comprehensive Fan Monitoring

The X-FAN system fan has built-in intelligent monitoring function to continuously verify its own operating status. Once a fault is detected, the fault relay will immediately activate and the red Error LED on the front panel will light up.

The monitoring system can detect the following faults:

One of the two input voltages has failed.

One or more fans are blocked.

The fan speed is too low.

The input voltage is too low.

The circuit connecting to one or more fans is interrupted.

Fault relay:

Relay contacts (normally closed NC, common C, normally open NO) can be used to connect external sound and light alarms, with a maximum switch current of up to 4 A. In normal operation, the relay coil is energized, the normally open contacts close, and the normally closed contacts open. Once a fault occurs, the relay loses power, the contact state reverses, and a clear fault signal is emitted.

Installation and Startup

4.1 Installation location and environment

The system fan must be installed directly above the HIMax base plate.

To ensure good airflow circulation, sufficient space should be reserved above and below the fan. For high air volume models with backplate installation, 1U space needs to be reserved above and below; For low-noise models, 2U of space needs to be reserved.

The installation location must meet environmental requirements: temperature from 0 to 60 ° C, humidity ≤ 95% (no condensation), altitude<2000 m.

4.2 Power Connection

Peel off the insulation layer at the end of the connecting cable, with a length of 6mm.

According to the terminal definition table, insert the cable into terminals 1 to 4 of the connector plug.

Use a 0.4 x 2.5 mm slot screwdriver to tighten the terminals with a torque of 0.2-0.25 Nm.

If using a single power supply, be sure to install a jumper between terminals 5 and 3.

Diagnosis and maintenance

5.1 LED Diagnosis

Green Run LED: It lights up when there is sufficient power supply.

Red Error LED: It lights up when faults such as low voltage, blocked fan, or low speed are detected.

5.2 Fault Relay

By monitoring the contact status of the relay, the control system can remotely determine the health status of the fan.

5.3 Maintenance and Replacement

The X-FAN system fan contains moving parts and is a consumable with a lifespan. HIMA recommends regularly replacing fans and sending them back to HIMA for maintenance based on the operating environment temperature

Under normal operating temperature (<40 ° C): Replace every 6 years.

At higher operating temperatures (>40 ° C): replace every 3 years.

When replacing, the same model or a replacement model approved by HIMA must be used. Operators need to have knowledge of ESD protection.
