In the field of industrial visual inspection, the OMRON ZFV series intelligent sensors provide on-site engineers with a "what you see is what you get" inspection experience with their built-in LCD monitor, intuitive icon menu, and rich inspection tools. However, beginners often encounter challenges in installation, debugging, and troubleshooting when faced with different models (single function/standard), different detection modes (pattern search, brightness, area, width, position, counting, characters), and multiple trigger and output configurations. This article is based on the technical data of ZFV series Ver 2.0, providing a complete engineering practical guide from hardware installation, basic configuration, teaching execution, threshold adjustment to common problem diagnosis.
System Overview and Selection Points
The ZFV intelligent sensor adopts a split architecture of "sensor head+amplifier unit", with the core advantage being that the amplifier unit is equipped with a 1.8-inch color LCD and an icon style menu, allowing users to confirm images and set parameters in real time without connecting to a computer.
1.1 Sensor head selection
Model type setting distance detection range (H × V)
ZFV-SR10 narrow field of view 34~49mm 5 × 4.6mm~9 × 8.3mm
ZFV-SR50 wide field of view 38~194mm 10 × 9.2mm~50 × 46mm
The sensor head is equipped with red LED pulse illumination and a 1/3-inch CCD (partial scanning), with an electronic shutter speed of 1/1000 to 1/4000 seconds. Protection level IP65, suitable for dusty or humid environments. During installation, the detection area and focal position can be confirmed through green guiding light.
1.2 Selection of amplifier units
Characteristics of Model Output Type Testing Items
ZFV-A10 NPN Pattern, Brightness Single Function Type
ZFV-A15 PNP pattern, brightness single function type
ZFV-A20 NPN Pattern, Brightness, Area, Width, Position, Count, Character Standard Type
ZFV-A25 PNP Same as Standard Type
Selection suggestion: Choose the single function type only when detecting for presence or brightness changes; Choose the standard type for size measurement, position offset, counting, or character detection.
1.3 Extended Configuration
Up to 5 amplifier units can be installed side by side: it can simultaneously process multiple areas of one sensor head image (such as four side position detection), or multiple sensor heads can synchronously detect different parts of the workpiece.
Connect data storage unit ZS-DSU: expandable to 128 banks, and record measurement images and values (before and after saving images triggered by NG) for easy traceability of the cause of defects.
Extension cable: Use ZFV-XC3BV2 (3m)/XC8BV2 (8m) ordinary cable or ZFV-XC3BRV2 robot cable (bending resistant). Two extension cables can be docked, with a total length of up to 19m (subject to the total length limit between the controller and camera, refer to the controller manual for actual reference).
Hardware installation and electrical connection
2.1 Installation of amplifier unit
DIN rail installation:
Hook the connector side of the amplifier unit onto the upper edge of the DIN rail.
Press down until the hook on the I/O cable side clicks into place.
When installing side by side, open the connector cover, insert the control connection unit (ZS-XCN), and then slide the amplifier unit to connect the connectors.
Attention: The connector side must be hooked onto the guide rail first, not the I/O cable side, otherwise the installation strength will be insufficient.
Panel installation (using ZS-XPM1/XPM2 panel installation adapter):
The first one uses ZS-XPM1, followed by ZS-XPM2.
Push the amplifier unit forward from the back of the panel, insert the adapter from the front, and secure it with an installation fixture.
2.2 I/O Cable Wiring
The ZVF amplifier unit comes with an I/O cable (approximately 2m), and each lead is defined as follows:
Lead color/function description
Power supply (brown) DC24V ± 10%
GND (blue) 0V
OUTPUT (black) judgment result output (NPC/PNP open collector, 50mA max)
ENABLE (orange) ready to output (ON in RUN mode)
ERROR (white) error output
TEACH (Powder) Teaching Input
TRIG (gray) measurement trigger input
BANK1~3 (purple/red/green) Bank switching input
NPN output type internal circuit: OUTPUT is an NPN open collector, which outputs a low level (≤ 1.2V) when turned on. The load should be connected between OUTPUT and 24V+. PNP output type: When turned on, it outputs a high level (power supply voltage within -1.5V), with the load connected between OUTPUT and 0V.
2.3 Sensor head installation
Determine the installation distance based on the detection range setting distance curve. For example, when ZFV-SR50 requires a detection range of 25mm, the set distance is approximately 95mm.
Rotate the focus adjustment knob to make the green guide light the thinnest (in focus).
For reflective workpieces (such as metal mirrors), tilt the sensor head to avoid direct reflection of mirror light into the receiver.
Be sure to turn off the amplifier power before connecting the sensor head, otherwise it may damage the sensor head.
