B&R X20AO4622 Analog Output Module

The B&R X20AO4622 is a high-precision analog output module within the X20 I/O system, offering four channels configurable for voltage or current signals. With 13-bit digital converter resolution (including sign), this module provides precise analog output capabilities for driving actuators, controlling variable frequency drives, and generating setpoints for process controllers. The X20AO4622 integrates seamlessly into the X20 system architecture and supports hot-swappable installation via X2X Link.

Technical Specifications

The X20AO4622 features four analog output channels with selectable output ranges including ±10 V, 0 to 20 mA, or 4 to 20 mA. The 13-bit converter resolution (including sign) provides 0.025% of full scale resolution for voltage signals and 0.0195% for current signals. Selection between current and voltage signals is accomplished using different connection terminals on the module, allowing convenient configuration changes without module replacement. Each channel is capable of handling either current or voltage signals, and the desired type of output signal must be configured via software using the output channel configuration register. The following output signals can be set: ±10 V voltage signal (default), 0 to 20 mA current signal, or 4 to 20 mA current signal.

Power consumption from the X2X Link bus is 0.01 W, while internal I/O consumption is 1.1 W. The module supports a wide operating temperature range from -25°C to 60°C in horizontal mounting orientation, and -25°C to 50°C in vertical orientation. Storage and transport temperature ranges from -40°C to 85°C. Relative humidity tolerance is 5 to 95% non-condensing for both operation and storage conditions. Minimum cycle time is 250 µs, and minimum I/O update time is 400 µs. The front panel includes LED status indicators for I/O function, operating state, and module diagnostics.

Key Features

  • 4 analog outputs, individually configurable per channel

  • Voltage range: ±10 V

  • Current ranges: 0 to 20 mA or 4 to 20 mA

  • 13-bit digital converter resolution including sign

  • Channel type determined by connection terminals used

  • Configurable output signal per channel via software

  • LED status indicators for I/O function, operating state, and module status

  • Diagnostic capabilities via LED and software

  • CE, UKCA, ATEX Zone 2, cULus, and DNV certifications

Configuration and Software

Using B&R Automation Studio, engineers can assign measurement ranges and output signal types for each channel. The channel type must be configured via the ConfigOutput register, which is a USINT value with bit structure defining the voltage or current mode and measurement range selection. Once a permitted value is received, the module outputs the respective current or voltage. Output values are standardized in registers AnalogOutput01 to AnalogOutput04 as INT data type. The module provides diagnostic information through both LED status indicators and software monitoring. The minimum cycle time defines how far the bus cycle can be reduced without communication errors occurring; very fast cycles decrease idle time available for handling monitoring, diagnostics, and acyclic commands.

Integration with X20 System

The X20AO4622 integrates seamlessly into the B&R X20 I/O system architecture. It requires a bus module such as X20BM11 or X20BM15 and a terminal block such as X20TB12, which are ordered separately. The module has a 12.5 mm pitch (one slot) and supports both horizontal and vertical mounting orientations. It is compatible with all X20 CPUs and fieldbus couplers, including POWERLINK, PROFINET, and EtherCAT systems. The module supports hot-swappable installation within X2X Link networks, allowing replacement without powering down the system.

Applications

Typical applications include controlling variable frequency drives (speed reference), positioning valves via current-to-pressure (I/P) transducers, generating reference signals for analog servo drives, controlling chart recorders, and providing setpoints for process controllers in applications such as flow control, pressure regulation, and temperature setpoint generation. The module is suitable for use in packaging machinery, material handling systems, printing presses, and process automation skids.

Installation and Wiring

The X20AO4622 mounts on a 35 mm DIN rail using standard X20 installation procedures. The module uses a removable terminal block (X20TB12) for field wiring. For voltage output (±10 V), connect the load to the V+ and V- terminals of the channel. For current output (0-20 mA or 4-20 mA), connect the load to the I+ and I- terminals. A 24 V DC external supply is required for the analog circuits; the module uses internal I/O power consumption of 1.1 W. Ensure proper grounding of cable shields for noise-sensitive applications. Use shielded twisted-pair cables for analog output wiring, especially for runs longer than 3 meters. The module's diagnostic LEDs provide visual indication of output status and fault conditions.

Environmental and Compliance

The X20AO4622 is CE, UKCA, UL 61010-2-201, cULus, DNV, ATEX Zone 2 (II 3G Ex nA nC IIA T5 Gc), CCS, ABS, LR, and KC certified. Operating temperature: horizontal mounting -25°C to 60°C; vertical mounting -25°C to 50°C. Storage temperature: -40°C to 85°C. Humidity: 5 to 95% non-condensing. Vibration resistance: 5g (10-55 Hz). Protection rating: IP20. The module is designed for pollution degree 2 environments and must be installed in a control cabinet. The X20AO4622 is available in coated and non-coated versions for additional environmental protection.

Conclusion

The B&R X20AO4622 analog output module provides high-precision analog output capabilities for industrial automation systems. With four configurable channels, 13-bit resolution, and seamless integration into the X20 system, it offers a reliable solution for controlling analog actuators in demanding applications.
