Product positioning and system composition
MICRO PANEL GS-2 is a visualization unit designed for low to medium complexity automation equipment, with touch area functionality that meets the basic requirements of modern human-machine interfaces (HMI). It does not run independently, but must be used in conjunction with SMM system memory modules and communication cards. The communication card is responsible for connecting automation equipment, such as PLC or controller, and its specific protocol and wiring method need to refer to the technical specifications of the corresponding card. The project data is created and loaded into the touch panel using PDT (Panel Design Tool) software.
From the perspective of system architecture, GS-2 is responsible for display and operation, SMM provides operating system and project data storage, and the communication card realizes data exchange with PLC. All three are indispensable. If any of these steps are configured incorrectly, it will result in communication failure, inability to download the project, or system failure to start. Therefore, when troubleshooting GS-2 issues, it is necessary to simultaneously check the display unit SMM、 Communication card, download cable, and PLC side configuration.
Mechanical installation and protection requirements
The external dimensions of GS-2 are 312 × 222 × 82 mm, the front panel opening size is 296 × 196 mm, the installation hole is M5, and the hole spacing is 284 × 194 mm. During installation, a minimum distance of 5 cm must be maintained between the top, bottom, rear, and other components of the equipment to ensure heat dissipation. The cooling trough cannot be obstructed by cables or other objects. The operating temperature specified for the equipment is based on vertical installation, natural air convection, and an altitude not exceeding 2000 meters. To meet the IP65 protection level, a specialized installation kit must be used, which includes a counter frame installed at the rear to ensure the pressure of the sealing ring on the thin panel. Please note that the IP65 installation kit is not included in the standard supply range and needs to be ordered separately.
For the scenario of replacing the old HMI, the opening size and installation hole spacing are the primary verification items. The 296 × 196 mm opening of GS-2 is different from many old panels. If the original opening does not match, the panel may need to be reworked or an adapter plate may need to be added. At the same time, it is necessary to confirm whether the depth inside the control cabinet is sufficient, and whether the power and communication lines can enter from the back.
Electrical connections and operating components
The power supply terminal of GS-2 is a 3-pin plug-in terminal labeled with 24VDC, PE, 0V. The power supply range is+20.4 to+28.8 VDC effective value; If there is ripple, the absolute value range is+18.5 to+30.2 V. The typical current consumption is 0.9 A, and the maximum starting current is 0.6 A for 2 seconds. There is a communication card slot on the back of the device, which can accommodate communication cards such as MPB-TP. The ROG PORT is a 9-pin D-Sub female connector used for project data download and printer connection. There are also+12V and+5V system voltage monitoring LEDs on the panel, as well as a DOWNLOAD button.
The RS232 interface of the ROG PORT is isolated and ungrounded, with a maximum connection length of 20 meters. The pin definitions are: 2 TxD, 3 RxD, 4 DSR, 5 Gnd, 6 DTR, 9+5V, and the casing is shielded. Pin 9 can only be used for additional hardware power supply of the original GS-2 and cannot be used for other products. Both ends of the download cable are D-Sub miniature female heads, and pins 2 to 6 must be connected in a 1:1 ratio. If using a printer, the GS-2 needs to be equipped with SMM-2, and the printer interface is located at the PROG PORT. The baud rate can be selected from 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, and the maximum connection length is 20 meters.
SMM system memory module
The SMM system memory module is installed at the rear of GS-2 and is an independent unit. It is fixed with two rolling screws and can be disassembled without tools. SMM includes an operating system EPROM and project data Flash. There are two versions of SMM: SMM-1 is the standard version with a project data memory of 128 kB; SMM-2 is the enhanced version with a project data memory of 512 kB, and supports multilingual operations, additional image and text memory, as well as data recording through a ROG PORT connected printer.
SMM is equipped with a WRITE ENABLE switch. During normal operation, the switch must be in the OFF position. Only switch to ON when downloading project data. Insertion and removal of SMM must be done when the device is powered off, otherwise it may damage SMM or GS-2. During installation, it is necessary to ensure that the SMM is firmly fixed and that the contacts of the SMM or GS-2 are not touched by hands or conductive objects to prevent damage from electrostatic discharge.
