The OMRON C200HG-CPU63-E is a high-performance CPU unit belonging to the renowned C200H series of programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Designed for mid-to-large scale industrial automation systems, this processor module delivers advanced control capabilities, fast instruction execution, and flexible expansion options. It serves as the core of a modular PLC system that supports a wide range of I/O, special I/O, and communication units.

Key Processing Features

The C200HG-CPU63-E is powered by a high-speed RISC-like processor with a basic instruction execution time as fast as 0.2 microseconds per step. Special instructions, including arithmetic operations, data shifting, and PID control, execute in just a few microseconds. The unit integrates 15.2 kilobytes of user program memory (RAM) and 5.3 kilobytes of data memory (DM). An optional memory cartridge can expand storage for program backups or additional comment data. The CPU supports up to 880 physical I/O points when combined with expansion racks, enabling complex machine control or process automation.


Built-in Communication Ports

A built-in RS-232C port (9-pin D-sub) is provided on the front panel, allowing direct connection to programming devices such as the CX-Programmer software running on a PC, or to operator interfaces and other serial devices. The port supports host link protocol, no-protocol communication, and one-to-one or one-to-N PC link. Memory and Data Management

The data memory (DM) is divided into general-purpose DM (0–6655) and special DM used for high-speed counters, analog adjustments, and error logging. The CPU also features retentive areas (HR area) that maintain their values through power cycles, and a built-in real-time clock with battery backup. Calendar and clock data can be used for time-driven control or event logging.

I/O and Expansion Capabilities

The C200HG-CPU63-E connects to up to two expansion I/O racks and one remote I/O master rack, each capable of hosting multiple I/O, analog, temperature control, or positioning modules. Total I/O addressing capacity is 880 points, including up to 512 local I/O points and 368 remote I/O points. The CPU automatically assigns I/O addresses at power-up, simplifying system design. High-speed counters (up to 50 kHz) are built into the CPU, supporting incremental encoder inputs for positioning or speed monitoring.

Programming is supported by OMRON’s CX-One software suite, specifically CX-Programmer, which runs under Windows operating systems. Languages include ladder diagram, mnemonic, and SFC (sequential function chart). Advanced instructions cover PID, floating-point math, matrix operations, and indirect addressing. The CPU unit supports online editing, allowing program changes while the PLC remains in run mode. Password protection and function block libraries enhance security and code reusability.

Environmental and Power Specifications

Operational temperature range is 0 to 55 degrees Celsius, with storage from -20 to 75 degrees Celsius. Humidity tolerance is 10% to 90% non-condensing. The unit requires a 5 VDC power supply from the backplane; typical consumption is 0.5 A. The built-in battery (lithium) retains memory for up to five years under normal conditions. The CPU includes a watchdog timer (WDT) with configurable timeout (10 to 240 ms), and an error history buffer that stores up to 20 errors with time stamps.


Diagnostics and Reliability

Self-diagnostic functions include CPU error detection, memory verification, I/O bus checks, and communication error monitoring. LED indicators on the front panel display RUN, ERROR, COMM, and battery voltage status. The CPU supports user-defined failure alarms and can trigger a safe shutdown sequence in case of major faults. For mission-critical applications, the CPU can be paired with a redundant power supply and a backup CPU configuration using the C200HW-PA204 series power units.
