D0-06DD2-D PLC Module: DL06 Series Micro Programmable Logic Controller

Product Overview

The D0-06DD2-D is a micro programmable logic controller from the DL06 series, manufactured by AutomationDirect. This compact PLC integrates 16 DC inputs and 16 DC outputs, providing a complete control solution for standalone machines and small automation systems. The D0-06DD2-D operates on a 24 V DC power supply, making it suitable for mobile equipment and applications where only DC power is available. The DL06 series is known for its high I/O density relative to its size, with the D0-06DD2-D offering a cost-effective platform for applications up to approximately 100 I/O points when expanded. The unit includes built-in communication ports for programming and connectivity to operator interfaces or other devices.

Key Features of D0-06DD2-D

The D0-06DD2-D features 16 digital inputs (sinking/sourcing configurable) and 16 digital outputs (sinking DC transistor). The outputs are rated at 0.5 A per point with a maximum of 4 A per common, suitable for driving small solenoids, relays, and indicator lights. The PLC includes two communication ports: a programming port (RS-232) for connecting to a PC running DirectSOFT software, and a second RS-232/RS-485 port for Modbus RTU communication with HMIs, drives, or other PLCs. The controller supports up to 4 expansion modules, allowing the total I/O count to be increased with additional digital or analog modules.

The DL06 CPU features a real-time clock and a battery-backed memory for data retention. The user program is stored in flash memory, eliminating the need for battery backup for the program itself. The instruction set includes timers, counters, math functions, PID loops, and high-speed counters (up to 10 kHz). The D0-06DD2-D includes four 10 kHz high-speed counters and four 10 kHz pulse outputs for simple motion control applications. The controller is programmed using DirectSOFT software, which supports ladder logic programming with a user-friendly interface. Diagnostic LEDs on the front panel indicate power, run, and I/O status, simplifying troubleshooting. The unit is designed for DIN rail mounting and uses removable terminal blocks for all field connections.

Functional Description

The D0-06DD2-D operates by executing the ladder logic program stored in its flash memory. Each scan cycle begins with the CPU reading the state of the 16 input terminals and any expansion inputs, then executing the ladder instructions, and finally updating the output terminals and expansion outputs. The high-speed counters operate independently of the scan cycle, using dedicated hardware to count pulses from encoders or high-speed sensors. The pulse outputs can generate up to 10 kHz square waves for controlling stepper drives or for simple speed control of small DC motors. The built-in Modbus RTU port allows the PLC to exchange data with an HMI panel or to act as a Modbus master polling drives and sensors. The real-time clock enables time-based functions such as weekly timers or event logging. When power is removed, the battery-backed RAM retains timer/counter current values, system registers, and user data. The user program is not lost because it is stored in flash memory, which does not require battery backup. The removable terminal blocks simplify wiring and allow the PLC to be replaced without disconnecting field wiring.

Applications

The AutomationDirect D0-06DD2-D PLC is used in small to medium sized machine control applications. Typical examples include conveyor control systems, packaging machines, batch mixing equipment, irrigation controllers, and HVAC systems for small buildings. The 24 V DC power supply makes it suitable for mobile equipment such as agricultural machinery and electric vehicles. The built-in high-speed counters and pulse outputs allow the D0-06DD2-D to perform simple positioning tasks without the need for separate motion controllers. For cost-sensitive OEMs, the DL06 series provides a reliable, feature-rich PLC at a competitive price point.
