Inovance H3U-3624MT Programmable Controller

The Inovance H3U-3624MT is a high-performance programmable logic controller (PLC) from the H3U series, designed for small to medium-scale automation systems. This compact unit integrates a CPU with 24 discrete inputs and 12 transistor outputs, including high-speed inputs and outputs for motion control applications. The H3U-3624MT supports multiple communication interfaces including Ethernet, CAN, and RS485, making it suitable for machine control, conveyor systems, and automated production lines.

Technical Specifications

The H3U-3624MT operates on a 24 V DC power supply. It features 24 digital inputs (sink/source, 24 V DC) of which 3 are high-speed inputs (up to 200 kHz) capable of handling encoder signals or high-speed counting. The 12 transistor outputs are sink type (NPN, 0.5 A per channel), with 2 high-speed outputs (up to 200 kHz) for pulse train output to stepper or servo drives. Program memory: 16 KB (expandable via SD card). Execution speed: 0.2 µs per basic instruction. Built-in communication ports: 1 Ethernet (Modbus TCP), 1 CAN (CANopen master), 2 RS485 (Modbus RTU master/slave). The controller includes a real-time clock and a USB port for programming. Dimensions: 90 mm (H) × 70 mm (W) × 60 mm (D). Operating temperature: 0°C to 55°C. Weight approximately 0.3 kg.

Key Features

  • 24 DC inputs (3 high-speed, 200 kHz)

  • 12 transistor sink outputs (2 high-speed, 200 kHz)

  • 16 KB user program memory, expandable via SD card

  • Basic instruction speed: 0.2 µs

  • High-speed counter (200 kHz) and PWM/PTO outputs

  • Ethernet port for Modbus TCP and network communication

  • CAN port for CANopen master (up to 32 slaves)

  • Two RS485 ports for Modbus RTU

  • USB port for programming and firmware upgrade

  • Real-time clock with battery backup

Motion Control and High-Speed I/O

The H3U-3624MT includes three high-speed inputs (X0, X1, X2) which can be configured as 200 kHz single-phase counters or 100 kHz two-phase quadrature encoder inputs. These are ideal for connecting incremental encoders for position feedback. The two high-speed outputs (Y0, Y1) support pulse train output (PTO) up to 200 kHz for stepper motor control, as well as PWM output for speed regulation of small DC motors. The CPU provides dedicated motion control instructions such as PLSR (ramp positioning) and PLSY (continuous pulse output), simplifying positioning tasks. The built-in electronic cam function allows synchronized motion of multiple axes.

Communication and Networking

The H3U-3624MT is equipped with an Ethernet port supporting Modbus TCP client and server. This allows connection to HMIs, SCADA systems, and higher-level IT networks. The CAN port supports CANopen DS301 master functionality, enabling communication with up to 32 slave devices (drives, remote I/O, encoders). The two RS485 ports support Modbus RTU master and slave, allowing connection to legacy devices and sensors. The controller also supports a dedicated programming protocol via USB or Ethernet for use with Inovance AutoShop software. The system can be configured as a Modbus gateway between Ethernet and serial networks.

Programming Environment

Inovance AutoShop is the integrated development environment for the H3U series. It supports ladder diagram (LD), structured text (ST), function block diagram (FBD), and sequential function chart (SFC). The software includes a library of pre-built function blocks for motion control, PID loops, and communication. Online monitoring, debug, and simulation are supported. The controller can be programmed over USB, Ethernet, or RS485. The firmware can be updated via USB or SD card.

Applications

Typical applications include small packaging machines (film wrapping, bagging), labeling machines, conveyor control, automatic testing equipment, and small-scale CNC routers. The high-speed I/O makes it suitable for position synchronization tasks such as flying saw or cut-to-length systems. The CANopen interface is valuable for distributed drives and remote I/O in larger machinery. The compact size allows mounting in small control cabinets.

Installation and Wiring

The H3U-3624MT is designed for DIN rail mounting (35 mm). The unit includes removable terminal blocks for power, inputs, and outputs. Connect 24 V DC to the L+ and M terminals. Inputs are sink/source configurable via common wiring. Outputs are NPN transistors; an external 24 V DC supply is required for the output common. High-speed inputs and outputs require shielded twisted-pair cables to reduce noise. The communication ports use standard RJ45 or 9-pin D-sub connectors (adapter cables may be required). A ground connection is provided on the DIN rail clip; ensure a low-impedance path to panel ground.

Environmental and Compliance

The H3U-3624MT is CE and RoHS compliant. Operating temperature: 0°C to 55°C. Storage: -25°C to 70°C. Humidity: 10-90% non-condensing. The unit is rated IP20 and must be installed in a control cabinet. Vibration resistance: 2g (10-55 Hz).

Conclusion

The Inovance H3U-3624MT programmable controller offers a balanced combination of high-speed I/O, motion control features, and versatile communication interfaces in a compact package. Its 0.2 µs execution speed, 200 kHz pulse outputs, and CANopen master capability make it a competitive choice for small to medium automation projects.
