Lenze EVF8216-E AC Frequency Inverter (00402838)

The Lenze EVF8216-E (ID 00402838) is a variable frequency drive (VFD) from the Lenze 8200 vector series. It is designed for three‑phase induction motors, providing rated power of 5.5 kW (7.5 HP) at 400 V AC, 50/60 Hz. The drive features sensorless vector control, delivering high starting torque (150% at 0.5 Hz) and precise speed regulation. The EVF8216‑E is intended for heavy‑duty industrial applications such as conveyors, mixers, extruders, and pumps. It is housed in a compact IP20 enclosure suitable for control cabinet mounting.

Functional Description

The EVF8216-E uses IGBT technology to convert fixed frequency AC power into a variable frequency, variable voltage output. The sensorless vector control algorithm estimates motor speed and torque without an encoder, providing precise speed control and high dynamic performance. The drive includes a built‑in PID controller for pressure, flow, or temperature regulation. An integrated braking chopper allows connection of an external braking resistor for rapid deceleration of high‑inertia loads.

I/O and Control Terminals

The drive provides configurable I/O: 4 digital inputs, 1 analog input (0–10V or 4–20mA), 1 analog output (0–10V), and 1 relay output. A potentiometer on the front panel allows local speed adjustment. The RS‑485 port supports Modbus RTU communication for connection to PLCs and SCADA systems. Optionally, a CAN bus module can be added for integration with higher‑level controls.

Protection and Monitoring

The EVF8216-E features comprehensive protection: motor thermal overload (I²t), drive overtemperature, input phase loss, output short‑circuit, ground fault, and DC bus over/undervoltage. It includes a digital display (7‑segment) for parameter setting and fault code indication. The last four fault events are stored in non‑volatile memory. The drive also provides a built‑in RTC (real‑time clock) for time‑stamped logging.


Applications

Typical uses include conveyor systems, industrial mixers, centrifugal pumps and fans, extruders, and small hoists. The vector control mode is particularly suited for applications with varying load torque, such as mixing machines and crushers.

Installation Overview

Mount the drive vertically on a flat metal plate or DIN rail. Maintain 100 mm clearance above and below for ventilation. Connect the mains input to L1, L2, L3 and the motor to U, V, W. Use shielded motor cables and ground the shield at both ends. Control wiring should be kept separate from power wiring. For braking resistor, connect to terminals DB+ and DB‑. Commissioning can be performed via the keypad or with Lenze’s PC software (Engineer).
