Mitsubishi RJ71EIP91 EtherNet/IP Communication Module for MELSEC iQ-R Series

Product Overview

The Mitsubishi RJ71EIP91 is an EtherNet/IP network communication module for the MELSEC iQ-R series programmable logic controllers. It allows iQ-R PLCs to act as an EtherNet/IP adapter (slave) or scanner (master) on an EtherNet/IP network, enabling data exchange with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, CompactLogix, and other CIP-compliant devices. The module supports both implicit (cyclic) and explicit (message) communications, making it ideal for mixed-vendor automation environments. It is a key component for integrating Mitsubishi PLCs into existing Rockwell Automation networks.


Key Features of RJ71EIP91

The module features a dual-port Ethernet switch (2 RJ45 ports) allowing daisy-chain or ring topologies. It supports 10/100 Mbps, auto-negotiation, and MDI/MDI-X. As a scanner, it can manage up to 32 connections with a total of 1440 bytes of input and 1440 bytes of output data. As an adapter, it supports up to 16 connections. The module includes a built-in web server for configuration and diagnostics. It is configured via GX Works3 engineering software with intuitive tag-based mapping.

The RJ71EIP91 supports CIP (Common Industrial Protocol) explicit messaging for parameter read/write, and it can be used for time synchronization (IEEE 1588). It has LED indicators for network status, module status, and link activity. The module is powered by the iQ-R backplane (5 V DC, 0.6 A). Operating temperature is 0 to 55°C. It is certified by ODVA for EtherNet/IP conformance. The module also supports the "Quick Connect" feature for fast device replacement

Functional Description

The module establishes cyclic I/O connections with targets (e.g., PowerFlex drives, Point I/O). It automatically assembles data from the PLC's memory into EtherNet/IP frames. The user configures the tag mapping in GX Works3, linking PLC device addresses to CIP assembly objects. The module also supports explicit messaging for reading/writing non-cyclic data, such as drive parameters. The built-in switch allows daisy-chaining without an external switch, reducing wiring.

Applications

The RJ71EIP91 is used in systems where a Mitsubishi iQ-R PLC needs to communicate with Allen-Bradley controllers or remote I/O, or to connect to EtherNet/IP enabled drives and sensors. It is also used for system upgrades where legacy PLCs are replaced with iQ-R but the field devices remain EtherNet/IP.
