The Omron NE1A-SCPU02 is a stand‑alone programmable safety controller from the NE1A series. It is designed to replace multiple safety relays and provides flexible, configurable safety logic for machine guarding applications. The controller features 16 safety inputs (digital) and 8 safety outputs (transistor, PNP), and it supports DeviceNet Safety network communication. With a compact form factor and SIL 3 / PL e compliance, the NE1A-SCPU02 is suitable for emergency stop circuits, light curtains, two‑hand controls, and safety gate monitoring in industrial machinery.

The NE1A-SCPU02 executes a user‑defined safety logic program that can combine input devices such as emergency stop buttons, safety gates, light curtains, and enabling switches. The program controls the safety outputs which are forced to a de‑energized state whenever a dangerous condition is detected. The controller also monitors its own internal diagnostics, including cross‑circuit detection, output short‑circuit detection, and watchdog timer faults. All safety outputs are equipped with forced‑guided contact equivalents (semiconductor outputs with built‑in cross‑fault detection).
The built‑in DeviceNet Safety interface allows the controller to exchange safety data with other CIP Safety devices, such as remote I/O blocks, safety light curtains, and safety drives. It also supports standard DeviceNet communications for non‑safety data (e.g., status indication to a PLC). The controller can act as a DeviceNet Safety slave or master, enabling distributed safety architectures. Up to 32 NE1A controllers can be connected on the same network.
Configuration is performed using CX‑One Safety & Automation software, which provides a ladder editor with pre‑validated safety function blocks. The software includes a simulator and diagnostic tools. The program is password‑protected to prevent unauthorized modifications. The controller stores the program in non‑volatile flash memory, and an optional memory cassette allows easy copying to other units.
Front‑panel LEDs provide local status: power (green), run (green), safety output status (green), input status (green), network status (green/red), and error (red). Detailed diagnostic information can be read via the DeviceNet network or by connecting a programming terminal. The controller also logs the last 10 fault events with timestamps.
The NE1A-SCPU02 is used in packaging machines, robotic workcells, conveyor systems, printing presses, and special‑purpose machinery that require safety monitoring of multiple devices. It replaces up to five standard safety relays, reducing panel space and wiring complexity.
The Omron NE1A-SCPU02 provides a flexible, high‑integrity safety control solution with integrated DeviceNet Safety, simplifying the implementation of complex safety circuits in modern automation systems.
