The Siemens 6ES7317-2FK14-0AB0 is a SIMATIC S7-300 central processing unit designated as CPU 317F-2PN/DP. This failsafe CPU combines standard automation capabilities with integrated safety functions for applications requiring high reliability. It features a central processing unit with 1.5 MB of work memory, supporting both standard program execution and failsafe logic for safety-related tasks. This CPU is suitable for applications with high safety requirements and demanding program size needs.

Memory and Processing

Work memory capacity: 1536 KB. The CPU includes 512 counters and 512 timers for standard automation tasks. Supply voltage: 24 V DC. Program execution supports complex logic operations and data handling required for demanding industrial applications. A Micro Memory Card is required for program and data storage, with card sizes up to 8 MB supported. The CPU retains program data in non-volatile memory when power is removed.

Communication Interfaces

Environmental Specifications

The SIPLUS version based on this CPU is equipped with conformal coating for extended temperature range operation from -25°C to +60°C. This coating protects the electronic components from moisture, dust, and corrosive atmospheres. The standard CPU operates from 0°C to 60°C under normal industrial conditions. Protection rating conforms to IP20 for installation in protected environments and control cabinets.

Programming and Configuration

Configuration is performed using TIA Portal Step 7 software. Programming languages supported include Ladder Diagram LAD, Function Block Diagram FBD, Statement List STL, Structured Control Language SCL, and GRAPH for sequential function chart programming. For safety-related programming, additional failsafe blocks and certified function libraries are used. The CPU can serve as a PROFINET IO controller and a PROFIBUS DP master simultaneously within the same application.

Diagnostics and Maintenance

LED indicators provide status information for power, run, stop, and fault conditions. The CPU maintains a diagnostic buffer for troubleshooting and event logging. For the SIPLUS version with conformal coating, extended diagnostic features include temperature monitoring. Remote diagnostics are possible via PROFINET or PROFIBUS communication links using standard diagnostic tools within TIA Portal.

The CPU carries CE marking for EMC and low-voltage compliance. cULus approval for North American installations. Marine approvals available for certain applications. The failsafe version is certified by TÜV for use in safety-related systems meeting SIL3 requirements when properly configured with failsafe I/O modules.
