Introduction: edge computing core for harsh environment
In the architecture of Industry 4.0 and smart energy, protocol conversion and edge data processing are the bridges connecting physical devices and cloud digital twins. The MXA-200 IoT Energy Gateway launched by ADLINK is a high-performance edge computing platform designed to meet this demand. This device is based on the NXP i.MX8M Plus quad core Cortex-A53 processor and has industrial grade wide temperature capability (-20 ° C to 70 ° C). It is designed specifically for applications such as renewable energy monitoring, electric vehicle charging station management, and intelligent factory data acquisition.
Hardware Overview and Key Points for Mechanical Installation
1.1 Core specifications and I/O layout
As a protocol conversion hub, the hardware design of MXA-200 balances performance and reliability. The core configuration includes:
Computing Core: NXP i.MX8M Plus Quad Core 1.8GHz, comes standard with 2GB LPDDR4 and 32GB eMMC storage.
Wired connection: Gigabit Ethernet port (RJ45) with dual independent MAC addresses, where LAN1 defaults to DHCP and LAN2 defaults to static IP 192.168.50.2 for local debugging.
Serial communication: Two physically isolated RS-232/422/485 serial ports (5-pin terminals), supporting the access of fieldbus devices.
Expansion slots: M.2 2230 E-Key (Wi Fi/BT) and M.2 2242 B-Key (USB 3.0 protocol, dedicated to 5G/4G LTE modules).
1.2 Practical operation of DIN rail and wall mounted installation
According to the manual drawings, the mechanical dimensions of the equipment are 110.90mm (length) x 40mm (width) x 131.4mm (height), and it adopts a fanless metal shell for heat dissipation. For industrial cabinet installation, it is recommended to prioritize using DIN rail method:
Install the hanging ear: Use the two flat head screws included in the wall kit to secure the DIN rail buckle to the back of the device.
Insert the guide rail: Hook the bottom buckle of the device onto the upper edge of the guide rail, press down until you hear a "click" sound, ensuring that the buckle spring is fully locked.
Wall mounted backup: If there is no guide rail on site, you can use the 4 pan head screws in the kit to install the L-shaped bracket for wall mounting.
Key details: Grounding protection is crucial. Be sure to use the grounding screw (FGND) on the front of the device to connect the cabinet ground wire, in order to prevent static discharge and lightning surge from damaging the communication interface.
DC power connection and power on diagnosis
2.1 Power wiring specifications
The MXA-200 is powered by a 3-pin pluggable terminal and supports 12V to 24V DC input.
Wiring steps: With the power turned off, connect the positive pole (V+) to Pin1, the negative pole (V -) to Pin3, and the middle Pin2 to ground (GND).
Wire gauge requirements: It is recommended to use 16-24 AWG copper wire, and the torque value must comply with the terminal block specifications.
Power on confirmation: After connecting the power, the green PWR indicator light on the front panel should light up immediately.
Engineer reminder: It is essential to use LPS (Limited Power Supply) or SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage) circuit power supplies that comply with IEC/UL certification. The manual emphasizes that if the power cord needs to be removed, use a straight screwdriver to press the orange release hole of the terminal, and do not directly pull the cable to avoid damaging the internal snap spring of the terminal.
Bottom layer configuration and network optimization of Debian system
The device comes pre installed with Linux system, and users need to perform headless management through SSH. This is the most essential skill set for gateway debugging.
3.1 Initial Connection and SSH Login
Network direct connection: Set the debugging host network segment to 192.168.50.xx (such as 192.168.50.100) and connect it to the LAN 2 port of MXA-200 through a network cable.
Terminal software: Use Putty or OpenSSH, connection address 192.168.50.2, port 22.
Voucher information:
Username: root
Password: adlink
3.2 Dual Network Port Strategy and Modification (Key)
The network configuration of the system is based on the systemd networkd service, and the configuration file is located in the/etc/systemd/network/directory. When LAN1 needs to be set as a fixed IP on site, it is necessary to modify 10-eth.networkconf; To modify LAN2, edit 11-eth1.network.exe.
Query current IP: Use ifconfig or IP addr to confirm the network port status.
Restart network service: After modifying and saving, execute systemctl restart systemd networkd to make the configuration take effect.
3.3 Isolation serial port (RS-232/422/485) mode switching
This is the most common requirement in industrial sites, where the MXA-200 controls the physical layer transceiver through GPIO virtual file system without the need for jumper caps.
Query current mode:
bash
cat /sys/class/gpio_switch/com1Mode
cat /sys/class/gpio_switch/com2Mode
Setting mode (taking COM1 as an example):
bash
#Switch to RS-422
echo RS422 > /sys/class/gpio_switch/com1Mode
#Switch to RS-485 (two-wire system)
echo RS485 > /sys/class/gpio_switch/com1Mode
Device node mapping: In the Linux application layer, COM1 corresponds to/dev/ttymxc2, and COM2 corresponds to/dev/ttymxc3. Upper level applications (such as Node RED or Python PySerial) need to read and write to this node.

4G/5G cellular module software activation process
After the installation of the hardware physical layer is completed (see the hardware guide in the next chapter), software activation is crucial. MXA-200 uses NetworkManager for cellular connection management.
Check modem recognition:
bash
nmcli d
Confirm the presence of cdc-wdm0 or similar character devices in the list.
New cellular connection:
bash
nmcli c add type gsm ifname cdc-wdm0 con-name cellular
Activate connection:
bash
nmcli c up cellular
Connection test:
Check if the wwan0 interface has obtained the operator IP (usually 10. x.x.x or 100. x.x.x) through ifconfig. Use ping-I wwan0 8.8.8.8 to force the specified interface to test external network connectivity.
Wireless Module Hardware Integration Guide (Physical Layer Disassembly)
For models that are not pre installed with wireless modules at the factory, users need to disassemble and install them themselves. The following is a standardized operating procedure organized according to the manual.
5.1 Preparation work
Tools: Cross screwdriver, open-end wrench (for antenna nut), thermal pad (included with module).
Dismantling: Unscrew the 8 screws at the bottom of the chassis and remove the top cover.
5.2 Antenna feeder layout strategy
The manual specifies in detail the antenna positions for different modules, which must be strictly followed to pass EMC testing:
Wi Fi module: Usually uses ANT1 and ANT2 (specific holes on the front or side panel).
4G module (such as Quectel EM05-G): using ANT3 and ANT4 (main and diversity).
5G module (such as Telit MV32-W-AD): All four antenna interfaces (ANT1-ANT4) need to be used to achieve MIMO 4x4, and installation should correspond to the "MAIN", "DIV", "MIMO1", and "MIMO2" labels on the module.
5.3 Key installation steps and torque specifications
Install RF coaxial cable: Thread the SMA connector through the antenna opening, insert the gasket, and tighten the hex nut. The torque value should be controlled within 6-8 kgf · cm. Tightness can damage the SMA interface pin, while looseness can result in poor contact.
Fix M.2 module: Insert the module diagonally into the M.2 slot, press down and fix it with hexagonal bolts. Torque value: 4-5 kgf · cm.
Adhesive thermal conductive aluminum block (the most important):
Special note in the manual: Both sides of the heat-conducting aluminum block are covered with protective film (Release Paper), which must be removed before installation.
Cover the aluminum block on the RF chip and fix it with M2.5 and M3 screws, with a torque value of 3.5-4 kgf · cm. This design is used to conduct heat from high-power 5G chips to the metal casing. If this step is missed, the device will experience frequency reduction or even restart due to overheating under high loads.
Common "brick rescue" and recovery mechanisms
Factory reset: The device is equipped with a "Function Button" on the side. Press and hold this button until the system automatically restarts to reset all network and user configurations (suitable for IP forgetting or password loss scenarios).
BSP firmware update: When flashing eMMC through microSD card, the PGM LED (programmable indicator light) will remain on, please do not power off during the process.
Safety compliance and working environment
The manual clearly states that the device complies with UL 61010-1 and IEC 62368-1 safety standards. Special attention should be paid to the following environmental restrictions:
Working temperature: Although the chip supports -20 ° C~70 ° C, the safety section of the manual recommends an operating environment temperature of 5 ° C to 50 ° C, which is based on the surface temperature touch limit of IEC 60950-1/62368-1.
Altitude limit: The maximum working altitude is 5000 meters.
California Proposition 65 warns that products containing chemicals such as lead, cadmium, phthalates, etc. must comply with local WEEE regulations when disposing of waste.
