Introduction: Design Philosophy of Compact Reinforced Edge Control Platform
In the fields of intelligent transportation, facility management, and industrial automation, edge controllers are often deployed in cabinets or mobile carriers with limited space, unstable power supply, and severe vibration. The ADLINK Matrix series MXE-210 is a compact fanless embedded computer tailored for such scenarios. Based on Intel ® The Atom x7-E3950 or x5-E3930 processor (formerly Apollo Lake-I platform), with an ultra small size of 140 × 110 × 58mm, offers dual GbE, dual switchable serial ports (RS-232/422/485), dual USB 3.0, and dual Mini PCIe expansion slots, and supports ultra wide temperature operation from -40 ° C to 85 ° C (specific models). More noteworthy is that it integrates rich wafer interfaces such as I2C, HSUART, GPIO, etc. internally, providing great customization flexibility for system integrators.
Hardware architecture and core features
1.1 Processor Platform
MXE-210 offers two SKUs:
MXE-211: Equipped with Atom x7-E3950 (quad core 1.6GHz, burst 2.0GHz, 12W TDP), it is suitable for medium load edge computing and protocol conversion.
MXE-212: Equipped with Atom x5-E3930 (dual core 1.8GHz, burst 1.8GHz, 6.5W TDP), suitable for low-power, single task scenarios.
Both are integrated with Intel Gen9 graphics engine and support DP1.2 output (up to 4096 × 4096) 2160@60Hz )Can be connected to a 4K monitor for local monitoring. The memory adopts a single DDR3L 1600MHz SO-DIMM, with standard configuration of 2GB and maximum support of 8GB.
1.2 Storage Expansion Options
Onboard mSATA full-size slot: used for installing system SSDs, supporting SATA III protocol.
Optional 2.5-inch SATA SSD: Connected through an internal SATA wafer (CN32), requiring an additional mounting bracket.
MicroSD card slot (CN31): Supports up to 32GB of expandable storage and can be used for system backup or data logging.
1.3 Wireless and cellular expansion
The device provides two full-size Mini PCIe slots:
Slot 1 (CN14): Supports mSATA SSD or WiFi/Bluetooth module (USB+PCIe signal).
Slot 2 (CN16): Comes with a matching USIM card slot (CN15), specifically designed for 3G/4G LTE modules, and supports telecom operator authentication.
Engineer reminder: The electrical definitions of the two slots are different - Slot 1 focuses on storage (SATA signal), while Slot 2 focuses on communication (USB+PCIe+SIM). Before installation, it is necessary to confirm that the module type matches the slot.
1.4 Internal Expansion Interface (Key Features)
The MXE-210 motherboard provides a variety of wafer connectors for customized expansion:
HSUART (CN22): 1 high-speed UART (including RTS/CTS flow control), used to connect serial peripherals.
I2C × 2 (CN18, CN20): Different I2C buses are respectively introduced, which can be used to mount sensors, EEPROM, or IO expansion chips.
USB 2.0 (CN19): Internal USB Host interface, capable of connecting encryption dongles or dedicated modules.
GPIO/Interrupt (CN27): Extended reset signal.
GPS antenna power supply (CN12): Provides+5V output for active GPS antenna.
RTC Battery (CN_SAT): Standard 3V button battery holder, used for system clock maintenance.
These interfaces make the MXE-210 far superior to ordinary industrial computers and can evolve into specialized controllers for specific industries.
Practical operation of mechanical installation and expansion module
2.1 Dimensions and Installation Method
Size: 140 (W) × 110 (D) × 58 (H) mm, weight approximately 0.95kg.
DIN rail installation: Standard rail bracket, fixed to the back of the equipment with 2 M4 screws (hole spacing detailed in the manual mechanical diagram), suitable for standard 35mm DIN rails.
Wall mounted installation: Optional wall mounted kit, pay attention to safety constraints - as the antenna interface is located on the front panel, it is necessary to keep the front and rear panels on both sides when wall mounted. It is strictly prohibited to face the top or bottom of the device towards the wall to avoid affecting antenna radiation and heat dissipation airflow.
2.2 Disassembly of Bottom Cover and Internal Access
All internal module installations must first remove the bottom cover:
Unscrew the 9 screws at the bottom (note that there may be differences in length, mark them properly).
Be careful to separate the bottom cover and be careful not to break the internal wiring (especially the antenna feeder).
2.3 mSATA SSD installation
Insert the mSATA module into Slot 1 (CN14) at an angle of approximately 30 °, aligning with the golden finger.
Press down to level and secure with the two M2.5 × L5 screws included.
Attention: mSATA and Mini PCIe have the same physical interface but different electrical components. Do not insert the WiFi module into the mSATA dedicated slot.
2.4 Installation of 3G/4G LTE module and SIM card
First, remove the remaining two screws from the right panel and remove the side panel.
Insert the Nano/Micro SIM card (to be provided by the user) into the USIM card slot (CN15), ensuring that the metal contacts are facing downwards and aligned with the missing corner direction.
Insert the LTE module into Slot 2 (CN16) at the same angle and fixed method as mSATA.
Connect the antenna feeder to the MAIN/AUX interface of the module (the antenna needs to be arranged in advance to the reserved hole on the front panel).
Important: Be careful when installing the module and do not damage the wafer cables (especially audio and expansion cables) on the motherboard. Before replacing the bottom cover, check if all cables are pressed down.
Power Design and Power Management
3.1 Wide voltage input terminal
MXE-210 adopts 3-pin pluggable terminals (GND, V -, V+):
Input range: 6V~36V DC, covering automotive (12V/24V), industrial (24V), and battery powered (6V) scenarios.
Polarity protection: The manual clearly warns that incorrect polarity may cause permanent damage. It is necessary to use a multimeter on site to confirm the output polarity of the adapter.
Power certification: A power supply that complies with LPS and SELV (IEC 60950-1) must be used, with a Tma not lower than 50 ° C.
3.2 Reference for power consumption measurement (24V power supply)
Power consumption under working conditions
Shutdown (S5) 3.6W
System idle (Windows desktop) 11.2W
Processor fully loaded (CPU 100%) 35.2W
Full system load (CPU+IO) 25W
Recommended power supply of 40W (considering high temperature derating)
Cooling strategy: The main heating element (CPU/PCH) is located on the left side and is cooled by contacting the housing through a thermal pad. Make sure to leave at least 5cm (2 inches) clearance at the top to maintain natural convection. The device supports a standard temperature range of 0-50 ° C, and the expansion model (with industrial grade storage) can reach -20~70 ° C. The MXE-212 super expansion version (with added heat sink) can also support -40~85 ° C, suitable for extreme cold or high temperature applications.

Watchdog (WDT) and SEMA management software
5.1 Watchdog mechanism
The MXE-210 has a built-in hardware watchdog timer, which is controlled through SEMA 3.5 API or driver program. Typical workflow:
The application calls WDT initialization and sets a timeout value (in seconds or minutes).
Start the timer.
The application periodically 'feeds the dog' (Reset WDT).
If the system deadlocks or the application crashes, the hardware will automatically reset the system after timeout.
Windows environment: SEMA Utility and WDT driver (located on the accompanying CD or official website) need to be installed first, and the API can be called with administrator privileges.
Linux environment: It can be controlled through SEMA open source library or directly by operating LPC I/O registers. Specific implementation needs to refer to the SDK documentation.
5.2 SEMA Intelligent Management
SEMA (Smart Embedded Management Agent) provides:
System health monitoring: real-time CPU temperature, system temperature, input voltage, power consumption.
Device identity information: serial number, firmware version, running statistics.
User defined Flash: 1KB storage area for users to store configuration parameters or device identifiers.
SEMA can be easily integrated into SCADA or IoT platforms through HTTP API or local library calls.
Quick check of key interface pins
6.1 DB9 serial port (COM1/COM2)
Pin RS-232 RS-422 RS-485
1 DCD# TXD- 485-
2 Rx TXD+ 485+
3 Tx RXD+ N/C
4 DTR# RXD- N/C
5 GND N/C N/C
When using RS-485 two-wire system in practice, only Pin1 (DATA -) and Pin2 (DATA+) need to be connected, and 120 Ω terminal resistors need to be added at both ends of the bus.
6.2 Internal Expansion Interface Selection
HSUART(CN22):6-pin wafer, Containing 3.3V, Rx, Tx, CTS, RTS, GND, it can be used to connect GPS modules or industrial serial sensors.
I2C (CN18/CN20): It introduces different I2C buses, including clock, data, and interrupts (partially), and can mount multiple slave devices.
USB 2.0 (CN19): Standard 4-pin+shielded, can be pulled out to the front panel or connected to a dongle.
Clear CMOS (CN24): Short circuit Pin1-Pin2 to restore BIOS factory settings - suitable for emergency recovery when unable to start due to incorrect configuration.
Key points for on-site troubleshooting and maintenance
7.1 No response when powered on
Check if the DC input voltage is within the range of 6-36V and if the polarity is correct.
Confirm if the power adapter meets the minimum output current (at least at full load) 4.2A@6V or 0.7A@36V ).
Observe if the Standby LED (blue) on the front panel is lit - if it is lit but the system does not start, it may be a motherboard malfunction.
7.2 Serial communication failure
Enter BIOS to confirm that the mode settings of COM1/COM2 match the actual wiring.
Use a self loop (Pin2-Pin3 short circuit) to test if the RS-232 transceiver is functioning properly.
During RS-485 long-distance communication, check the terminal resistance and shield grounding.
7.3 System overheating, frequency reduction or shutdown
Check if the heat dissipation channel is blocked (leave a 5cm clearance at the top).
If using an extended temperature model, confirm if an industrial grade mSATA/SATA SSD is installed - regular commercial grade SSDs may fail at high temperatures.
Read the temperature curve in BIOS System Management and confirm that the heat sink is in good contact with the CPU.
7.4 Mini PCIe module not recognized
Confirm that the module is inserted into the correct slot (Slot 1 for mSATA/storage, Slot 2 for communication/USIM).
Check if the USIM card is installed properly and if the metal contacts are oxidized.
Confirm in BIOS Onboard Device Configuration that the corresponding LAN/WiFi device is not disabled.
7.5 Clear CMOS Operation
If it cannot start due to BIOS incorrect configuration, you can short-circuit Pin1 and Pin2 of CN24 (using jumper caps or tweezers), power on for 5 seconds, remove the jumper, and CMOS will return to default.
Environmental Compliance and Safety Warning
Working temperature: Standard model 0~50 ° C; Extended model -20~70 ° C (requires industrial grade storage); The super extended model (MXE-212) can reach -40~85 ° C (requires the installation of a heat sink kit).
