
Hardware Installation and Configuration Guide
4.1 USB-3488A Installation
Connect the USB cable to an idle USB 2.0 (or 3.0) port on the computer.
The operating system automatically recognizes new devices. If the driver is not automatically installed, run the installation program provided by ADLINK.
After installation, you should see "ADLINK USB-3488A GPIB Interface" or similar devices in the Device Manager.
Connect the instrument to the GPIB port (standard 24 pin female) of USB-3488A using the included GPIB cable. Pay attention to locking the screws at both ends of the cable.
4.2 Installation of LPCI/LPCIe-3488A
Turn off the computer power and open the chassis.
Select an available PCI (LPCI-3488A) or PCIe x1 (LPCIe-3488A) slot.
Insert the card and secure the baffle (if using a low baffle, it needs to be replaced).
Start the system and install the drivers (if the system does not automatically detect them, run the installation program).
Connect GPIB instrument.
4.3 Multi card support
The system can install multiple 3488A cards, each card distinguished by a different device ID (usually assigned by the operating system). In the software, the target card is specified by device index or logical unit number (LUN).
Common troubleshooting and optimization
The device cannot recognize:
USB version: Check if the USB port has sufficient power supply (try other ports); Reinstall the driver.
PCI/PCIe version: Confirm if the card is fully inserted into the slot; Check interrupt allocation in BIOS; Try replacing the slot.
GPIB communication timeout (TIMO):
Check if the cable connections are secure and if the equipment power is turned on.
Confirm that the device address settings are correct (primary and secondary addresses).
Appropriately increase the timeout period (such as T20s).
Data transmission rate does not meet the standard:
Ensure that the length of GPIB cables and the number of cascades comply with specifications (total length ≤ 20m, equipment ≤ 14).
Check if multiple devices are simultaneously occupying the bus (which can be optimized through serial polling).
API compatibility issues:
Confirm that the function name and parameters called by the application are consistent with the NI-488.2 standard.
If using VISA, ensure that the VISA library version matches the ADLINK driver.
Windows 10/11 driver signature issue:
If encountering a driver signature error, you can temporarily enable the "disable driver forced signature" mode for installation, or use the signed driver provided by ADLINK (which should have been signed in recent versions).
Application scenarios and typical cases
Production line functional testing: Use LPCIe-3488A in conjunction with multiple digital multimeters, signal sources, and switch matrices to achieve PCBA automation testing.
R&D laboratory: USB-3488A is connected to a laptop to quickly debug the GPIB command set of new instruments.
Old system upgrade: Replace the discontinued NI PCI-GPIB card with LPCI-3488A, without the need to rewrite upper layer software, extending the service life of ATE equipment.
