Product Overview
The National Instruments PXI-4496 is a sound and vibration input module for PXI systems. It provides 16 analog input channels with 24 bit resolution and integrated IEPE signal conditioning. The module is designed for acoustic and vibration measurement in applications that require many synchronized channels, low noise, and high dynamic range.
The PXI-4496 is part of the NI dynamic signal acquisition family. It is used in machine condition monitoring, modal analysis, noise and vibration testing, and structural dynamic measurement. Because it is a PXI module, it can be synchronized with other instruments in the same chassis, including signal generators and digitizers.
IEPE Signal Conditioning
IEPE sensors require constant current excitation and AC coupling for many sound and vibration measurements. The PXI-4496 includes integrated IEPE conditioning so that accelerometers and microphones can be connected without external signal conditioners. This reduces wiring complexity and improves repeatability in multi channel measurement systems.
Engineers can configure excitation and coupling settings through software. Sensor compatibility and input range should be verified for each measurement. Proper sensor mounting, cabling, and grounding are important for accurate results, especially at higher frequencies where cable effects and mounting resonance can influence the measurement.
Resolution and Dynamic Range
The 24 bit analog to digital conversion and high dynamic range design support measurement of small signals in the presence of larger ones. This is important in acoustic and vibration testing, where low level components can carry useful diagnostic information. The module includes anti alias filtering to support frequency domain analysis.
Simultaneous sampling across all 16 channels preserves phase relationships, which is essential in modal analysis, beamforming, and multi sensor correlation. Engineers can compute spectra, transfer functions, and order analysis results with confidence that channel timing is consistent. Averaging and windowing choices should be documented for comparability across test runs.
PXI Integration and Synchronization
The PXI-4496 can be synchronized with other PXI modules through the chassis trigger lines and clocks. Multiple modules can be combined to build systems with more than 16 channels while maintaining coherent sampling. This is valuable in large channel count acoustic arrays and structural test setups.
The module is supported by NI-DAQmx and related NI software for dynamic signal acquisition. Engineers can configure channels, sampling rates, IEPE excitation, and triggering through standard software tools. Data can be streamed to the host for analysis or logged for later processing.
Installation and Measurement Practice
Proper installation and measurement practice affect the quality of sound and vibration data. Sensors should be mounted according to their specifications, cables should be secured and routed away from power conductors, and grounds should be arranged to avoid loops. The chassis should be installed where temperature and vibration are within its ratings.
Calibration of sensors and signal chains should be considered part of the measurement program. Documentation of sensor sensitivity, cable length, and module settings helps maintain traceability and supports comparison between test campaigns.
