Product Overview
The National Instruments PXIe-6356 is a multifunction data acquisition module for PXI Express systems. It belongs to the NI X Series family and provides eight analog input channels with 16 bit resolution and a maximum single channel sampling rate of 1.25 MS/s. The module also includes two analog output channels, 24 digital input and output lines, and four counters.
The PXIe-6356 is designed for automated test, laboratory measurement, and control applications that require fast acquisition in a PXI Express chassis. Because it is a PXI Express module, it can be synchronized with switches, signal generators, and other instruments in the same chassis, which supports coordinated multi instrument test sequences.
Fast Analog Input
The eight analog input channels provide 16 bit resolution and a maximum single channel rate of 1.25 MS/s, with the aggregate rate shared across active channels. Selectable input ranges allow the module to match different signal levels and use the available resolution effectively. The analog input system supports hardware timed acquisition, external sample clocks, and triggering.
Multichannel scanning can be configured for single ended or differential connections depending on the accessory and wiring. Differential wiring is often preferred for low level signals and for rejecting common mode noise. Engineers should validate sustained throughput for the planned channel count and sample rate before deployment.
Analog Output and Digital I/O
The module includes two 16 bit analog output channels for control voltages, setpoints, and waveform generation. Hardware timed output supports repeatable waveform sequences, which is useful for stimulus response testing and control loop validation. Engineers should verify the load and settling requirements of the connected device.
Twenty four digital lines provide logic level control, relay driving through external conditioning, and status monitoring. Four 32 bit counters support event counting, frequency measurement, pulse generation, and encoder position tracking. The combination of analog and digital functions allows the module to handle mixed signal tasks in one PXI Express slot.
Timing and Synchronization
NI-DAQmx provides start triggers, reference triggers, pause triggers, and sample clock configuration for the PXIe-6356. These features allow acquisition and generation to be aligned with external events or with other PXI Express modules. Counter outputs can be routed as triggers, and analog or digital events can gate tasks.
Within a PXI Express chassis, the module can share trigger lines and clocks with other instruments. This supports sequences that route signals, apply stimuli, capture responses, and evaluate results in a defined order. Documenting trigger routing and clock sources helps ensure reproducibility across test stations.
Software and Accessories
The PXIe-6356 is supported by NI-DAQmx and can be programmed with LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, Measurement Studio, and other NI-DAQmx compatible environments. The driver handles channel configuration, scaling, calibration metadata, and task management. Screw terminal, spring terminal, and mass termination accessories are available for different wiring needs.
Wiring practice affects measurement quality. Shielded cable, separation from power switching conductors, and a defined ground architecture improve results in electrically noisy environments. Engineers should verify channel function and calibration periodically to maintain confidence in long term measurements.
