Product Overview
The National Instruments NI-9237 is a bridge input module for CompactDAQ and CompactRIO systems. It provides four analog input channels with 24 bit resolution and internal bridge excitation. The module is designed for strain gauges, load cells, pressure sensors, and torque sensors, which produce small differential signals that require stable excitation and low noise amplification.
The NI-9237 is part of the NI C Series platform, which provides modular signal conditioning for data acquisition and control. Bridge measurements are common in mechanical test, structural validation, and industrial weighing. The module integrates excitation, amplification, and filtering so that these measurements can be made without external conditioning hardware.
Bridge Configurations and Excitation
The module supports quarter bridge, half bridge, and full bridge configurations. Internal excitation removes the need for an external bridge supply in many setups. Engineers select the excitation level and bridge configuration in software and must ensure that the sensor and wiring match that selection. Incorrect configuration can produce inaccurate readings or apparent faults.
For quarter bridge measurements, lead resistance and three wire connections affect accuracy. Engineers should confirm the nominal gauge resistance and the wiring arrangement before configuring the channel. Bridge completion components are provided where required by the selected configuration.
Resolution, Filtering, and Sampling
Twenty four bit conversion provides fine resolution for small bridge outputs, which is essential when measuring low strain levels or using sensors with low sensitivity. Input filtering reduces noise from machinery, drives, and other electrical sources. This improves stability in test bench and industrial environments where bridge sensors are often located near motors and switching equipment.
Sampling rates are sufficient for both static measurements and dynamic mechanical tests such as fatigue cycling and impact response. Engineers should choose filter and rate settings that match the frequency content of the measurement. For dynamic tests, anti alias behavior and phase consistency between channels should be verified during commissioning.
Wiring and Signal Integrity
Bridge signals are low level, so cable quality and shielding affect measurement quality. Twisted pair construction, consistent lead lengths, and separation from power conductors help maintain signal integrity. Where sensors are located far from the chassis, the effect of lead resistance and noise pickup should be evaluated and documented.
The module connector arrangement should be matched to the selected cable and accessory. Strain relief and secure connector fastening reduce intermittent connections on moving machinery. Engineers should also consider thermal effects on the gauge and wiring when measurements are made over long periods.
Software and System Integration
The NI-9237 is supported by NI-DAQmx, which provides bridge configuration, excitation settings, scaling, and calibration support. Applications can be developed in LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, Measurement Studio, and other NI-DAQmx compatible environments. The module can use TEDS with compatible sensors to identify sensor type and calibration information automatically.
In a CompactDAQ system, the module is used for portable and bench top mechanical measurement. In a CompactRIO system, it can participate in embedded control loops that respond to load or strain conditions. Synchronization with other C Series modules allows strain data to be correlated with acceleration, displacement, temperature, and digital status signals in the same chassis.
Typical Applications
