Product Overview
The National Instruments PXIe-8360 is a PXI Express interface card for MXI-Express systems. It is used to connect a host computer to a PXI Express chassis over a high speed cable link. In this configuration, the host controls the chassis and its installed modules as if they were part of the host system, while the measurement hardware remains in the chassis.
The PXIe-8360 is part of the NI MXI-Express family, which provides remote control and multi chassis expansion for PXI and PXI Express systems. Remote control is useful when the measurement hardware must be close to the device under test while the computer remains in a convenient or protected location.
Role in a MXI-Express System
MXI-Express systems typically use two components: a host interface card and a chassis interface card, connected by a cable. The PXIe-8360 is used on one side of this link, depending on the system configuration. Engineers should confirm the exact role and compatibility for the planned architecture against the product documentation.
Once the link is established, PXI Express modules in the chassis are detected by the host software and can be configured and programmed in the same way as modules in an embedded controller system. This transparent behavior simplifies application development and allows the same software to be used across different system architectures.
Bandwidth and System Expansion
The PXIe-8360 supports high bandwidth communication between the host and the chassis, which is important for high speed data acquisition, RF measurement, and multi channel test systems. Multiple chassis can be connected in supported configurations to expand the number of available slots and instruments.
Expansion must be planned so that bandwidth and latency requirements are met for each instrument. Engineers should review the module data rates, the cable link capabilities, and the host interface bandwidth together. Documenting the topology helps when the system is modified or replicated.
Installation and Cabling
The interface card installs in a compatible slot in the host computer or chassis, depending on its role. MXI-Express cables should be routed away from power conductors and secured to prevent strain on the connectors. Cable length limits should be respected, and connectors should be inspected for damage before mating.
Host BIOS and operating system settings may affect the detection of the interface card and the connected chassis. Engineers should verify that the host meets the requirements for the planned configuration and should install the appropriate driver software before connecting the chassis.
Software and Integration
The PXIe-8360 is supported by NI PXI Platform Services and standard NI instrument drivers. Once the chassis and modules are detected, instruments can be configured and programmed with LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, Measurement Studio, and other compatible development environments.
The interface preserves access to the timing and synchronization resources of the PXI Express chassis. Trigger lines and clocks remain available to installed modules, allowing coordinated operation between instruments. The host connection handles data transfer and control while the chassis manages module timing.
Typical Applications
Remote control of PXI Express chassis
Multi chassis test system expansion
High bandwidth data acquisition systems
Systems with host and measurement hardware separated
Laboratory research platforms
Rack mounted test equipment
The PXIe-8360 provides a PXI Express interface for MXI-Express remote control systems. Its bandwidth and integration make it suitable for expandable test and measurement architectures that require the host to be separated from the measurement chassis.
