In modern industrial control and data acquisition systems, the stability of serial communication between the host processor and the underlying field devices directly determines the reliability of the entire control network. Faced with complex industrial site environments, long-distance transmission brings about ground loop currents, electromagnetic interference (EMI), and timing conflicts in multi master station communication, which are often the most difficult problems faced by engineers in debugging and operation.
The MAE99-04 Termination Panel is an industrial grade bridge equipment designed to address this pain point. As an optoelectronic isolation interface, it can perfectly connect the 16 channel RS232 serial interface PMC module (PMC-Sweet16) of SBS GreenSpring with 8 RS485/RS422 serial communication ports on site. For on-site engineers in the "search solution" stage, in-depth analysis of the underlying hardware architecture, TXEN (transmit enable) control timing, and wiring specifications of MAE99-04 is crucial for quickly locating communication faults and ensuring long-term stable system operation.
Core hardware architecture and optoelectronic isolation design
MAE99-04 highly emphasizes anti-interference capability and space utilization in hardware design, and is a typical industrial grade reinforcement design.
1.1 Mechanical Structure and Protection
The device is packaged on a compact PCB (size 262mm x 72mm) and installed in a Phoenix 72mm wide DIN rail base. In order to adapt to harsh environments, the vast majority of components (such as logic chips and resistors) are surface mount (SMD) arranged on the track side (i.e. the bottom of the PCB), with physical protection provided by the base. The top layer is mainly the ground plane, which plays a role in shielding external electromagnetic interference. The LEDs on the panel are installed in reverse and emit light through the openings on the PCB; The DC-DC converter used for power supply is arranged on the component surface.
1.2 Port compatibility and isolation protection
This panel provides 8 bidirectional communication ports and is compatible with RS485/422 standards. There is an extremely important engineering boundary here: the sending port always maintains RS485 balanced level; Although the receiving port has added additional protection circuits to make it compatible with RS232 levels (suitable for connections less than 10 meters), the official strongly recommends avoiding this usage as much as possible. In long-distance or complex electromagnetic environments, the balanced transmission mechanism of RS485 has overwhelming advantages in suppressing external noise.
In addition, complete optoelectronic isolation is achieved between each port and between the port and the processor 0V. Engineering red line: On the RS485 link, devices must be connected to 0V (reference ground), otherwise common mode voltage may breakdown the transceiver chip.
Analysis of Transmission and Reception Timing and TXEN Automatic Control Logic
This is the most critical and prone mechanism for MAE99-04 to cause malfunctions. Due to RS485 being a half duplex communication, it is necessary to strictly control the switching between sending and receiving.
2.1 Hardware handshake between RTS and CTS
RS232 level communication is used between the panel and PMC module, with each channel containing RXD, TXD, RTS, CTS, and 0V. It is worth noting that the RTS (request to send) signal is directly short circuited to the CTS (clear to send) inside the terminal board. When the software is ready to send a message, it will set the RTS signal.
2.2 200ms monostable triggering and TXEN
When RTS is activated, it triggers the onboard Mono pulse generator, generating a 200 millisecond pulse that is used to enable the RS485 tri state driver (i.e. TXEN, transmit enable). The window period of 200ms is much longer than the maximum message sending time expected by the system.
Key engineering considerations: If the software needs to send consecutive next messages, the RTS must be cleared first and then reset to trigger the TXEN monostable again.
2.3 Multi Master Conflict Avoidance
In a Duplex or Triplex system, only hosts that are in an "online" state have the authority to activate RTS and send data. The system has an intelligent anti-collision mechanism: as soon as any data is received on the bus, the triggered TXEN monostable will be immediately cleared. This design not only avoids short circuits caused by multiple master stations sending simultaneously, but also enables the system to achieve faster data rotation when interacting with peripheral devices.

Power supply and on-site wiring specifications
3.1 Power Supply System
MAE99-04 accepts 24V on-site power input (operating range 18Vdc to 36Vdc). At 24V, the typical current is 120mA, with a maximum of 200mA. The main DC-DC converter provides onboard logic and RS232 interface power for+5V and -5V. More intricately, each port is equipped with an independent DC-DC isolated converter, which is converted from the main ± 5V and provides independent isolated power supply for each port, completely cutting off the ground loop.
