Basler BE1-FLEX Protection System: A Complete Guide to Professional Installation, Configuration, and Troubleshooting

Introduction: The Value and Application of the New Generation Configurable Protection System

In the field of power system protection and control, the flexibility, reliability, and scalability of equipment are crucial. The BE1-FLEX protection, automation, and control system launched by Basler Electric is a single hardware platform solution designed to address this challenge. It can adapt to almost all power system application scenarios, from feeders, transformers, generators to motors and busbars, through highly configurable hardware slots and powerful software based features.

For on-site engineers and technicians, fully understanding the hardware architecture, software logic, and debugging process of BE1-FLEX is the key to ensuring the safe and stable operation of the system. This article aims to provide a professional and detailed practical guide to help you complete the deployment, configuration, and basic troubleshooting of BE1-FLEX from scratch.

Initial preparation and safety regulations

Strictly following safety regulations and conducting preliminary inspections are essential steps before starting the installation.

Open box inspection: Upon receipt of the equipment, please immediately compare the purchase order and packing list to verify the Style Number on the front panel and inside the chassis.

Storage requirements: If not installed temporarily, the equipment should be stored in the original cardboard box and placed in a dust-free and dry environment.

Important reminder: Do not connect the USB cable between the PC and BE1-FLEX before the installation of BESTCOMSPlus software is completed, otherwise it may cause driver installation errors.

Safety Warning: Only qualified professionals are authorized to install, operate, and maintain. When the device is powered on or running, the rear terminals may have high voltage, so be sure to pay attention to safety.

Hardware installation and mechanical configuration

BE1-FLEX adopts a non withdrawable S1 size chassis (K-type), which can be adapted to standard S1 openings. The key to its hardware configuration lies in understanding the layout and functionality of the slots.

Chassis size and installation: The specific dimensions of the front panel and sides of the chassis are detailed in the "Installation" chapter of the manual. The installation bolts are made of carbon steel # 10-32, and the recommended torque for tightening the nuts is 20 to 25 inch pounds (2.26 to 2.82 N · m).

Slot allocation: The backplane slots are numbered starting from the power module. As shown in the following figure (Figure 1):

Slot 1: Dedicated power supply board slot.

Slot 2: Dedicated communication board slot.

Slot 4, 5, 6, 7: Analog Sampling Sample (CT/VT) slots.

Slot 3, 5, 6, 7: I/O and auxiliary board slots (shared with the analog board section).

Figure 1. Schematic diagram of the rear slot position of BE1-FLEX

Wiring specifications:

Simulation board: adopts screw crimping type terminals, supports circular terminal blocks, and can accommodate up to two 10 AWG wires. The recommended torque is 8 to 11 inch pounds (0.90 to 1.24 N · m).

Non analog board (power/I/O): using spring or screw compression type pluggable connectors. The wire diameter is either single 12 AWG or double 16 AWG (with double conduit). The standard stripping length is 10 millimeters.

Relay coil suppression: When the output contact is used to drive the relay coil, it is strongly recommended to parallel a reverse biased freewheeling diode at both ends of the relay coil to suppress electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Core software: BESTCOMSPlus and system configuration

BESTCOMSPlus is the brain of BE1-FLEX, and all settings and logic programming are completed through this software.

Software installation and connection: The software runs on Windows 7 SP1 and above versions. The installation program will automatically install NET framework and USB driver program. At first startup, a connection can be established through the front USB-C port.

Parameter configuration process: Configuring a new device usually follows the following logical path:

Download from device: When connecting for the first time, download the current settings and logic from the device (default is empty).

Hardware Mapping: Under the "Configuration" menu, map physical hardware (such as CT channel in slot 7) to logical instances (such as IA, IB, IC in Circuit 1).

System parameter setting: In the "Circuit", set key parameters such as CT/PT ratio, system frequency, rated voltage and current.

Function activation: In the "Protection" menu, add and enable specific protection functions (such as 50/51 overcurrent, 87 differential, etc.) according to application requirements.

Logic programming: In BEST logicPlus programmable logic, protection components, input/output, and logic gates are connected through drag and drop to achieve a complete protection and control scheme.

Save and Upload: Upload the configured settings file and logic to the device.
