AB Bulletin 1203 Serial Communications Module

Product Overview: Manuals are designed to guide users through installation, configuration, and troubleshooting for service professionals who are familiar with communications terminology and equipment. Modules are used to establish a digital connection between SCANport-enabled devices and serial communications devices. They support the RS232, RS422, and RS485 hardware standards and the DF1 protocol, and are compatible with a wide range of Allen - Bradley devices such as the 1336 PLUS, 1336 FORCE, and others.


Product Details: Available in open and enclosed configurations. The open type is mounted inside a specific drive and powered by the drive; the closed type is stand-alone and can be connected to an external 24V DC or 115V AC power supply. The module contains three DIP switches, SW1, SW2 and SW3, which are used to set parameters such as communication mode, address, baud rate, parity and so on, with factory default settings.


Installation guide: Before installation, the switches should be set according to the communication requirements of the equipment and the manual, and operated with blunt tools to prevent damage. When installing, the open module can be installed according to the drive type, and the closed type can be installed by panel or DIN rail. In terms of wiring, SCANport cable connection has a length limitation, and different devices are connected in different ways, such as 1336 PLUS and 1336 FORCE in some cases do not need to be connected separately; power supply connection, open type is powered by the drive, and the closed type is connected to an external power supply.


Configuration and operation: The SCANport data link is used for the transfer of information between devices and is activated by setting the module SW3 switches and device parameters. The communication module maintains data tables and supports a wide range of PCCC commands. Different PLCs (e.g. PLC-5, PLC-2, SLC-500) have different data table structures, and the manual gives an example of the configuration of DF1 messaging.


Environmental Specifications

Operating Temperature: Open, Enclosed (115/230V AC) and Enclosed (24V DC) modules all have an operating temperature range of 0 - 50°C (32 - 122°F), which is suitable for most conventional industrial environments and general indoor use scenarios, ensuring that the module's internal electronic components operate stably during normal operation, and avoiding high or low temperatures that could affect its performance and reliability. Relative Humidity: The relative humidity range is 0 - 95% and is required to be non-condensing. In this humidity range, the module can work normally, to avoid high humidity caused by internal circuit short-circuit, corrosion and other problems, to ensure the safety of the module in the use of humid environments.


Electrical Specifications

Input Voltage: Open type modules are powered by the driver; Closed type (115/230V AC) modules have an input voltage of 85 - 264V AC, 1 phase; Closed type (24V DC) modules have an input voltage of 24V DC, ±10% fluctuation is allowed. Different power supply modes and voltage ranges enable the modules to be adapted to a variety of power supply environments to meet the power supply needs of different users.


Input Frequency: The input frequency of enclosed (115/230V AC) module is 45 - 63Hz, open and enclosed (24V DC) modules do not mention this item, which indicates that the enclosed (115/230V AC) module has certain requirements on the frequency of the AC power supply, and you need to make sure that the frequency of the power supply you access complies with the range to ensure the normal operation of the module.


Input current: The maximum input current of closed type (115/230V AC) module is 35mA; the maximum input current of closed type (24V DC) module is 0.4A; open type module does not mention the specific input current value. Understanding the input current parameter will help users to choose the right power supply equipment and avoid the normal operation of the module being affected by insufficient or excessive power supply output current.


SCANport Load: The SCANport load of all three configurations is 60mA DC, which reflects the load characteristics of the module when connecting to SCANport devices to ensure that the mismatch of loads will not lead to communication failures or damage to devices when connecting to related devices.


Communication Specifications

Checksum: Support BCC or CRC checksum, checksum is used to detect errors during data transmission to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the data, the support of two types of checksum provides more protection for the reliability of data transmission.

Dimensional specifications: Open modules are unspecified and are labelled Open (IP00); Enclosed (115/230V AC) and Enclosed (24V DC) modules have the same dimensions, 45w x 76h x 123d mm (1.8 x 3.0 x 4.8 in.), and are classified as NEMA Type 1 (IP30). Knowing the dimensions will help you plan your installation space and ensure that the module will fit in its intended location.
