The Allen-Bradley 440E-L22BNSM is a rope pull emergency stop switch from the Guardmaster Lifeline4 series. It is designed to provide a convenient emergency stop along conveyors, packaging lines, and large machinery where operators need to initiate a safety stop from multiple positions. The switch features a stainless steel housing (NEMA 4/4X/13, IP66/67) and is operated by pulling a steel cable attached to the switch's drum. The 440E-L22BNSM model includes 2 NC safety contacts and 1 NO auxiliary contact, with a yellow indicator button for status visibility.

The rope pull switch is mounted at one end of a conveyor or machine, with a steel wire rope stretched along the length. When an operator pulls the rope, the drum rotates and triggers a snap‑action mechanism that opens the two NC safety contacts, immediately stopping the machinery. The switch also latches mechanically, requiring a manual reset (rotation of the yellow button) after the rope is tensioned back into position. The auxiliary NO contact can be used to signal a PLC or alarm that the switch has been activated.
The 440E-L22BNSM meets ISO 13850 (emergency stop) and EN 60947-5-5 (requirements for rope pull switches). It is rated for use in safety circuits up to Category 4 / PL e (ISO 13849-1) and SIL 3 (IEC 61508) when monitored by a suitable safety relay or safety PLC. The positive‑opening NC contacts (per EN 60947-5-1, Annex K) ensure that even if contacts weld, the safety contacts cannot be held closed.
The stainless steel housing (304) provides excellent corrosion resistance for washdown or outdoor applications. The shaft is sealed with dual lip seals to prevent ingress of dust and moisture. The rope drum is made of reinforced nylon with a galvanized steel insert. The switch includes an integrated rope tension indicator to assist installation.

Mount the switch securely to a rigid structure using the four M6 mounting holes. Install the wire rope using end fittings (cable clamps) at the switch and a tensioning spring at the opposite end. The rope should be tensioned to 50‑100 N to avoid nuisance tripping while still allowing easy actuation. For cable runs longer than 30 meters, use intermediate rope guides (pulleys) every 10 meters. The switch is designed to be actuated by a rope displacement of 30‑50 mm.
The switch has a terminal block with 5 screw terminals (common, NC1, NC2, NO, ground). Wire size: 0.5‑2.5 mm² (24‑12 AWG). The NC contacts are forced‑guided and should be connected in series with the emergency stop circuit. For Category 4 / PL e applications, dual‑channel monitoring is required, with both NC contacts wired separately to a safety relay. The shield of the cable should be connected to ground at the panel side only.
The yellow indicator button is illuminated (optional) or simply a colored reset knob. An optional LED module can be added to show status remotely. Accessories include: rope end eyes, tension springs, pulley brackets, and mounting hardware. Replacement rope (6 mm diameter) is available under part number 440E-R16.
This switch is used on conveyor systems (belt or roller), assembly lines, packaging machinery, printing presses, and long material handling systems. Its stainless steel construction makes it suitable for food processing, chemical plants, and outdoor bulk handling equipment.
Perform a functional test every month: pull the rope, verify that the machine stops and the switch latches. Reset the switch and confirm that the machine can be restarted. Annually, check rope tension, corrosion, and contact continuity. The switch has a mechanical life of 100,000 operations.
The Allen-Bradley 440E-L22BNSM Lifeline4 rope pull switch offers a rugged, corrosion‑resistant emergency stop solution for long machinery, combining high safety integrity with easy installation and operation.
