Description

B&R X20DC2395 Digital Output Module

The B&R X20DC2395 is a high-density digital output module in the X20 I/O system, offering 32 sink outputs (transistor switching to ground). Each output operates at 24 VDC with a maximum load current of 0.5 A per channel. With a width of only 12.5 mm, this module provides an exceptional channel density for space-critical control cabinets. It is designed for controlling actuators such as solenoid valves, contactors, indicator lights, and small relays.

Technical Specifications

The X20DC2395 features 32 digital outputs, organized in 4 groups of 8 outputs. Each group has a common supply pin. Output type: sink (NPN) – the transistor switches the load between the load and ground. Rated output voltage: 24 VDC (nominal, 18-30V). Maximum continuous current per channel: 0.5 A. Total current per module (sum of all channels) is limited by the supply connection and cooling; typical maximum 8 A total (derated at higher temperatures). Output switching frequency: resistive load ≤ 500 Hz. Output delay: 150 µs typical (off to on), 300 µs (on to off).

Protection features: short-circuit protection and overload shutdown with auto-recovery (thermal cycling). Diagnostics: each channel has an LED for status indication (yellow). The module provides channel-level diagnostic messages (overload, short circuit, wire break detection in off-state). Isolation: 500 V between field and bus. Power consumption from X20 bus: 0.18 W typical. Current consumption from I/O supply (24V) depends on load.

Key Features

  • 32 digital outputs, sink type (NPN)

  • Output voltage 24 VDC, 0.5 A per channel

  • Compact 12.5 mm width (one slot)

  • Short-circuit and overload protection with auto-recovery

  • Channel-level diagnostic LEDs

  • Removable terminal block (TB712 series)

  • Hot-swappable (X2X Link support)

  • Operating temperature range -25°C to +60°C (horizontal mount)

  • CE, UL, cUL, DNV, ATEX Zone 2 certified

Module Architecture

The X20DC2395 uses a high-density design with 32 outputs arranged in two rows of 16 channels. The module connects to the X20 system via the backplane (X2X Link) and receives its field supply from an external 24V source (connected via the terminal block). Each output channel is protected by an active current limiting circuit that responds to overload and short-circuit conditions. Upon fault, the channel is shut down and attempts to restart after a cooling period (thermal cycling). The LED for that channel indicates a fault by blinking. The module also supports wire break detection (off-state monitoring) when the output is off and a minimal current is present – this can diagnose a broken wire to the actuator.

Configuration and Diagnostics

In B&R Automation Studio, the X20DC2395 is configured as a standard digital output module. The user can enable or disable the off-state diagnostics per channel. Output data is mapped as a 32-bit bit array. The module provides status information including channel fault bits and module temperature. The diagnostic LEDs on the front panel indicate: green for bus operation, red for module error, and yellow per channel for output status (solid on = output active, blinking = overload/short circuit).

Wiring and Terminal Blocks

The module uses the X20TB12 terminal block (screw type) or X20TB12F (spring type). The terminal block has 48 pins (24 positions, 2 rows). Wiring: 1 row for outputs 0-15, the other row for outputs 16-31. Supply for outputs is distributed via the terminal block; use two pins for 24V and two pins for GND to reduce voltage drop. Recommended wire size: 0.2 to 1.5 mm² (AWG 24-16). The terminal block is removable for easy replacement without rewiring.

Applications

The X20DC2395 is ideal for applications with many digital output points in a small footprint, such as control cabinets of packaging machines, textile machinery, printing presses, and assembly lines. It can directly drive small pneumatic valves (solenoids) with current less than 0.5A, LED indicators, and solid-state relays. For larger loads (e.g., contactor coils >0.5A), an interposing relay must be used.

Environmental and Certifications

Operating temperature: horizontal mounting -25°C to +60°C; vertical mounting -25°C to +50°C. Storage: -40°C to +85°C. Humidity: 5-95% non-condensing. Vibration: 5g (10-55 Hz). Protection rating: IP20. Certifications: CE, UKCA, UL 61010-2-201, cUL, DNV (marine), ATEX Zone 2 (II 3G Ex nA IIC T5 Gc).

Conclusion

The B&R X20DC2395 digital output module offers a high channel count in an ultra-compact form factor, reducing panel space and wiring complexity. With robust protection features, diagnostic capabilities, and seamless integration into the X20 system, it is an excellent choice for machine builders needing many digital outputs without sacrificing reliability.
