Beckhoff CX2030-0115 Embedded PC Controller

The Beckhoff CX2030-0115 is a high-performance embedded PC controller from the CX2000 series. Powered by an Intel Core i7 processor (dual-core, 1.6 GHz), this device is designed for advanced automation tasks requiring substantial computing power, such as multi-axis motion control, vision processing, and complex HMI visualization. The controller is pre-installed with TwinCAT 3 automation software, supporting PLC, NC, and CNC functionalities. The Intel Core i7-2610UE processor is a 32 nm Sandy Bridge architecture CPU with a Thermal Design Power of 17 W, balancing performance and energy efficiency. The dual-core design with Hyper-Threading provides up to 4 logical cores. TwinCAT 3 can distribute tasks across multiple cores, allowing separate cores for PLC, motion, and communication tasks. The 4 GB RAM (expandable) is sufficient for large PLC programs and extensive data logging. The CFast storage is removable for easy replacement or upgrade; the controller supports S.M.A.R.T. monitoring.

Communication and Fieldbus

The CX2030-0115 includes two Gigabit Ethernet ports. Port 1 is typically used as an EtherCAT master (supports up to 65535 devices, distributed clocks, and hot-connect). Port 2 can be used for standard TCP/IP communication (e.g., HMI, MES, OPC UA). A third Ethernet port (10/100 Mbit) is dedicated for service and diagnostics. In addition, the controller features four technology slots on the side. These slots accept Beckhoff system modules such as CX2100-xxxx for power supply or fieldbus modules like PROFIBUS (CX2500-0xxx), CANopen (CX2020-0xxx), or serial interfaces (CX2030-0xxx). This modularity allows customization without changing the base unit.

Operating System and TwinCAT 3

The controller can run Windows Embedded Standard 7 or Windows 10 IoT Enterprise (preinstalled on request). The Windows environment allows the installation of HMI/SCADA software (e.g., TwinCAT HMI, Visual Studio) and third-party applications. TwinCAT 3 is the automation software that runs as a real-time extension on Windows. It supports IEC 61131-3 languages (LD, FBD, ST, SFC, CFC) as well as object-oriented extensions and C++/MATLAB integration. TwinCAT 3 provides PLC, motion control (including CNC), and measurement (scope) functionalities. The controller can also run TwinCAT HMI for web-based visualization.

Installation and Maintenance

The CX2030-0115 mounts on a 35 mm DIN rail. It requires a 24 V DC power supply (minimum 40 W). Connect the power supply to the CX2100-xxxx power module (sold separately) which attaches to the left side of the CX2030. The power module provides input filtering and an integrated UPS option. For storage, the CFast card is accessible from the front panel. To replace it, power off the controller, eject the CFast card, and insert a new one preloaded with the operating system and TwinCAT. The controller’s fanless design reduces maintenance requirements, but ensure adequate clearance for heat dissipation (at least 50 mm above and below).

Environmental and Compliance

The CX2030-0115 is CE, UL, and RoHS certified. Operating temperature (with CFast): 0°C to 50°C; with additional forced air cooling, up to 60°C. Storage temperature: -40°C to 85°C. Humidity: 5-95% non-condensing. Vibration resistance: 2g (10-55 Hz). The unit is IP20 rated and must be installed in a control cabinet.
