Omron CS1D-DPL01 Duplex System Unit

The Omron CS1D-DPL01 is a duplex (redundancy) unit for the CS1D series PLC system. It is a key component for building a hot-standby redundant controller configuration, providing high availability for critical industrial processes. The CS1D-DPL01 is installed in a dedicated rack alongside two CS1D CPU units (e.g., CS1D-CPU67H or CS1D-CPU65H). It monitors the status of the active and standby CPUs and automatically switches control to the standby unit in the event of a failure.

Technical Specifications

The CS1D-DPL01 operates on the CS1D backplane (5 V DC, current consumption 0.4 A). It is designed to be installed in a CS1D duplex rack (e.g., CS1D-BC052) which provides dedicated slots for two CPU units and the DPL01. The unit includes optical fiber connectors (duplex) for synchronization between two racks in a redundant configuration (when using two racks for improved fault tolerance). The DPL01 monitors the CPU status, I/O bus, and power supplies. It supports hot swap of the standby CPU and I/O modules without interrupting control. The unit includes LEDs indicating active CPU, standby CPU, and fault status. Operating temperature: 0°C to 55°C. Dimensions: 90 mm H × 35 mm W × 85 mm D. Weight approx. 0.2 kg.

Key Features

  • Enables hot-standby redundant CPU configuration for CS1D series

  • Monitors active and standby CPU health

  • Automatic failover (less than 1 scan cycle switchover time)

  • Supports optical fiber link for duplex CPU racks separated up to 30 meters

  • Hot-swappable: replace standby CPU or I/O without stopping process

  • LED indicators: ACT (active), STB (standby), ERR (error), LINK (fiber communication)

  • Compatible with CS1D-CPU67H, CS1D-CPU65H, CS1D-CPU44H, etc.

  • Requires CS1D duplex rack and power supplies

Redundancy Operation

In a CS1D redundant system, two CPU units are installed in the same or separate racks. The DPL01 unit manages the synchronization between them. The active CPU executes the user program and controls I/O; the standby CPU continuously synchronizes its memory (program, data, and I/O status) with the active CPU via the DPL01. If the active CPU fails or is removed, the standby CPU automatically takes over within one scan cycle (typically < 10 ms). The DPL01 also monitors the power supply and I/O bus; if a fatal error occurs, the switchover is initiated. The system can be configured for single rack (both CPUs in one rack) or dual rack (CPUs in separate racks for higher availability against rack damage). Optical fiber cables between DPL01 units are used in dual rack configurations.

System Configuration Requirements

To build a redundant CS1D system, the following components are needed:

  • CS1D-DPL01 Duplex Unit (1 per system)

  • Two CS1D CPU units (same model, e.g., CS1D-CPU67H)

  • CS1D duplex backplane (e.g., CS1D-BC052, CS1D-BC082) with 5 slots

  • Two power supply units (CS1D-PA207R or similar)

  • I/O modules must be compatible with redundancy (CS1D I/O or CS1W with duplex support)

  • For dual rack: two backplanes, two sets of power supplies, and optical fiber cables

Programming and Operation

The user program is written once and downloaded to both CPUs simultaneously via CX-Programmer. The DPL01 does not require separate programming; it is configured via DIP switches on the unit (setting node numbers, baud rate for fiber link). During normal operation, the active CPU updates outputs, while the standby CPU updates its internal memory but does not drive outputs. When a failover occurs, the standby CPU immediately assumes output control. The status of the redundant system can be monitored using the CS1D status words in the PLC memory (e.g., A300 to A315).

Applications

CS1D-DPL01 is used in high-availability applications such as:

  • Critical infrastructure (water treatment, power generation)

  • Chemical and pharmaceutical batch processing

  • Continuous production lines (steel, paper, glass)

  • Airport baggage handling systems

  • Oil and gas pipeline control

Installation

Mount the CS1D duplex rack in a control cabinet. Install the DPL01 in the dedicated slot (usually the leftmost slot after the power supply). Install the two CPU units in the slots marked CPU0 and CPU1. Connect the power supplies. For dual rack configuration, connect the fiber optic cables between the DPL01 units on each rack (TX to RX). Set the DIP switches for each DPL01 (rack number, baud rate). Power on the system; the DPL01 will automatically detect the CPUs and establish redundancy. The active CPU will be indicated by the ACT LED on the DPL01.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting

If the ERR LED on the DPL01 illuminates, check the fiber connections (if dual rack) and the status of both CPUs. The DPL01 does not have field-replaceable components; replace the entire unit if faulty. The standby CPU can be swapped while the system is running; the DPL01 will resynchronize the new CPU automatically. Regular preventive maintenance includes checking battery status on both CPUs and cleaning fiber optic connectors.

Environmental and Compliance

The CS1D-DPL01 is CE, UL, and RoHS certified. Operating temperature: 0-55°C. Humidity: 10-90% non-condensing. Protection rating IP20.

Conclusion

The Omron CS1D-DPL01 duplex unit is essential for building a fault-tolerant PLC system. It enables automatic failover between two CPUs, ensuring continuous operation in critical industrial processes.
