The Eaton D820MPM (Multi‑Purpose Module) is a flexible I/O component of the D820 distributed automation system. It is engineered to interface directly with sensors and actuators in industrial environments while providing advanced functions such as high‑speed counting, pulse measurement, and position capture. By handling these tasks locally, the D820MPM reduces the processing load on the central controller and enables faster response times.
8 digital inputs (24 VDC, sink/source, configurable for interrupts)
8 digital outputs (24 VDC, 0.5 A, short‑circuit protected)
2 high‑speed counters (up to 200 kHz) with encoder interface (AB, pulse/direction)
2 position capture inputs (touch probe) for precise event timing
On‑board temperature sensor for diagnostic monitoring
LED status indicators per channel
Input voltage range: 18–30 VDC (rated 24 VDC)
Input current: typ. 4 mA per channel
Output type: MOSFET, high‑side switching
Output protection: Overload, short‑circuit, thermal shutdown
Update rate: Configurable from 1 ms to 100 ms
Communication: Integrated backplane (D820 bus) or optional fieldbus coupler (EtherCAT, PROFINET, Modbus TCP)
Power supply: 24 VDC from bus or external terminal
Dimensions: 120 x 70 x 55 mm (DIN rail mount)
Operating temperature: -20 °C to +60 °C

The two high‑speed counters can operate in various modes: quadrature encoder, up/down counter, frequency measurement, or period measurement. They are ideal for monitoring motor speed, position feedback from linear scales, or counting fast pulses from flow meters. The position capture inputs allow latching of the counter value on an external trigger event with sub‑microsecond precision, useful for registration mark detection in packaging machinery.
The D820MPM is designed to work seamlessly with the D820 series programmable automation controllers (PACs) and remote bus couplers. Configuration is performed through Eaton’s CODESYS‑based programming environment, where I/O mapping, scaling, and interrupt handling are defined. The module supports hot‑swap in many backplane configurations, minimizing downtime during maintenance.

Housed in a rugged plastic enclosure with IP20 protection, the D820MPM withstands industrial environments. It meets CE, UL, and cULus requirements and is resistant to vibration (5 g) and shock (30 g). All I/O circuits are optically isolated from the backplane to prevent ground loops and improve noise immunity.
By combining versatile I/O with specialized counting and capture functions, the Eaton D820MPM reduces system complexity and cost, making it a smart choice for modern distributed control architectures.
